Epic: Customers Want Great $6 Mobile Games

Epic Games thinks there's more than enough room in the mobile gaming market for AAA-level apps that cost a bit more than $1.

There's been a lot of doom and gloom in the industry lately about how the low cost of tiny $1 games that people can play in bite-sized chunks on their phones - set against the rising cost of AAA-level development - could be the beginning of the end for big-budget games. Epic Games' European territory manager Mike Gamble thinks that's a load of bunk.

There's absolutely an audience for AAA games on mobile devices like iOS and Android, Gamble said at an Unreal University event in London, tremendously successful [http://www.computerandvideogames.com/311618/news/epic-apps-killing-triple-a-games-dont-be-daft/] Infinity Blade as an example.

"Experience tells us that if you create content with high production values the audience will buy it," said Gamble. "You're customers, what would you prefer to do: Buy a game like Infinity Blade for $6 with plenty of gameplay, good production values that offers a visceral experience; or pay 99c for something you play once and never ever go back to?"

Gamble acknowledged that Infinity Blade was a special case since Apple "picked it up and promoted it heavily on TV, etc," but said that it was still proof that the market existed for games like it - and that Epic had made more than $11 million from the game even after Apple had taken its cut.

"There's an audience out there who want to play good quality games on mobile devices - whether it be pads or smartphones."

This just in, PC gamers want Epic to pay attention to PC gaming and provide a AAA title. More at 11.

I would pay 100$ for a mobile new Jazz Jackrabbit game, Epic. You know that old PC series that you used to make on that played like a combination of Sonic the Hedgehog and Mega Man? Yeah that one.

I think EVERYONE would want a good game for cheap. I call it The Steam Theory[footnote]Yes, I know the title only says anything about great and cheap mobile games.[/footnote].

I would definitely buy a game for no more than 5 bucks on my droid if it had good gameplay and interested me. I paid for both of the Zenonia games and downloaded the 3rd game (but not until they were 99c a pop for the first 2.

I'd say it's more "For a $6 mobile app, I want AAA quality". Although with the power of today's phones, how long before we see a phone with a 3DS cartridge slot?

That's a false choice. The question is more which would I prefer a game like Infinity Blade... or a 59p game like Dungeon Raid with simple aesthetics but great gameplay that I can come back to again and again. And the answer is both. A great game at a great price is worth it if that price is 60p £6 or £60.

Epic is correct. But if their recent games are an indicater, Epic won't be the company to deliver on it.
