EA Releases Disappointing Second Madness Returns Trailer

Wonderland was packed full of danger, even before Alice went nuts, but fiery tentacle beasts? That's something new.

A new trailer for Alice: Madness Returns, the upcoming sequel to 2000's American McGee's Alice, seems to suggest that the nightmarish visions that plagued Alice as she lay comatose in the first game, are spilling out into her waking hours as well.

We see Alice walking the streets of London, where a colorful diorama depicting a familiar tea party catches her eye. She sees a reflection in the glass and turns to look, only to have a terrible creature erupt from the diorama and drag her inside. The trailer ends with a ragged voice asking what Alice had done, suggesting that all this weirdness is somehow Alice's fault.

As trailers go, it's not bad, but you'd be hard pressed to make the argument that it was anywhere near as creepy as the first [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/102221-American-McGee-Announces-a-New-Alice-Madness-Returns], which ends with Alice opening her mouth to speak and nothing but blood and teeth pouring out. If insanity is going to be a prominent theme in Madness Returns, it's going to have to crank up the atmosphere, and tentacles don't really cut it anymore.

Alice: Madness Returns is being developed by Shanghai-based Spicy Horse Studios, and will be released for Xbox 360, PC and PlayStation 3 sometime next year.

It's American McGee, it will be creepy. Also things pouring out of mouths at the end of games seems to be a calling card of his (See the hidden room in the last level of Quake 2 single player).

I think the trailer is just fine. Wouldn't want it to give away any of the good stuff, better to experience it first hand.

I assume they're keeping the real creepy stuff secret.

Ok this is the first I'v heard of this, it made me want to check out the original though. cant seem to find it anywhere except amazon and ebay for silly money. is it really that rare as a game?

hoping they put this out through steam and release alice at a good price on there to go with it

Trailer wasn't too bad.

My favourite is still the one where she is at the psychiatrist then he turns into the cheshire cat.

It's one of those gems that was incredibly good but never got a re-printing, so disks go for pretty high sums.

OT: I'm torn on how to feel about this. On one hand, I loved the first game and I know that the second will probably pale in comparison to the point where it's just disappointing. On the other hand, it might be passably good enough to get a real kick out of. We'll see.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man. I thought this trailer was great and it's now got me very hyped up for the game.

I haven't really tried American McGee's Alice. Anyone know where I can still get it from? As far as trailers go, it looks pretty good. I can't wait to see what the finished product will be like.

Well, the fire imagery has a purpose within this version of the Alice mythos. Don't forget, she was the sole survivor (and went nuts from) her house burning down with her family inside. So from that perspective, it makes sense for fire to accompany the apperance of her parents.

Eh, maybe they were going for the whole little girl taken by tentacles angle and some people have been desenetized to that angle too much already.

Either way, I find this trailer to be fine. I like the briefness of it and to be honest...I like it more than the SC2 launch trailer, that was just a bit too stereotypical for my tastes. I prefer some mystery and a brief, creepy foreshadowing trailer does it nicely for me. Each to his own in the end it is.

That said, both of the Alice trailers are still a bit too similar in style to each other for my tastes, including perhaps the final phrase, so in that respect - yes, could use some work.
