Electronic Rubik's Cube Comes With a Hefty Price Tag

You may be able to get a Rubik's Cube for around $15, but why not pay ten times that much to get an electronic one?

The Rubik's TouchCube is based on a cool, yet simple, idea: Take a Rubik's Cube and make it electronic. The device looks nicely built, and ensures that nobody will cheat by just changing the cube's stickers, but is also incredibly expensive with a retail price of $149.99.

The cube can do some interesting things, asuuming you find Rubik's Cubes interesting. It mimics the exact behavior of a Rubik's Cube, enabling the rotation of faces with twists and swipes on its touch surfaces. Where the TouchCube differs from its less-expensive version is with an internal processor that can give hints and knows the exact amount of moves it will take at all times to solve it. You can undo moves easily, and while the TouchCube is placed in its charging stand it will solve itself while you watch. The TouchCube also makes sounds, including modern, soothing emissions along with a classic version of the original cube's twist.

What confuses me is why anyone would actually want to spend $149.99 on this. The only thing that the Rubik's TouchCube seems to be able to do that an actual Rubik's Cube can't is solve itself, which is valuable but not quite worth the roughly $135 premium over a regular Rubik's Cube that it demands. It might be a nice thing to set on the shelf, but am I the only one seeing this having a hard time selling? It's like a Rubik's Cube for casual Rubik's Cube solvers (if they exist), but with a really big price. I have a feeling that I would put this down after one minute, just like I do with a regular Rubik's Cube.

As a owner of the normal one, I cannot understand how anyone would want this. If it can solve itself, I am sure it would be too tempting to just let it do that. And I would never get used to a cube you cannot really twist around...

What I do want is one of the old-school ones my dad got. With sides that are actually in the color, instead of a white cube with stickers on it like the one I got. The two squares I got which just say G for green makes it a lot more interesting to solve though. Which do get boring eventually when you know how.

Uh, why? Yeah I'd expect more expensive, but where are they pulling these prices from. Hand held games are about as complex and for one of those that plays one game, a well made one will cost you 30-40$.

"Dude sweet disco light!"
"No dude, thats my Rubiks cube solving itself!"

And for Puzzle enthusiasts for the simple price of arouns £30 you can buy a Professor Layton game and have hours of fun, whereas you can buy this for a ridiculous price, use it for five minutes then set it on a shelf as more of an ornament than anything else.

Well if it solves itself while it's on that stand it would at least be able to double as one hell of an awesome paperweight. Beyond that I don't know...

I saw this at Best Buy (yeah, not sure what I was doing there) a few weeks ago and thought, "hey cool, might be worth a look" and then I saw the price. I didn't realize the touch screen revolution was still at a premium.

If you really like watching a rubic's cube solve it self, why not just get Magic Cube 4D [http://www.superliminal.com/cube/cube.htm] and let it self solve? It's a hell of a lot crazier to watch. Also if you have 3D glasses, the 5D version is a superior fuckin trip!

Okay, the solving itself when you leave it charging is cool, but I may as well just buy a lava lamp or one of thoe plasma balls which do the lighting up jobby just as well.

Doesn't help that I'm wank at solving rubik's cubes though >_>

People will spend $150 on it for the same reason that they'll spend absurd amount on a replica lightsaber or lancer, or a World of Warcraft beer stein. Except this ridiculous/awesome homage is actually better than the original.

Apparently some collectors will pay $1.1 mil for a Sara Palin Xbox. Makes this seem like a smart buy.

Perhaps you could get one on eBay? Or kindly ask your dad to hand it over, if he's not using it anymore?

Why would you cast aside your cube after 3 minutes? Solving a cube is an art form in itself, and speed-solving it even more so. I own 3 cubes: a regular one, and two limited editions from Longchamp and Toyota. Solving them works like a stress ball for me. It takes me about 5 minutes to solve a scrambled cube that that's all the time I need to unwind from a program debugging issue or other stress factors.
