Hmmm, the Escapist's coverage of Activision's stripper laden PR event for True Crime: Hong Kong would indicate that there's something not quite right with this story.

Either there's more to it than is being reported and this actress has personally offended Activision in some way, or Activision are being Grade A hypocrites and are only reluctant about using adult entertainment to sell their M rated games that they actually want to sell to children (or at least appeal to parents with the buying power).

Except that were it not for the uninvitation, no-one outside the Netherlands would even have known she was invited in the first place. I sometimes wonder if Activision actually has a PR department, or just an aquarium full of manatees.

That´s exactly what I thought. It´s a game release party in a small European country. I think the New York Times just might not be to investigative when it comes to the VIPs in attendance.

Furthermore, while I don´t want to stereotype an entire people, I have been to Amsterdam a couple of times.... I think the uproar over a porn-star showing up might not have been quite as big as Activision seems to believe.
They are a rather open-minded bunch over there.

It's not actually us Dutchies that are stoned, it's mostly the tourists. So even if there was a New York Times journalist there he'd probably be too stoned to notice.

But any reaction nationally would have been somewhere between "Cool, I guess that's open-minded of them..." and "Okay... and why would I care about that?".
Right now reaction is probably much the same as most of this thread, though possibly a bit more anti-American (not saying I'm anti-American, but you guys have a seriously bad reputation).

I don't think so, I heard every once in a while there are some porn stars playing WoW. Can't say I really followed those stories because really who cares other than 12 year olds desperately hoping to group with them at some point but I hadn't heard any of them getting banned over it.

On topic - Stay classy Activision. She was probably looking forward to that party and you made the mistake not her, should have let her come. Did you think she'd be giving lap dances all night and distracting everyone from your game? I think she can last just one night without blowing several people in front of some cameras...

I rather like her little quote at the end there. But, really, Activision, you're just showing how infantile you are. You make an M-rated game, there should be no problem with am "M-rated" actress being there.

But, then again, this is the same company that backs an MMO that's about to have kung-fu pandas, it's no wonder they don't want put any adult vibes out when their big money maker is a game for babies.

1. We don't trial soldiers for murder for killing another soldier in a war. So yeah, society's pretty positive killing in a war != murder, despite what a few protestor signs might otherwise indicate.
2. "Love-makers" are obliged by their industry to take very regular tests to check whether they have STDs as they're quite prone to them. If you ever saw an STD, or rather it's effects, the word "dirty" would not be the furthest from your mind, especially due to the fact that a lack of hygiene is another cause for it.
3. The adult film industry (particularly the actors) is not held in the highest regard considering it's basically filmed prostitution (sex for money). That might be a backwards view in the eyes of some, but it doesn't change the fact associating with it gets you a certain kind of PR, mostly viewed as negative. Considering the invites for a launch party are going out to specific people who would boost the company's PR, it's simply counterproductive to be getting that kind of PR.

So yeah. Sucks for her, but I sure as hell don't blame ActiVision, it's just a reasonable business move.
