Um... you know, EA, I'm pretty sure the people crying out against naming them "Taliban" probably aren't for the most part the sort of people who play these games anyway (i.e. paranoid idiots who think gamers can't differentiate between games and real life), but go ahead. Cave to the controversy-farming media and the vocal but insignificant minority. Its the fad these days.

EDIT: Also, the guy above me.

Did anyone bother to ask the Taliban about how including American soldiers in there would effect them? No? Maybe we should rename them [Generic World Power] instead, make it balanced.

I just lost and gained respect for them at the same time. I wanted to fight a real world enemy and that that was very ballsy for them to include the Taliban, but I'm glad they listened to the families too. Honestly, I lost more respect than was gained back. Dammit EA, at least keep it through the beta!

They shall no longer be called Taliban. The faction's name will now simply be "Brown people"
Well, that does fit the military's job description. Bombing brown people, the only reason they joined WW2 is because the Nazi's tried to take over the world, America said "THATS OUR JOB!".

All credit goes to George Carlin for that one.

I ranted about this. Then I thought it would be better served if I delivered it right to Greg Goodrich himself, and so it was.
EDIT: ...Or, at least, so I tried to make it. I can't find this guy's contact information ANYWHERE where I could have a reasonably complex discussion with him (Twitter doesn't count).
For the rest of you, here's a short(er) version:

What's in a name? That which we call a Taliban, by any other name, would still look, talk, shoot, and die just the same. Let's call this for what it is: EA doesn't *really* want to respect the memories and committments of those who have been killed or wounded in action against the Taliban. They're just afraid that any civil outcry at all would hurt their reputation and profit margins. In masking their boogeyman-motivated back-out as fearing it would be 'disrespectful' rather than 'harmful to our profits and reputation', they inadvertantly insult the memories of the very people they were supposedly trying to avoid disrespecting.

The only way to rectify this, in my opinion? A public apology, and either keeping the Taliban in, or removing them, the American forces, and all of the images therein, replacing them with generic, fictional groups...like TF141 and the Militia, for instance. If they're going to reference a conflict that *really* happened, then they should either tell it like it is, or change all of the names, instead of just some of them. To go halfway isn't fair to either side, and is certainly unfair to the audience.

EDIT: Especially with the whole 'stir up easy controversy' thing. There are only so many buttons you can push before I start looking for your contact info, Mr. Goodrich...if it's out there, I'll find it, and we'll discuss this issue.

And thus another video game publisher bows to moral panic weakening our case for games as a legitimate art form and making gamers seem weak and easily compromised.

Oh my god, why can't they just get over themselves.

The following might offend some people. But you would have to be pretty thick to. Should probably spoiler that too.
If you ask me it's going to be another thing similar to "African Americans" whining on about how they were "slaves". It's over already. Stop milking it.
Little side rant there. It's a game. Pixels burned onto an output screen. Not real life.

I feel black people (African American is an incorrect and offensive term) have more of a right to complain about the rampant racism and segregation in our country until the 60's and the rampant racism still ravaging the country today, but hey, go ahead and feel like thats completely reasonable. Just like those damn Mexicans are stealing all the jobs we would never do, amirite?

No marketing could blow up like the MW2 FAGS video.
Bad Company 2.

And really, who cares? We have Nazis, Japanese, Russians etc in these types of FPS and no-one pays the slightest bit of notice. Yet, the moment you actually call them what they are it becomes a problem. If one team in World at War was called SS or Unit 731, then the defenders of public morality would pay attention.

Well, so long as the participants of the project are conscious of subscribing to a thin veneer of censorship for the sake of placating the reactivist masses, they are welcome to it.

Objectively, the word 'Taliban' means 'Pupil/s.' It's only when assigned to a radical group does it become inflammatory.

So, enjoy your not-terrorists shooting not-mercs in not-Orwellia.

Edit:

They need to grow some fucking balls. Might as well include it, the damage is done. The mainstream media isn't going to tell the public it was removed, because all it cared about was the controversy and ratings that comes from villainizing gaming..
Spot on. What is the world coming to, you can't even dare offend people ......

Ok correct me if I'm wrong.
It's perfectly fine to kill and bomb Taliban's, as American's, but it's immediately morally incorrect and bad if you play as Taliban and kill American's, in a fucking video game?
FFS the gaming industry is retarded sometimes.
