EA deal could bring TV-style commercials to games.

Just to be clear, im not defending this, but as the article points out, these kind of adverts are in all sorts of free-to-play and free-to-use apps on mobile devices, so it is one of those things where I guess it makes sense to try it in F2P console games. In fact, im surprised that it has taken this long.

No doubt this will result in F2P games with "Pay £X to remove the ads!" buttons.

So long as these things don't make their way into paid experiences - this kind of stuff just comes with the territory.

Its all a bit shit, really. But if there is money to be made, you'd better believe that some corporate suit is going to try and exploit that.

The only problem I have with this is that the other publishers will watch, and if proven profitable, they'll learn.

Aside from that, I don't care what EA does. They're on my shitlist. Persona non grata, or whatever the equivalent for a corporation is. Firma non grata? Yeah, let's go with that, it'll do. Firma non grata. One might even say I've, le gasp, cancelled them.

So long as the player can turn them off somehow. If the game is F2P then buying X-amount in MT's should turn off ads forever. And they should never exist in any paid game in any form.

Capcom did a similar thing with Street Fighter v briefly, though it was a bit more subtle yet it still, kind of interfere with the gameplay. It was real brief, as Capcom did get backlash for it and they later made an update for the option to turn them off and then later just got rid of them entirely.

As if paying full price, shelling out for deluxe editions, etc. and often having MTX’s isn’t enough. Imagine you’re about to fight a boss and you see that stupid ad countdown in the corner like on Youtube. Could totally fuck with your flow.

Or even if it’s not as invasive, who the hell wants an activity that’s supposed to be about escape and immersion ruined by some idiot wanting to sell you deodorant or something.

“Hey, you’re a gamer, and you’re clearly going to sweat. We get it. No worries because we have a 3 pack combo here perfect for those all night sessions!”

Kindly piss off. I will actively make a point not to buy any product whose marketing sleazes into videogames.

Exactly why I don't bother with most Western AAA developers anymore. I've come here to escape and have fun, not being annoyed by a bunch of stupid ads for crap I don't want, nor need.

Your anti-AAAness is astounding my dude. Surely there are some AAA-s you'd fuck with.

Yes, the ones that cared enough back then or at least pretended to care. The only AAA companies I like are some of the Japanese ones, even then I still have my issues with certain ones, or their practices. The only reason I ever bought The Evil Within games, was because of Shinji Mikami and Tango Game Works. I didn't buy it because the game had the Bethesda logo on it.

I'm not spending 60 plus dollars on shell prices for games that barely or don't function at launch. Or are never fixed at all. I ain't supporting something that sells gambling to children/teens/exploited adults and tries to say it's not gambling. I have high standards; deal with it. Something a lot of gamers can use today.

What about God of War, or Dark Souls/Eldren Ring stuff? Resident Evil? Persona?

You forgot the part of that conversation where I said I dislike most Western AAA developers.

God of War is good because it actually tries. I don't do Dark Souls. Not a Persona fan, but I do respect it. I still love Capcom even though they had a near decade dork age. One they finally got themselves out of. Resident Evil I do care about, but there are certain games I'm on and off with. Some I don't find much interest in.

Alright man, I'm just trying to make sure your heart isnt entirely hate. Hate leads to anger, anger leads to mobile games, and mobile games lead to the dark side!

Remember when EA tried to justify this in their MMA game by saying "Well, there are ads on TV, so we're just trying to replicate the TV experience"? To which I replied "I don't pay $60 for the 'TV experience'." (I haven't watched TV since 2003, and I sure as hell have never bought an EA Sports game, but still.)

Gamers are no longer EA's customers- they're resources to be exploited. And too many gamers are thrilled to pay $60 for the "privilege".

What's funny about that, is everyone I've ever met IRL who was into Sports games, plays them almost exclusively. It has led me to believe that people who play Madden, Fifa, and the like aren't actually the "gamer" in the sense of the word as we apply it. Because outside of sports games, they aren't doing anything in the gaming space save for MAYBE a little CoD on the side.

I don't know if they are just sports fans who only have sports as an interest, or if perhaps they are just hooked on the gambling thrill which is linked to sports IRL pretty deeply. These days with things like Draftkings and Fanduel and shit like that. It's no wonder lootboxes have been so insanely huge in the sports game space.

From my experience, they usually make up for it by giving you some items as seen with the JP version of school idol festival where you can elect to watch an ad for more points for the daily login.

I gonna have to take a page out of Armake21, and say I feel bad for people who spend all their time playing nothing but Madden, COD, FIFA, Fortnite, etc. You are all missing out on the best parts of gaming. Yes, you have a choice, you'll have the mutliplayer memories with your friends (assuming you got them) and family, but gaming is so much more. Good luck remembering any story beats, memorable characters, events, and original soundtracks from any of those games.

I always think of this whenever I hear about a company considering doing something like this.

I willing to bet that if they do try bringing in adverts, the first will be in one of their yearly sports games like Fifa. Watch some ads for some ultimate team points or something and see where that goes. And if it goes well, watch it turn up in other games and hopefully it will result in some proper gamer backlash this time.
