EA Claims To Have No Problem With Used Game Sales

If our customers want to trade in games, we'll probably allow it, EA says.

"Our general thesis is what the fans tell us they want, we'll give them," says EA's Patrick Söderlund, and that includes used game sales. EA doesn't have a problem with second hand sales as they exist right now, and Söderlund claims that "we clearly articulated our stance when we abandoned Online Pass [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/124061-Electronic-Arts-Kills-the-Online-Pass]." At the time the Pass was abandoned, EA said it had "listened to the feedback" and decided to get rid of it; perhaps a similar thing's happening here. The fans want to trade in their games, and have said so vociferously, therefore EA's going to let them.

Söderlund went on to say that EA would have to "look at what the first-parties are doing and follow any rules," suggesting that circumstances beyond its control might force it to impose conditions or charges. "We have to scramble after these conferences and come back to what we think is right," said Söderlund. Microsoft's stance has become would not block used game sales [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/jimquisition/7444-Xbox-One-and-the-Death-of-Ownership] and that news - plus its price point being $100 less than the Xbox One - is widely believed to have given the PS4 a significant edge over its rival console.

Whether or not Söderlund's comments presage a situation in which EA imposes charges on used games sales - say as part of the approved retailer relationship system for Xbox One, in which the publisher will have to come to an understanding with the retailer - is an open question. That said, if he's to be believed, enough fan support - coupled with permissive first party policies - may mean that used games sales really won't be a problem for EA.

Man, have you ever just stood there and listened to someone when you know they're just bullshitting you?

Because that's what it feels like every time EA do a PR announcement :D

I don't care if it's BS if they are going to do something that support this statement.

Well. BS.

Wait, what? Since when does EA do stand-up comedy?

"Our general thesis is what the fans tell us they want, we'll give them," says EA's Patrick Söderlund, and that includes used game sales. EA
I mean seriously, this is the best joke I've heard in months.

Meanwhile Sony leapt in and said that the PS4 would not block used game sales and that news - plus its price point being $100 less than the Xbox One - is widely believed to have given the PS4 a significant edge over its rival console.
I'd say the fact that MS literally told everyone that doesn't have a stable internet connection to fuck off probably had a bigger impact then the fact that Sony said that they'll have no restrictions on used games.

To be fair, they DID finally give up on the Online Pass. My theory is that EA actually took to heart the fact that they won "Worst Company in America" two years in a row. Considering all the horrible companies out there, it really is rather "impressive" that they took home the gold(en turd) two years in a row. Maybe I'm just a softy and like to give second chances, but I'm willing to give EA the benefit of the doubt in hopes that they'll start making more consumer friendly decisions.

Will I most likely be proven a fool and get bitten in the ass by this leniency? Most likely. Still, I'm willing to give'em a shot at improving their image as it seems they're at least trying to make an effort. At least they're not going around actively telling people to not buy their products in the most arrogant way they can, suggesting that some people just aren't good enough/worthy of owning their games (the way MS did to everyone that doesn't have good internet).

Doesn't this make EA's 3rd major positive comment/commitment to classic gaming? I want to be skeptical about this, but everyone was shocked when they had their conference yesterday. They not only pointed out how they were trying to avoid bad practices, but then pulled out fan niche games that they had few business reasons to make. Mirror's Edge 1 is surely a cult classic, but it never really made them a lot of money the first time around.

It sounds crazy, but I believe them. Internet, I think EA learned something!

Ahahahahaa that one is great, EA!

We'll see. After all, the next gen resale protection is "left up to the publisher"!

Abort mission! Abort mission!

I can understand that it is unfair the developers (and publishers) don't get a cut of the used game-pie but on the other hand, the people selling the game probably are going to get new ones in return. If there weren't any used games for sale, people would just play less games (or pirate them).

They (developers and publishers) just need to find a way to make us (the consumers) want to buy the games new. For example, Naughty Dog succeeded at that for I am just going to order my copy of The Last of Us.

Since Soderlund is basically their marketing exec...

yeah, lots of salt to be had with this comment.

But we'll see, them getting rid of the online pass makes me not really know what to expect.

But oh so much salt still...

Buuuut, like the rest, I'll be looking to see if their actions follow their mouth.

They have no problems with used games since they still want to make money and the online pass bit them in the ass.

Captcha: "What kind of sports fan do you consider yourself?"

Solve media, you may not realized that this is mostly a gaming site... what are these "sports" things you speak of?

Well I like to think that you're trying to change, EA, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, for the moment.

Don't fuck it up.

I'm all for EA making a U turn on their treatment of consumers, though they have a lot of things to make up for over the past few years. Also, it's interesting to note that human behavior still defaults to "if the metric is getting worse by the day, it can only get worse" and "if things are looking up, it will only get better", as is evident by the thread here.

They don't endorse it either so essentially they are just sitting on the fence, hoping not to be blamed for cracking down on used game sales.

If they didn't change their opinions every month I might have some faith in what they say.

EA: "Microsoft has generously offered to take all of our bad publicity for short-sighted, counter-productive anticonsumerism. Please direct all complaints to the Xbox One; we definitely had nothing to do with its new DRM features."

I know that EA has a bad rep around these parts, but come on guys. What does EA have to do? Cure cancer? They announced they were getting rid of online passes, people were sceptical, but guess what? No more online passes. They say they'll allow you to sell your games (within the rules that Xbox One has set out), I for one believe them.
