EA Eyes Atlanta for New Studio Location?

Publishing giant Electronic Arts may be looking to open a new studio in Atlanta, Georgia that could employ up to 300 people.

In this economy, even big dogs like EA need to cut expenses. While one way to do that is by reports the Atlanta Business Journal [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/95994-EA-Heavily-Cuts-Jobs-at-Mythic-Tiburon-Black-Box-and-Redwood].

The Journal also reported that EA was considering another site in Georgia - Savannah, to be precise [http://atlanta.bizjournals.com/atlanta/blog/atlantech/2009/12/ea.html]. Clearly, the publisher got a taste for the city when distributing Valve's Left 4 Dead 2 - maybe they want to say "Hi" to Coach and Ellis while they're there.

In all seriousness, it does make sense. California is a notoriously expensive state to live in, while the cost of living tends to be a whole lot less here in the American Southeast - and EA is reportedly also looking at the equally-cheap Louisiana as well as the not-quite-so-cheap Florida. If EA did set up shop in Atlanta, they would be joining ... well, the only other Atlanta-based studio I can think of is Hi-Rez, makers of Global Agenda, but I'm sure they aren't the only ones.

While the Journal's source claimed that "Discussions are really active" about the new EA development center, an EA representative told Joystiq [http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/21/ea-has-nothing-more-to-add-to-atlanta-studio-rumors/] that the company had "nothing more to add to this story."

They must be waiting for the zombies to attack first, just so they can put their L4D2 skills to good use.

East Coast game industry, represent!

For some reason, reading this:

...the equally-cheap Louisiana as well as the not-quite-so-cheap Florida.
made me think of the Southern States as a brothel, and Florida's the slightly more classy consort.

In all seriousness, though, good for them and any future video game designers/developers/programmers/etc. looking for a job in the Atlanta and Savannah areas.

[sub]Also, slow news day? Disregard.[/sub]

It's a good idea. Having a game company in Georgia will be cool, but I really hope they come here to Pensacola, Florida. I really don't care what company it is, as long as we at least have ONE.

So wait. Let me get this right. First they decide to down size by laying off all these employees and now they are opening up a new studio? Are they going to spend a bunch of money to move employees down there or are they going to try and hire some of the lay offs back? If neither then that just a kick in the jewels to all those people that were layed off.

First thing that came to mind was "Why would anyone want to relocate to this dump?"

no offense to the other Atlanta dwellers.

Well, they should open an EA Philadelphia.

I want some developer in my town.

All we got it Bethesda in D.C. south of us. I want something in Philly.

But Atlanta seems as good a location as any.
