OT so these stories will soon be replaced with Star Citizen versions of the same thing. But with real skill in piloting and marksmanship...
Call me again when Star citizen stops putting a cap at 100 ships and allows a real player driven economy.
Ring ring.... Hello you there? Cool I have some info for you....

Player driven economy:
f a player is not available to carry ore from Ellis to Terra, an NPC cargo hauler will step in and run the route. If escorts are needed, and players are unavailable to escort that transport, then NPC pilots will escort the vessel. Pirates, too, might be NPC or player ships.
Yeah the most player driven economy I have ever seen

And the second one describes exactly what I have been saying: There is a cap on maximum ships that can fight each other. The scale is simply completely different

I am rather stoked about the economy myself. Kind of a hybrid of EVE and Freelancer. NPC and player supported at the same time. So if nobody fills a mission the NPCs will after a while.

Sorry I thought you were talking about player cap period because it clearly is higher than 100 on a server. But it is indeed lower for fights in progress, but hey no time effects needed to make it possible to allow for players to fight in decent size groups still.

I think CCP is going to need to work more on upgrading their servers. These kinds of battles seem to be happening with increasing frequency. Of course, if this battle goes on much longer I think the titan population of EVE will be down by 50% percent or more and so there won't be as many ships to cause this kind of stress for a little bit. Unless of course someone calls frigates only and they get half the galaxy to swarm a system.
if the attackers notify CCP beforehand they actually turn on seperate server meant just to boost events like these. and they already have massive server farms that run a lot. its not easy to have 5000 players all at same time visibledoing stuff. no other MMO is capable of that.
i do wish titan population, or heck all ship population would be halved. that would definatelly boost the economy and while i dont build ships i build other things they will be using. and there still be ships unless pilots quit, just instead of titans the people will be flying battleships or dreadnaughs while waiting for new titan to be built.
Oh I'm not saying it's not impressive that they could handle it in the first place, but I'm just saying they may need to upgrade further if things like this keep happening.

Also, apparently this is exactly on the 1 year anniversary of the Battle of Asakai and the final titan kill count (both sides) was between 60 and 80.

Bitter much?

Also, Star Citizen is a completely different slice of cake. You will never see battles of the same scale, where thousands of players are fighting each other at the same time, because no server would be able to support such a thing.
The written word has a tendency to be read without tone. Hope this clears the intent of the first post up for you.

And while EVE and I had fun, I realized it was not a game that required any piloting skill or practical aiming. It boiled down target and let the game do all the aiming and firing. Fun but not a real simulation of flying a Fighter/Bomber/Battleship. The "battles" with larger groups moved so slow there was no real sense of urgency or combat. Yes things were going boom but in all honesty all EVE did was rekindle my interest in Freelancer servers and push me to try Star Conflict [http://store.steampowered.com/app/212070/?snr=1_7_15__13=] . But they were lacking the player driven economy that EVE had, so here is hoping that Star Citizen scratches that itch of all of the above.

If you're getting auto-playing video ads (I assume you mean near the bottom of the page), I don't think that's meant to be happening. I was in the Tech Team chat the other day and FalloutJack mentioned it. I don't know who picks which ads are on the site, but it seemed like the staff weren't keen on that kind of ad either, because it's more annoying than simple banner ads in the margins. If you drop them a line there, they'll probably get rid of it. They might ask you to fill out one of these with screenshots:

(link didn't work, it should be in the grey at the bottom-left of the page):

Basically, you're not alone! :)
i meant the embed twitch stream that auto-started when i opened the tab in the background and the eve guy (darius i think) started talking to my work colleagues. After multiple requests the embed videos in news was no longer made to autoplay a few months back, but i guess twitch embedding uses different code. i dont want videos to autoplay in background tabs, that is very annoying. if i want it to play i will click on it. It also wastes bandwitch (which to me is not important but a lot of people here seems to ahve limited internet).
the intrusive ads do exist and i guess its an automated system (as in ads are not controlled by escapist), but thats where escapists gets money and removing that is outlawed on this site. personally i think there is a line when ads become uancceptable. banners on the side, ect - perfectly ok. autoplaying videos (with sound no less) or unstoppable ads before videos - completely not acceptable. worst thing though was when i got somewhat bugged into that ad that plays after videos, you know that 8 minute long ad for all the content on escapist? it loaded after i watched a video, i closed the tab, opened another video and instead of the video that same 8 mintue ad was playing again, and again, in endless loop. but since a restart solved that i guess the problem was on my end.

Im glad to hear im not alone in not liking this, hopefully they will make their ads less intrusive. However i know plenty of people blacklist escapist as one of the worst offenders there, so theres a long way to go.

worth around 5.5 billion isk so that would be around 8.5 plex,
didnt you mean to type 55 billion instead?
The site I got the info from said the cost was only 5.5 isk, but that must be the cost for some other ship. Another article says that titans are around 140 billion isk. The 70 billion isk per titan is from threads from 2009-2011, so I don't doubt that the cost has gone up.
the mineral prices (the basic components everything is made of) have almost doubled since then so yes, titans are very likely over 100 billion now. of course the large alliances probably have them at hardly above build price as they sometimes build them themselves but its still a very very expensive ship.

any NPC trading on their own destroys player driven economy. players can no longer drive it if as lnog as they deviate from predetermined path NPCS come in to fix it. so no, it wont have player driven economy.

no time effects are needed to support a 100 players fighting eachother. i fought more without any time dilation and no lag (other than that of my own machine not being able to handle that many models, but its my fault for having crap GPU). Its where it goes from 100 to 1000 where the servers start screaming.

im sure they will as soon as its financially feasible. servers cost a lot of money. and the costs go up exponentialy with need of them all working together on things like 5000 palyers fighting eachother. however, technolgoyp rogresses and as faster machines come out they will keep upgrading the servers. in 2012 (i think) they made a massive upgrade in which they changed a lot of their servers to be much more powerful, which almost doubled the player limit in Jita and the like. Also if their presentations in FanFest is to be believed they are working hard on optimizing the thing.

yeah, i thought this was gonig to be a record breaker.

Why do I get the feeling that EVE is primarily dominated by Congressmen, CEO's and Wealthy Entrepreneurs who can afford the time, money, and excel tabs worth of dullful information to play such a 'game'
Because you dont understand Eve?
To be fair, I've played my fair share of CoD back in the day and believe it to be over run by 10-year-olds jacked on sugar, and 'men' with an inferiority complex, so I doubt my lack of understanding the game is the core of my view of it's audience. Though I could be wrong.

The cap is necessary due to the laws of physics. A real-piloting-skill based game can't do the "time dilation" nonsense that Spreadsheets Online resorts to, nor can it afford to allow lag.

And one of the best things about Star Citizen will be that the economy ISN'T player driven, because quite simply, players are dicks. In any game that has an economy driven by players, suddenly everyone thinks they can be the Wolf of Wall Street and tries to fuck with the market. I'd like to keep that kind of bullshit well and truly out of my evening entertainment, thanks.

I like the idea of EVE Online.

I don't like EVE Online, mostly due to the fact that the game is built around the social aspect. I also really hate it how there's no way to go into other people's ships or walk around in your own ship and do cool stuff, especially when real money is needed to customise your character.

Really, developers? If you had a customisable inside-of-the-ship that you can walk around in, you could extort your fans for even more money!
