E3: ZombiU Makes a Case for the Wii U Controller

The dead walk, and the Wii U controller is your best hope.

Nintendo desperately wants stronger third-party support for its home consoles, and it needs titles that can demonstrate the viability and functionality of its special touch-screen controller. Ubisoft's ZombiU, though sounding like a university for the undead, does both.

Set after a zombie apocalypse (natch), ZombiU becomes a tool in the player's arsenal. The screen becomes a radar indicator to locate nearby undead, and zooms in to become a sniper rifle scope when shooting from afar. It's also used for inventory management in what seems to be a classic "Inventory Tetris" a la Resident Evil.

Curiously, the use of the screen - and the inventory - seemed to be in real time. When the player switched to the inventory screen on the Wii U controller, the character on the TV pulled out his case, but the action continued. A zombie kept approaching, which necessitated a very quick change of weaponry to the shotgun and a switch back to the "action" screen to defend oneself.

The controller has plenty of context-sensitive scenarios, too. When attacked by a zombie, the Wii U gamepad becomes a first-person view of the zombie about to bite the player's face off until he or she manually shoves the zombie away by shaking the controller. When trying to figure out the combination to a locked door, the Wii U controller becomes the keypad in question.

ZombiU will reportedly be about the fight for survival, as one zombie bite means that your character is dead. But don't worry, though - you'll be able to jump into the body of another survivor to try and hunt your old, now-zombified self down and recover what little equipment you can save.

ZombiU will also take advantage of the Wii U controller's camera to "zombify" your face. I think the Reggie Zombie will give me nightmares for weeks.

I really could see this being a good use of the tech, but it's rather expensive tech for such novelties at this point, isn't it?

This is a lot of money to ask people to shell out for what still amounts to a "proof of concept."

The trailer looks great, but why the Wii U exclusivity? (sigh)

Well, I see this as the same as Dead Island. Very promising trailer that obviously doesnt live up to the actual game.

I don't know about all this "Dead Island" comparison. To me, Dead Island had a solid trailer that came at the same time as absolutely no information about the game itself except for the island resort and zombies. This seems like a much more open world while doing away with the cookie-cutter zombie apocalypse design.

I will have to see what else the Wii U has for third-party support, but I'm feeling optimistic about this console.

Looks cool but I won't make the same mistake I did with Dead Island, I'll need some gameplay footage before I decide whether I want this game or not.

I loved the gameplay trailer.
Everything seems to be really good. The use of the GamePad, the graphics, the setting. But the thing that makes me excited about this game is the 1 bite kill and that the game keeps going when you open the inventory. Everything is in real time.

I always got annoyed by the fact that when I open my inventory screen, the game paused until I want to continue. Well, no more. Now you need to prepare before joining the fun. No more changing of equipment "on fly". If you enter a room full of zombies and don't have the right equipment... well, good luck. :)

Captcha:
"how about that!".
Looks like it's talking to people who said the WiiU is doomed to fail before having any info. ^^

This actually... looks very promising or at the very least intriguing.

CAPTCHA: that hurts - Zombie bites do that?

The gimmicks look awesome and fun, but I'm not really interested in a gimmick game about zombies as much as I'm interested in a fun zombie game with some gimmicks. It looks promising, and I planned on buying the WiiU anyway. I'll be watching.

It actually looks really interesting, may end up getting this is there is enough other good games on the Wii U to bother buying it...

Love the idea its in London, a zombie game NOT in America?! Though it does then annoy me with the fact a random businessman has a gun... But it looks a bit into the apocalypse so maybe he nicked it from police or something...

Whatever, just wash your hands.
It looks damn impressive but its ubisoft and they have a long history of launch games that suck... still though....
