Now, many people always say that Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns was this groundbreaking thing in comics, with a new vision of Batman, etc...but no-one ever talks about his, albeit, unseen relationship with Dick Grayson, the first Robin. Early on in the first volume, when Bruce and Gordon are having a celebratory meal over the ten-year anniversary of Bats' retirement, Gordon asks Bruce if he'd spoken to Dick lately, to which Bruce replies, "Not for seven years, Jim. You know that."

What could've possibly happened between the two, who were like best friends, for them to cease contact with each other for seven years? Even at
Bruce Wayne's funeral
, we don't see head nor tail of the former Boy Wonder. Too busy being Nightwing to come see his former partner at such time? And was it mainly or wholly on Dick's part that the relationship diffused, since Bruce appears to nostalgically reminisce about him when he's fighting the Mutant leader.

And yes, I know what happens in The Dark Knight Strikes Again and All-Star Batman and Robin, but even though Miller says they're canon in his Dark Knight universe (designated as "Earth-31" by DC), that still doesn't make sense continuity-wise because ASBAR, the prequel to the 80s-set DKR, is set in 2008. Not to mention Batman, despite giving off a Clint Eastwood vibe, was still mostly in character in DKR, whereas he was an absolute psychopath in DKSA and ASBAR.
