Ah, ah, ah, Techland! Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. I remember getting WAAAAY hyped up for Dead Island way back when it was originally announced, and how they'd said a lot of shit that made it seem like it'd be a way better game than the one we got.

Sorry, but I'm not taking any chances this time, I'm waiting for some ACTUAL gameplay, not this scripted nonsense.

Argh, holy crap. I had no idea they made Dead Island as I never played it. Now these somewhat negative comments are starting to make sense. Like I said, I never played Dead Island, but I seem to recall some user reviews mentioning the term 'fetch quests' quite often. Now my opinion of this early pre-alpha footage has changed from excitedly hopeful to mildly skeptical.

Ok, so it's pre-alpha, and therefore that video will have been crafted just for a press release, scripting and all, but I love the ideas that they are playing with here. Focus on melee combat was good, though Dead Island showed that to start with and ended up... well...

Like the day/night changes, like the freedom of movement aspect, like having to make decisions that will have consequences for the gameplay, ie spend longer here, have to go further to get the supplies, run the risk of being caught out at night. Promising start, great concepts on show - will they deliver?

EDIT:

What is it with electified knives?! Why only knives? Thunder hammer, anyone? If we're are going to have arbitrary elemental damage types, does that mean we're going to get a flaming baseball bat or something? That's the only aspect that I'm concerned about - what I read and saw about Dead Island was disappointing, and I hope they don't go down the RPG route :/

There are a few things I got hyped for and burned. Hype is bad. A lot of the attacks and throws seemed very seamless. I guess that could come from playing the game all the time, but I'm more in the corner of prerendered footage. And if that's the case, I have no faith in this at all.

I thought they already had put in a Thunder Hammer. http://youtu.be/PDUKbXFrDFs?t=8m18s When he jumps down, those bodies scatter with the Hammer drop

I don't know... despite in game footage something about this trailer strikes me as really, really scripted and for show.
It's pre-alpha footage. All pre-alpha footage is scripted and for show. It's basically a proof of concept or prototype that you show to publishers.

Games like Aliens: Colonial Marines and The Last of Us did something similar.

Not impressed at this stage. That's a cool looking Demo, but hey "Aliens: Colonial Marines" had a cool demo too. Too much lying in the industry now to get particularly excited.

That said I'm an RPG nut, so I actually appreciated what "Dead Island" tried to do more, I just think they didn't go far enough with it. What's more the thing that kind of irked me was when it turned from the somewhat novel setting of an overrun resort island, into a pretty typical "Resident Evil" overrun third world country it kind of lost a lot of it's appeal. "Dying Light" which seems to be set in South America going by the backrounds and accent (though I could be wrong) seems like it's pretty much opting for being "Resident Evil 5" re-done for first person melee combat and trying to avoid the whole "African Controversy". I can't say I'm that impressed.

To be honest, I am hoping some people take the idea of what "Dead Island" was touted as being at some point and run with it. At first I thought the guys doing that were bloody geniuses because resort islands are a great, underused location for horror. Basically resort developers, cruise liner companies, etc... are big on buying small islands and then developing them (or just flat out having artificial islands constructed) into what amount to amusement parks. The idea being that on a long cruise it gives the boats places to stop and restock, while also being loaded with attractions, stores, casinos, etc... to get people on the boat to spend tons of money on entertainment when they disembark to stretch their legs. These resorts are by their nature pretty isolated, so if there was a zombie outbreak, or someone unleashing demons with a dark ritual (maybe some cult running the corperation starts using the cruise liners to effectively ferry in sacrificial victims once they are ready....) you'd literally be trapped especially if you have no idea how to sail a cruise liner or tender. In an environment like that you can do all your favorite tropes without having to worry about justifying a global pandemic or the reaction of authorities who in many cases can be very slow to react to problems on islands like that (the jurisdiction of dealing with private islands in international waters can be touchy), not to mention given the problem with third world pirates and such it's easy to explain why security might actually have some stockpiles of guns and even moderately heavy weapons secretly stashed in case of an attack by modern pirates come to rob the place when the navy of whatever country promises to police them can't respond immediately. You don't have to worry as much about "why would there be a rotary grenade launcher locked up in the armory other than to be fun for the player to shoot" since it's kind of easy to explain why black market weapons might be there. Of course the guys doing "Dead Island" totally blew the potential of the initial idea, and by the second act it was another generic romp through ugly gray and brown textured urban blight with some jungles thrown in.

At any rate, even with the whole "parkour" gimmick the game is going to have to do a lot to sell me on why their version of choosing whether to avoid or kill zombies while chasing macguffins through ruins is better than anyone else's. They can't even claim creativity from the setting as far as I can tell.

Whoa whoa whoa whooooa. These guys are responsible for Dead Island? I thought that was Deep Silver?
Well in that I'm just going to take my interest in this game and push it right off a cliff.

Now I'll just groan about yet another Zombie game being made.

Is there going to be a QTE for every single time you get grabbed by a zombie or are they going to try to deal with it a different way?

Not remotely impressed.

Just a more dressed up Dead Island with mirrors edge movement.

Getting closer though. Some day someone will make the actual 'survival' zombie rpg that everyone's really been waiting for.

At the moment Triple A developers still seem insistent on putting in too much emphasis on 'action' and 'Special Weapons Attacks' and other arcade-like nonsense. Emphasis should be on the actual challenges of surviving day-to day, the exploration it requires and the characters and moral dilemmas you come across.

Yeah, that's what I meant. Conceptually, I wonder if a developer would be able to make a fighting/survival game with no gun use by the player character. An FPS with no guns, melee-only if you will.

I can't imagine an 8-10 hour game where you don't get the use of firearms (see explanation: "The loud report of gunfire would only attract more zombies"). Then again, I wonder if that would get boring? Or would gun use be a cop out in this game if they build a complex, interactive environment?

I can only think of one other decent FPS type game with no guns, and that's Amnesia. Can anyone think of any more? Sure, there's stuff like Portal, but that's within a limited environment.
Mirror's Edge may as well not have had guns with how useless they are. I'd count it as a first-person game that doesn't use guns, same with Zeno Clash.

While it looked pretty sweet, I got a major flashback of the whole Aliens: Colonial Marines-debacle. It really didn't feel like gameplay at all (and probably wasn't). Still, the actual game might be good.

And a bit off-topic, but you know what I've wanted for quite some time? A game with zombies where you can't get bit and there are no special zombies. Instead of fighting you'd have to sneak around the infected and distract them with sounds.
ZombieU is that game. Well, not the sounds bit as far as I'm aware, but definitely everythin else. You die so quick in that game.

Well, there is Condemned. Instead of shooting peoples in this game you beat hobos and drug addicts...

Oh my God that sentence just continuously cracks me up. I'm sick, I know, but you bring up a good point. I bought the sequel on 360 but never finished :/

"...hobo fight simulator" Oh man, what is wrong with me?

Good point. I never actually got to play Mirror's Edge. I never got a feel for the controls in the demo so I ignored it. I might have to give it a second look.

I know it's a stretch, but I think this building in the background looks a bit like the Cape Town Stadium in South Africa. They're both a bit wobbly at the top.

Round, asymmetrical building.

Also wobbly.

Damn, I may buy Dead Island out of sheer curiosity, but I'm fairly positive I'm going to regret it.

Eh. Dead Island is not a terrible game. It's not amazing, but it's definitely on the upper side of average at least.

It's just not the game they advertised it as, especially if the only marketing you see for it is the first cinematic trailer. People went in expecting a relatively serious "Left 4 Dead with weapon crafting" type thing, and they got a first person brawler that set the dial on the decidedly silly end of the spectrum.

If you're able to not take it seriously, and put up with weapons that break about thrice as fast as they really should, you shouldn't regret buying it.

That's a distinct possibility, though from what I see on Google Maps, the angle of the mountains appears off- it would appear that either they did a little geographical relocation for the game, or this part of the gameplay takes place on Robben Island.

Good eye!

I don't know what the story line is but this is looking what dead island was supposed to be. If that's the case than the game should turn out to be awesome.

SOLD!!!

They basically made what I have been asking for ever since the first zombie shambled into their first game.

Open World Survival.

Though that little blunder in the house where he literally walked into a zombie nomming on his leg should have been game over. Immunity doesn't exist. Get careless and get bitten and you are dead.

I mean, it didn't even have real survivor conflict.
How original Survivor Conflict, it's not like people could actually get along and not be colossal fucking idiots all the time right? Heck what is a zombie game without survivors being dicks to each other and leading to their own downfalls? It's almost like those games are in the minority.
That already exists. Its called Project Zomboid.

OT: No, Techland. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

It will be dead island 2.5, and dead island wasn't that good.
]

It exists the same way Duke Nukem existed for 13 years.

Project Zomboid is FAAAAAAAAAAAAR from done and development is tremendously slow.
