After the Azura quest in Skyrim I was kinda reminded about Azuras fickle attitude against people. On one hand Shes a very nice goddess (well at least compared to the other Daedric princes)But if you dont worship her right or follow her orders down to the letter she can go old testament on you in faster then you can say "BY AZURA! BY AZURA! BY AZURA!". Case in point in Morrowinds history. Let me fill in the people who haven't played Morrowind.
Once upon a time in Morrowind the dunmer (dark Elves) look like any other elves. In fact their skin were not dark nor were their eyes red. The dumner were ruled by a Khan or a king named Indoril Nerevar. Indoril had 4 advisers Vivec,Sotha Sil,Almalexia,and Dagoth Ur(also Almalexia was Nerevars wife). One day Indoril recieved a vision from Azura that the Dwemer(Dwarves)were up to no good,and by that I mean they developed the Heart of Lorkhan which through horrific amount of sacrifices it can grant godlike powers to the users. So the Dunmer went to war against the dwemer. The Dwemer out of desperation used the Heart of Lorkhan but instead of giving them power it consumed the whole race. The Nerevar soon found the Heart but not sure what to do with it he left Dagoth Ur to guard it while he went to the other advisers to get ..well...you know! advise! So after a while all 4 of them decided the HEart must be destroyed but when Nervar with the other 3 advisers went back they were confronted by a maddened Dagoth Ur who secretly used the heart and was driven mad.
Ok now heres where it gets weird there's 2 different version I'll just give a short summary.
Version 1)Nerevar wins the fight against Dagoth Ur but was mortally wounded so his last order the Vivec,Sotha Sil,and Almalexia was to destroy the heart but when he passed away, they ignored his last order and used the Heart of Lorkhan.
Version 2)KInda the same in ver.1 but after his fight after Dagoth Ur the 3 advisers betrayed him by KILLING him in his weakened state.
So in the end the 3 backstabbers turned themselves into demi gods and created the Tribunal religion which the Dunmer worshipped them. They also banned the worship of the Daedric Prines including Azura. Needless to say Azura was less then pleased at this outcome nor was she happy about the death of her favorite champion. So she cursed the Dunmer race and gave them their dark skins and red eyes. She also created the Nevarine Prophecy in which the Indoril Nerevar will be reincarnated and destroy the heart or lorkhan and bring down the 3 false gods!
Of course the Tribunal just laughed at her and banned the mention of the prophecy too. *cue the prisoner(AKA the player)being put on a prison boat sent to morrowind*
So what do you guys think? Was it really necessary to punish the WHOLE race just cause of three screw ups? And is it right that she has a habit of messing with peoples destiny and fate. Also in Morrowing she had a follower of hers locked in a hut for like 30 years on a bet with Shegorath of all other gods that the follower wont lose her faith in her.
