EA Offers Free Origin Distribution For Crowd-Funded Games

Electronic Arts is doing its part of make life easier for crowd-funded game developers.

Game development is an expensive business, even for small indie titles; just ask the guys behind Origin [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/116805-Star-Command-Dev-Reveals-Where-the-Kickstarter-Money-Went] for any complete, crowd-funded game.

"The public support for crowd-funding creative game ideas coming from small developers today is nothing short of phenomenal," said Origin SVP David DeMartini. "It's also incredibly healthy for the gaming industry. Gamers around the world deserve a chance to play every great new game, and by waiving distribution fees on Origin we can help make that a reality for successfully crowd-funded developers."

Yes, EA is the Evil Empire and I'm aware of all the many complaints about Origin, but this is still a pretty fantastic move. 90 days isn't a huge stretch of time but it's a window during which most games will make the vast majority of their money and by passing up on it, EA is giving up on potentially significant sources of revenue. It gains some solid PR for Origin in return, but good PR for doing a good thing seems okay to me.

Great news ... Provided they stopped Origin from scanning all your files.
They did do that, right?

Oh no, never mind, it's EA. Lets see how editorial policy goes this time.

Funny how your mind works, isn't it? :)

If they removed that scanning from Origin and the EULA, good. Too bad they took 3 months of people complaining about privacy to do it. So yeah, I'm sure EA put their customer's privacy first ...

But I'm sure your attempt to insult me as a poster painted EA in better light now.

Did you say EA?

Cynic mode... activate!

...

Hmm.

Ohh, ohh, I see. They're trying to push their demonic digital distribution platform down our screaming throats by piggybacking on the whole kickstarter craze while scoring PR points in the process.

I'm onto you and your diabolical plans, EA!

. . .Said the cunning Spider to the Fly, " Dear friend what can I do,
To prove the warm affection I 've always felt for you?
I have within my pantry, good store of all that's nice;
I'm sure you're very welcome -- will you please to take a slice?"
"Oh no, no," said the little Fly, "kind Sir, that cannot be,
I've heard what's in your pantry, and I do not wish to see!" . . .

I wonder what kind of contract these developers have to sign to get this "free" deal. At any rate, this is the smartest thing I've heard out of EA in a long time.

No matter what EA do or already have done, the people who refuse to use Origin now will never be convinced to use it. So can we not have this "EA takes all my info they are evil" "no, they changed that months ago" "my privacy is super important I'm not risking it" back and forth exchange and just sit in our corners, pretending that the other guys don't exist? No, alright then.

That said, while this is all amazing and all and props to EA for doing this, they still need to fix origin to accomidate this. No-one will know about these games since the front page is just cluttered with EA published games and next to nothing else. And no indie games at all. To compare, steam has 16 indie games on it's front page. Origin has absolutely none. Free Origin distribution is worthless if no-one knows about them.

No matter how good this seems on the surface, this being EA i just bet theyre using this to facilitate some other scheme. And not just getting people to get Origin, which is pretty evil in itself.

Oh look EA is being nice... wait... oh no!

OT: There is something behind this. EA isn't doing this to be nice to kickstarters. I cant place my finger on it but there is something wrong here.

EDIT: Its a joke. I know its a good business move to get kickstarters online and people to use Origin. People need to lighten up.

Let's see how BioWare fare after mayor success of their last project in few months, one year.
Then we can ponder how a small indy developer would in similar situation.

EA did a nice thing.

Up is Down.

Left is Right.

Conservative is Liberal.

Actually, scrap that last one.... stupid coalition goverment.

OT: So this was unexpected. Can't wait to find out what the razor blade in this particular candy floss is.

Captcha: Card-Sharp.... apt.

This is how I interpret every message EA has made since developers stopped needing publishers and gamers stopped wanting their shit.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
I'm still not using the damn thing, if I wouldn't put it on for bf3 then I'm not putting it on for anything.
