Good review.
Christ I'm so fucking sick of Saw. It was never scary it will never be scary.
Lets have some real horror movies come out.

Yes I have and I found it bloody idiotic. (no pun intended)
I do agree that it was a good review K, and yeah SAW is getting a little old but 5, 2, and 3 were actually decent. The rest of them....not so much.

Paranormal Activity was NOT that good. It was putting me to sleep and didn't scare me. Utterly predictable and the only good parts that I liked were

when she got pulled out of bed and down the hall
when she dug the cross into her hand
and the end where she is fully possessed and kills him then throws him at the camera

i found those to be very entertaining and hilarious. The ending was utterly predictable and if I had not have had a screaming girl attached to my left arm I would have walked out of the theatre or just fallen asleep. I honestly don't get why everyone loves it so much. Can someone explain it to me? and for the record yes, I saw Blair Witch and thought it sucked. However, Drag Me to Hell was a fairly good movie.

Meh, I saw the movie and appreciate Bob's critique more than I enjoyed the movie.. This flick could have been a sci-fi(Sorry syfy) movie or a special episode of "Ghost Hunters". Bottom line is that it was boring
I fully agree with you.

Oh man, that epilogue bashing SAW was so true. I hate that franchise. I barely liked the first one and most of that can be attributed to the presence of Carey Elwes. With a tiny bit going to Danny Glover. And even with talent like that on screen I still won't recommend it to anyone.

Can't believe they made a video game out of that shitty overdone series. I'd rather see Police Academy 17 than Saw 6. I guarantee it'd be a hell of a lot scarier.

I'm not a fan of horror movies and probably won?t see this because of the aforementioned dislike of horror movies, but I'm glad Bob took some time out to tell people to not see Saw. I hated Saw. I thought Saw was terrible and each sequel only got worse, I'm glad I'm not the only person who thinks that.

While I like your reviews, Bob, I'm beginning to wonder about a few things, like the repeated use of "even I liked it!", mostly because practically all of your reviews have included it. So, either there are just a box and barrel full of awesome movies this summer/fall, or you're not nearly as hard to please as you make yourself out to be.

Thanks for slipping in that "Saw" comment. Glad to know I'm not the only one who thought the series turned from clever moral/survival tests to gruesome torture-for-the-sake-of-torture traps after #2 (and #2 was iffy).

Would have liked to hear you encourage people to see it in a theater rather than wait for the DVD, as you did with District 9. This is really one of those experiences that needs to happen on a big screen and loses something when you take it home.

This movie scared the hell out of me when I went to go see it. I say it was in how they built up the tension, with each activity seen getting more and more unexplainable and wild. It's a little crazy how it starts off with a door moving two inches by itself and then
getting to the point where an invisible force is dragging the poor girl on the ground in the second to last big scare of the movie. I tell you, that is the single most effective scare I've ever seen in a movie because:

A) it looked incredibly convincing, because she gets dragged out of bed by something you can't see in full view thanks to the aforementioned master shot and the special effects were incredible.
B) it comes almost from nowhere, such that by the time she's being dragged out the door you've only just said to yourself 'yes, this is actually happening'.
C) it creates tension when the girl is dragged out of the room and you hear a huge tussle off-camera and you're really hoping that the guy can get her out of there.

But yeah, the people in the theater I was in actualy laughed at the fact that there are no opening or closing credits with this movie. I wasn't as inclined to do so.

Great clip! You're the reason I joined Escapist!

Love these reviews.

For the record, I hate the Saw films and I cannot understand why on earth they are so popular.

Saw P.A. a few weeks ago and it is amazing. I liked it a lot better than I thought I would. However I am a saw fan, sure they are getting worse, but now its a tradition with my friends to see it opening night at midnight every year. Still, if given a choice, go with P.A. its original and a good movie.

to the average desensitized horror game player (FEAR, Silent Hill, Fatal Frame) this movie is far from scarey. a few bumpy sounds, a couple of unexplained events, and the story and time inbetween which links them. however as a crowd dynamic you are more likely to get startled once or twice simply as the girl two rows back screams bloody murder when the unexpected terror event occurs on screen.

if you want to watch this movie i would suggest you to do it while it is still hyped and large crowds go, as that is half of the film experience.

the sad thing for me is that i found many of the scenes more helarious than scarey.
in the back of my head i am imagining that the dark spirit like a type of 'pedo-bear' and said 'I want to smell you...' and 'Raping time!' during key events in the back of my head.

I've heard nothing but good things about this movie, and I think Moviebob has summed up what I've heard quite correctly: see it because it's done well. Good review kind sir, good review.

Well put with the "Saw sucking since part 2" thing... Though i still enjoy the massive amounts of blood, the "Tourture yourself to save yourself" stuff is getting old.

Saw a small fracture fraction, and nearly threw up.

If that's torture porn, then I don't understand the fetish.

Moviebob, I must say that while I still rarely agree wih you about the bigger films (I liked Star Trek and Transformers 2, and hated Drag Me to Hell) I very much appreciate your ability to intelligently analyze a film and present it without devastating spoiler issues that so many reviews do these days and instead focus on the technical and artistic aspects of what is being presented.

I was planning on seeing Paranormal Activity, just as I planned to see many of the films you have been reccomending lately, and I hope that your perspectives on certain plot developements there in help me to better appreciate the film.

But mister Bob, what about REC, that has to be one of the best Camcorder held films (whats the proper genre name?), ever. Its not even made worse by the fact Hollywood ripped it off, and made it worse, like 2 day's after it came out.

I lol'd at the concise summary of the oldest horror element ever: 'things going bump in the night'. XD

I stopped listening at the point he said he liked cloverfield. I'm not going to take film recommendations from anyone who thought that piece of trash was good.
