Eidos Montreal Shoots Down Rumors of a New Thief Game

It sounds like that Thief game that was rumored last week might not be happening after all.

Last week, a rumor popped up that there was another Thief game in the works [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/170346-New-Thief-Game-Apparently-In-Development-Release-Alongside-Movie] that would release alongside the movie. The rumor came from a post by Straight Up Films, the production company working on the Thief movie. The post read, "Widely considered to be one of the greatest games ever created, a fifth sequel is currently in development to be released in step with this motion picture adaptation." But Eidos Montreal boss David Anfossi had spoken out, basically saying that it isn't happening.

After Square Enix demurred, saying "We don't have anything to announce at this time," Anfossi took to Twitter to be a bit more blunt.

It was a bit of a surprise that Eidos would follow up on 2014's disappointing Thief reboot so soon. Obviously there's still a slim possibility that this could be happening, but without any further evidence, I think we can safely label this rumor as "not happening."

Triple A gaming is in a rather sad state at the moment, I shouldn't read that a beloved franchise is in fact not getting a new sequel and feel pleased.

Still, at least that means there's one series Square Enix isn't actively trying to Squenix to death.

Good. The last one was such a shit storm it gave me explosive verbal diarrhea. I couldn't stop furiously complaining about it on message boards.

So, the as-yet-unreleased game is "widely considered to be one of the greatest games ever created" and would be the fifth sequel in a series that has only four games? I think this post slipped through from a parallel universe.

And they're making a movie of it now? Of the game that made me apologize to Deadly Shadows? I never thought I'd find myself typing these words, but: here's hoping it's a lousy adaptation.

This captures my reaction as well. I love the first three Thief games and was kinda OK with the fourth (lowered expectations through general reception), but... yeah. If they don't bother to keep the general feeling, for which I consider Keepers, Pagans and Hammerites quite essential, Squareenix should consider launching a new gaming universe. There was so much great stuff in the original trilogy aside from gameplay which was completely forgotten in the reboot.

I often wonder if there is any merit in deliberately using old fashioned tech to build a new game - that is to say, would fans of the old Thief games object if a new game was made in the similar polygonal, super low res style from 20 years back? Obviously I'm showing my ignorance here, but I imagine it would cost a fraction in terms of time and resources to put together something super basic and the fans would still lap it up. So why don't they just do it that way?

There's a fangame called The Dark Mod [http://www.thedarkmod.com/main/]. It's basically the gameplay of the first two Thief games, 'cept in the Doom 3 engine, not the Dark Engine the originals used.

Still, it's the closest thing to your idea out there and also the closest to the classic Thief experience since, well, classic Thief.

It's also free, so anyone needing their Thief fix. Have at it.
