I've actually seen Romancing the Stone, but it was like 5 or 6 years ago (I'm 19 for the reference). I remember liking it ^^

I had no idea The Smurfs were Belgian, but Bob is right. New York has been done to death, how cool wouldn't The Smurfs in Bruges be? I'd totally watch that movie :D
Ah, ninja'd...fuckin' Bruges.

Wasn't Romancing the Stone related to "the jewel of the Nile" or something? I Can hardly remember.

A good review as ever. About the belgium thing; I'm from the Netherlands, so the're practically living nextdoor, and I can tell you that they probably couldn't care less about this whole rip-off thing. But that's just me talking.

Sorry about the just so standard movie it is almost an achievement (but wasn't) you had to review, and the fact you had to fill the time with talking about the SMURFS MOVIE.

Are we really that desperate to revive old 80's cartoons into movies that we have to dig out the SMURFS? Really? Wasn't Scooby Doo, Transformers, and Alvin and the Chimpmucks any idication that they aren't a good idea. Wait, nevermind, no matter the stupid reason, those movies somehow made embarressing amounts of money.
but soon they will be screwing with 90's cartoons so just let them get through all the 80's cartoons
(but scooby-doo was originally made in the 60's )
They are runing out of ideas so they are taking from the past and just spiting on people's child hood favourites like the teenage mutant ninja turtles that MICHAEL BAY is directing. grrrrrr rage.
NO! NOT A MICHEL BAY MOVIE ABOUT ANIMANIACS! PLEASE SAY IT ISN'T SO!
i would buy a plane ticket to america and kill that bastard before that happens

I'm an American and the very idea of a US Dangermouse makes me want to punch a fat studio executive in the face.

Unsurprised Knight & Day is bland & uninteresting. Surprised the Smurfs movie is going to be so horribly translated.

The Seth Rogen thing? He's an actor whose movies I've never watched playing a superhero I've never read in a film I'll likely never get around to.

Knight & Day: Nothing wrong with that movie. I can understand movie snobs and purist that see movies as an art form to find nothing appealing about it, but for a couple who just want to have a good time, it's the perfect movie. Not all movies are meant to be remembered in 15 years.

Smurfs: Yeah I can see why the kid in all of us be pissed. But hey, I don't care. If I want to see the good old smurfs, I watch the good old smurfs on DVD. I was never waiting for this movie to make me feel like a kid again. Yeah, the cameos and yeah, the product placement, but who cares? Can't watch a foodball game without being blasted with publicity, so why care here? I'm sure my kids will enjoy that movie a lot. Maybe not for the same reasons I did, but again, who cares? Plus the Smurfs in New York? Why not?

We, 80's kids are such big cry babies when it comes to that type of stuff. We put give so much importance on the stuff that we grow up with and we're always complaining because they screw up with what we loved and never meet our expectations. And yet, they keep making movies about our stuff... why? because they make money... why? because we go see them anyway.

Talk to anyone 50 and older. Ask them about the Fugitive movie, the Mission Impossible movies, Lost in Space movie, Charlie's Angels movies, Dukes of Hazzard movies.
You know what will get... either "i liked it" or "i didn't liked it"... but you will never get "that was so unfaithful to the source material" or "they screwed up with my favorite tv show".

You know why? Because they grew up. Got kids and moved on to other interests. We didn't.
I guess that's what we get from spending our childhood in front of the TV.
Also... the Smurfs and the Chipmunks are 50 years old... basically, they belong to them a lot more than they belond to us.

Still I find it interesting to have someone like MovieBob's opinion.
Which I respect by the way.
He is educated, litterate and usually take movies for what they are.

ah... americans and their little new york... if a story doesn't take place there, apparently it isn't worth telling. -_-

I couldn't care less about Tom Cruise as an actor; in fact, that is not entirely truth... I think Tom Cruise acting in a movie now is an indication of the movie being crappy, specially when he is also the producer. Its like his persona and his ego can't fit together on one person, so at times he just goes to sleep and his ego takes over.

I don't mind Seth Green as the Green Hornet... we all know that Kato will steal the thunder on that movie.

I actually didn't get mad or annoyed when I first saw the Smurf'd trailer, mainly because I was too busy laughing at my cousin who was sitting next to me and had just accidentally spray painted her arm blue. But I still don't really mind, because I was never much of a Smurf's fan. but if they ever try to make an Animaniacs CG movie, someone's getting hurt.

I'm from Belgium <3 And yeh, I'm pretty pissed that they decide to take this franchise and bend it over a table like that. I agree one hundred percent that should keep the smurfs where they belong. And yes, why in the hell did they pick New York and not Belgium? This is their home, sort to speak. Hell, the smurf song is from Belgium, sung by the great legendary singer known as Father Abraham.
Father Abraham, who I might add is Dutch, not Belgian. ;)
As for what they did to the smurfs... WHY?
Keep the setting at least, you could have all sorts of fun in a weird semi-magical medieval place which was the smurfs original home.

Damn straight, and I'm not even old enough to have seen it when it was originally on TV.

But a Smurfs movie set in New York? What the fuck? Why would you ever want to do that? Do they have a thing about hating the Smurfs so much that they have to make a bad movie about them?

I think I am the only guy excited for the Smurfs Movie... Only because of Nostalgia I guess... The CGI could be better but I think I will enjoy it... Just like the Yogi Bear Movie that comes out this year (You guys know about that right?)...
