Duke Nukem and sexism

As alot of you are aware, the "babe slapping" mode in Duke Nukem's multi player has been critisized about by a fair amount of people (not forgetting FOX). After thinking for a while, yes, it is sexist and yes, it is meant to be a total joke (its duke nukem ffs).

If you are even considering to buy a game like Duke Nukem, you should be able to accept the nature of the material.

Sexist: sexism (ˈsɛksɪzəm)

? n
discrimination on the basis of sex, esp the oppression of women by men

This bring me to my point: If these types of sexist games are created for males to play, why the hell are the people that dont want to play the game complaining?

Take this for example, smoking is bad for health, not only for those that smoke, but to those that don't smoke too as they get second hand smoke. Therefore it is valid that those that do not smoke complain and go against smoking. Whereas sexist games that are created which targets males (who are meant to be of mature age) are being criticized by those who do not play them. Yes, it is offensive material to some but, is being advertised as such to warn them. If people are afraid of their kids getting affected, them Im sorry but, look at the day and age we live in.

Discuss.

I agree. Personally, i find it hilarious!

Seriously, getting offended by it is just stupid and just proves that you need to grow thicker skin. Duke Nukem is a parody. A tasteless parody? Perhaps. But must everything be filled with taste and story nowadays? Can´t we just enjoy a game that doesn´t even pretend to portray the opposite sex in a tasteful fashion?

Is that too much to ask?

Yeah, it's pointless. And every kind of correctness gone mad.

Why haven't they banned every James Bond movie yet...

If someone buys a game called DUKE NUKEM, and thought it would contain a very serious social critique on the treatment of women, then they're very fucking stupid to the point of making eugenics a good idea wrong.

It's not hilarious. It would be hilarious if they were innocent bloggers, or whatever. But these people are actually going out and doing shit about this. They CAN make a difference, and if they succeed, then the gamers lose out on some kick ass features in games like DNF.

The problem is, they hate the gaming industry and everything related to it. And even though ESRB is one of the best rating systems in the world, and retailers (at least in North America) are not allowed to sell M-Rated games to kids, these people don't care. They just automatically assume that kids will get their hands on it. And some of them will, just like some kids can get their hands on porn, or extremely violent R-Rated movies, or extremely profane music. Big freakin' deal, that's life.

The adult games, at this point, have lived long enough to have their own discretion about sexism. I am not sexist, but frankly, sometimes it's nice to enjoy something like Capture The Babe. I'm hoping, these idiots won't affect the developers, and make them actually censor their own games.

I would be disappointed if a Duke Nukem game didn't contain sexism.
I find it funny that people are getting offended by fiction.

I don't think it's funny or offensive. I just think that it (as well as the game and the character Duke Nukem) is stupid.

Because it almost confirms the "all gamers are stupid immature teenage virgins" stereotype that gamers are trying to get rid off?

It doesn't really matter that its a parody, its still stupid and juvenile and not in the good funny way.
Well, that's the problem with parodies, they have be very similar to what they are parodying, and an awful lot of people (including people that make parodies) often can't tell the difference. Look at Dave Chappelle, he was trying to parody racism, but gained a massive cult following among racists who didn't get the joke.

Additionally...how does anyone know it's a parody or not until they've actually played it?

What a lot of people fail to realise is the Duke Nukem is and always has been a work of satire.
Look at Duke himself, huge muscles, blonde buzzcut weilding huge guns and disrespecting women, this is the picture perfect 70s-80s American action hero that shows that he is in fact a blown up stereotype. As are all of the people that surround him, the women are generically attractive bimbos and his friends are all macho badasses just like he is.

Duke Nukem games are satyrical, they feature sexist content because that's what this american badass stereotype does, and he is frankly hilarious.

If any of you have seen Borat or Bruno then you will see what I mean when I say on the surface these games may seem offensive, but end up being hilarious and very intelligent in that they show us how ridiculous and funny our stereotypes are.

People that complain about Bruno or Borat or Duke Nukem usually haven't seen or played the content, and instead have been handed a list of all of the potentially offensive things that happen in them, and have based their opinions on the content based on these things. Frankly, if i was to read a list of things that occur in Duke Nukem when put in an out of context situation like that, I would probably deem it offensive! But we need to realise the underlying message beneath the macho surface of Duke Nukem.

What these people need to hear is try the content in context, see how ridiculous and fun Duke Nukem is, what will hold us back is telling them that they are wrong and trying to justify what happens in these games.

I would possibly be against it if it was a serious game, but it isn't. It is so ridiculous and hysterical taking it serious is assanine.

I think it reflects worse on them than anyone in the gaming community. And I really hope Wal-Mart doesn't cave on this, though they've made such decisions before.

I nearly agreed with you up until this bit. This is a terrible blanket statement to make. What about if there was a game where you played a white supremacist and just lynched black guys? Would that statement of - it's not aimed at black guys so why are they complaining? - still apply? Probably not.

This seems to be the popular reply that's circulating the other topics.

Time to mooch.

That's a terrible false equivalency that Penny arcade have made before. Simply put, misogyny is something that everyone can be influenced to partake in. Killing people on the battlefield isn't.

If anyone's aware of the dickwolf thing, these dudes displayed rather conclusively that they didn't care to understand feminism when they offended rape victims and didn't feel the need to act diplomatically (to summarise a long argument).

THAT SAID. It's incredibly fucking hypocritical for FOX news to come out against discrimination of any sort and I haven't played the game. I get that Duke Nukem is a joke but I don't think that sexism that can be seen as unironic like I've heard this game mode described isn't funny or good for anyone.
