I thought it was pretty good too. There was a million and one things they could have done to make that movie a lot worse, but it felt like they nailed what they wanted to do.SupahGamuh said:I liked the original 300 a lot... what can I say?, I like it big, dumb and flashy. If the new one is bigger, flashier and slightly less dumber, then I'll definitely have to check this one out.
Lol, I think rabid scorn might be overstating it a little.m19 said:Bob with his rabid scorn for "manly men" and trepidatious delight over "emasculating" women...
But yes Eva Green is amazing.
I agree, I really enjoyed this movie. Did exactly what I thought it should be doing!K_Dub said:I enjoyed the HELL outta this movie. It was fun, pretty, and epic in both its fight scenes and the overarching picture it was painting of a united Greece taking on a giant military power.
And Eva Green. Holy crap. She is legitimately the coolest character on display here. That scene where it's essentially "Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, join me" that Bob mentions in the video? I feel like he's kinda downplaying that. Because lemme just say, hot damn man.
Are you surprised that a social justice warrior like Bob can't keep his own ideals straight?Nurb said:I don't understand the difference here; If I remember right, Bob has been critical of female characters with sexualized aspects if they're in supporting roles, but if a lead role uses overt sexuality it's OK?
Bob used "misogany" as part of his criticism of Hansel and Gretal: Witch hunters because they have brutal fights with powerful (female) witches who ultimate lose because they're evil witches, but here, the lead female role is doling out the attacks on the film's "good guys" which includes using her sexuality and it's absolutely amazing.
Crypteia was considered an atrocity back then. That is one of the reasons so little is known about it. Sparats weren't exactly flaunting it.Hixy said:I don't think you can just say that one nation was good or one was bad when looking back at that time, they just are what they are. All nations like sparta, athens and the rest of the Peloponnesian nations did things that would be seen as complete atrocities now. Even later powers like the Romans did many horrible things in slavery and war. It is more important to look at the contributions these cultures made to modern society and the Greeks made far more than most. They developed ideas of government, philosophy and military doctrine that shaped what you see today. Ideas of good and bad change through history and depend on circumstance you can't try and impose modern values on ancient civilisations.John Nitsolas said:Anchient Spartans == NOT good people!!

Yeah well, I've been of the opinion for years now that Bob should keep off the politics. This is just one of his many moments. At the end of the day he seems to take any opportunity he can to indulge in white male guilt, slam the right wing, or promote extreme left wing ideals, and being consistent with what he's said before has never been his strong suit.Durgiun said:Are you surprised that a social justice warrior like Bob can't keep his own ideals straight?Nurb said:I don't understand the difference here; If I remember right, Bob has been critical of female characters with sexualized aspects if they're in supporting roles, but if a lead role uses overt sexuality it's OK?

Pretty much this. His work would be a lot better if he chose a side (or sub-side of the side) and just stick with the damn thing. He can keep the politics, so long as he isn't schizophrenically switching his beliefs every fucking week.Therumancer said:Yeah well, I've been of the opinion for years now that Bob should keep off the politics. Let me put it to you this way, when you get behind Bob's feminist declarations understand this is a guy who also went into a somewhat freudian slip/rant about her chaining a dude to the bed post and dominating him until he didn't know which was was up and didn't care.
He's also the guy who in reviewing "Piranha 3D" gave it a recommendation because you had two girls making out underwater (and he spelled this out using graphics and everything).
He's also in the past if I remember did what amounted to a lecture about female empowerment through sexualization, referencing Bond girls through the ages.
When Bob makes an attack for being "anti-women" or Frank Miller casting all women as "sex workers" or whatever else it's typically to reinforce something else he's going after, whether that's the right wing/conservative movement, or someone like Frank Miller personally for not agreeing with his general idealogy. He will say attack Frank Millers work on the grounds mentioned, but at the same time say "Piranha 3D" was entertaining and a big selling point for people with 3D machines, when just about all the female characters in that were sex workers as well (working for a porn producer doing a sort of "Girls Gone Wild" bit, the girls making out underwater for example were at it because he was filming them through the boat's glass bottom).
It's no big thing though, Bob has a lot of great information about geek culture overall, and he's fun to listen to, but you need to take the political rants and such with a grain of salt, and no, your not going to get a lot of consistency from him, other than taking every opportunity to go on the attack against positions he doesn't like. He's a lot like me from the other end of the political spectrum, albeit with professional level writing and verbal delivery skills. He also seems to have a somewhat larger axe to grind with the groups he's attacking than I do.
