Well, it's not a surprise Movie Bob did find also "Suckerpunch" to be a "great" movie.... So desperately trying to find any substance when there is none, it's reeaally pathetic.
Actually, from the perspective of someone who has actually studied films and the theory behind them to an extent, Sucker Punch had a lot of stuff going on, its just not entirely obvious stuff unless you know what to look for.

Ok, I am a fan of the MLP G4 show, and I know it get at some point to a ridiculous level, but damn Bob, did you really need to address that ponies are in the movie? This one that the most unimportant piece of information I ever heard to make a movie more "interesting".......

Example below:

Did you know you can find a Derpy Hooves from MLP show reference in the game Intrusion 2?

Look VERY closely in the orange screen.

Did you ever heard a reviewer talking about ponies when he wrote/spoke his opinion about this game?
NO!!!!

Sure, it is very cool and very interesting to find this secret myself or find a specific article about the secrets of a game, but not when you reviewing a movie that doesn't have to do NOTHING with the subject you are talking about!!!

Seeing the mentioned Disney actresses like this makes me feel dirty... Am I alone in this?
No, you're not alone. The entire idea just feels "icky" to me, like people are fantasizing about underage girls but pretending it's all OK because they're legal now. Yes, technically it's OK, but if your only reference point for these girls are from Disney shows, what does that say about you? :p

Every review I've read, even the positive ones, indicate that this film is a glorification of debauchery shot like a pornographic film while trying to convey a greater social message. Take that for what you will.
Good, someone agrees... After no reply to my message in so long I was getting worried...

Agreed, sometimes I think he tries to hard to place a hidden themes or messages in movies when its clear that there wasn't one.

Saw it.

Y'know, I'm rather pissed my wanting to see this came down to a recommendation because it meant I had to come into it with a preconceived notion of what it was about and I feel like it sucked out a bit of the fun of discovering it. For my money though, I think Bob's spot on: these are sick, twisted characters who can't seem to figure out when enough is enough, even when things get nasty. The ending I honestly felt was fabricated, as in there was simply no way it should've turned out like it did:

You're honestly telling me two teens with barely any experience with firearms completely waste a gangster's stronghold full of armed guards and emerge unscathed? Malarkey I say!

Yet, I think there was a reason - it asks "Now what?" And for some of these characters, banal and sad as they are, it's the most disturbing part of all.

Also:

The ponies are in the background on tv. The girls sport unicorns on their masks though so it's kinda the same?

Just out of curiosity though: is there really such a thing as "wrong" inspiration (outside the stuff that hurts others)? I know what that's supposed to mean and I agree on some level, but it also seems presumptuous to judge what makes others happy. I'd normally be on the bashing side with this, but lately the judgement has spawned the "hate culture" that makes me question it all. Why do we have free will if what makes us happy or gives us meaning is ultimately "wrong?" How do we determine "right" and "wrong"? Does any of it matter? ......and those questions are why I like this movie.

Haven't seen the film, but it doesn't surprise me that some people aren't agreeing with Bob at all on the extrapolations. Coming up with ridiculously over-reaching , narrow and meticulous subtextual meta-analysis to legitimize and pedestalize something that gives him an erection or involves a movie/director that he likes, is basically flowchart MovieBob.

(not that he, by any means, has a monopoly on such a thing)

Even if the reaching rationalizations could prove to be correct; in my book you've probably still f****d up some-where as a director if you set out to make a movie with an earnest message, and 99% of the movie turns out appearing as almost nothing but tasteless depravity that most of your audience won't be able to interpret in a proper context.

I saw beyond the "surface", but I'm disappointed that bob said this was 'great' ... to each his own but i used to see eye to eye with his reviews on a lot of things -- not that it makes a difference.

I thought this movie was just terrible, and i also think of myself as a 'movie-snob'...

There were so many awful scenes that failed what they were trying to achieve... (insert proofs here, but it's really irrelevant in the grand scheme of life, despite me already writing this)

I went in expecting a mindless film, recognized that he was trying to make it something "deeper" but really hated it and thought it failed on so many levels.

Oh well, we all have our opinions.

So finally got around to watching it. Bob did overhype it a bit, but then again i always found the MTV Spring Break thing to be revolting so most of the movie just seemed like a waste of time. Okay yeah things did improve when Alien showed up and you were legitimately paranoid as to whether or not the spring breakers would survive, but it's kind of hard to care since the only one i kind of liked leaves after Alien becomes a major character.

Oh and as to the pony thing, that's actually bullshit. You do get two clips of a bizarre dubbed version and i think that their pink ski masks have an older MLP princess on it, but that's it. It will just come off as a non-sequitor cartoon bit kind of like that creepy cartoon Butch was watching during the Christopher Walken scene in Pulp Fiction.

I finally got to see this on DVD. My fiance and I really enjoyed it, though myself more so than her. It really got us talking. The movie isn't "deep" with some kind of hidden message that only professional movie watchers and academics can find. What's fascinating is the presentation of the film. The whole movie looks like a music video and is largely composed of non-traditional camera angles that put the viewer in the middle of the scene rather than observing from a safe distance. I never felt like we were supposed or expected to sympathize with the characters, but I was convinced that the characters were blinded by their own expectations of life (and spring break). I thought James Franco delivered an excellent performance as well. This movie fascinated me and is unlike any other film I've ever seen.

Also, I went to the college where they filmed 95% of the college campus scenes and background shots. So yeah, New College is still making itself known to a very limited audience. It's also only a 60 minute drive from St. Petersburg where they filmed the rest of the film.

I guess I simply don't have the cultural background to enjoy or find meaning in this film. For me it was a simple 'meh' and nothing more.

Ya burned me Bob, I'll take note and look as to why you recommend a movie from now on.
