I had hoped you were going to review Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, oh well, I might have to go in not knowing! gasp!
MovieBob hasn't reviewed the movie I thought/hoped he would review in a while. I didn't even know this movie existed.

Thanks movie Bob for this opinion... It was quite interesting to get an american opinion on that movie. It changes me from the quite conventianal french critics. Though I sometime think you might have overbashed on it (especially with the Oscar thing, which wasn't at all what the picture was aiming at, at first, maybe the Césars, but never the Oscars), your critics are really well thought.
Now you pronunce french name really well, except "Dujardin", but nonetheless it's impressive

Having actually seen The Artist, I highly recommend it. I don't disagree with most of Moviebob's criticisms at all - the film's characters are underdeveloped and the story is formulaic - though I do think he's approaching it from a different angle. If I had to expand on his metaphor, I'd have to say that The Artist isn't a Starbucks, it's more like your local coffee shop; it provides the same service as a Starbucks, but the way it provides that service makes all the difference.

In other words, The Artist isn't a pretentious oscar-baiting movie, it's just a deceptively simple movie; it does follow a formula, but it follows the perfect formula. It doesn't boast the intelligence or innovative qualities that Moviebob considers as requirements for Best Picture award winners, rather, it only boasts the massive amount of love and care with which it was clearly made, which makes it one of the best feel-good movies of all time; you'll be glad to have seen it.

I love how Mr. Chipman exclaims loosely how this movie is parallel to Grindhouse in deserving an Academy Award, yet would have splooged all over himself if Grindhouse ever won such an award.

What happened to MovieBob? He used to be some schlub from Lowell that reviewed movies like your "Average Joe" would. Now, he's way too full of himself, despite still being some schlub from Lowell. Every single week we have to endure a still shot from The Critic and/or hear about a movie not being screened for reviewers. Ok, we get it. You want desperately to be considered legit and shove it in everyone's face that you're a "film critic". Out of curiosity, does anyone know what his qualifications are or what school (studies) he attended to grant him such a title that he flaunts around like a whore with herpes?

I miss old MovieBob. I miss the swearing, the anger, and the unabashed ogling of hot women. Old MovieBob tore the shit out of Michael Bay, and that was fantastic. New MovieBob apologizes for bashing Michael Bay because he has his "career" to think about. Such a shame. MovieBob sold out even before he began. Now he's just a sheep trying to jockey for position at the Herald. Even worse, probably the Patriot Ledger.
Yeah I miss coming here every Friday looking forward to seeing one of the movies out now getting it head handed to it instead I get a lecture about how dumb I am for not being in to stuff from film festivals. I mean it not like some movie in the very tired possesion trend of movies came out today or anything.

Its like he is becoming Brad Jones's Character the cinema snob.

I actually hate you for suggesting Tree of Life last week. Such an awful pretentious mess. You know your movie sucks when even Sean Penn doesn't get it.

This looks too much like oscar bait and not interesting enough for me, i'm not really a silent film person so I'll give it a miss, don't really care if it wins best picture.

Wait, what is Prometheus, and what makes it deserve a place between the only 2 movies I've ever looked forward to a year before their release??
I always enjoy the honest and human nature of your reviews, Bob, and this one encapsulates it very well. It's the reason you're the only movie critic I follow.

You know, if anyone but Joss Whedon was directing it I'd be right there with you. But I just refuse to let this movie be anything but amazing, it's got too much of the things I love in movies. Still, I definitely see where you're coming from, there's just too much already given with the movie, not enough space for it to surprise or develop.

Kinda surprised to see "Prometheus" as the third anticipated of 2012 instead of "Dark Knight Rises."

Who does that say more about- "DKR" or MovieBob?
You know, DKR has quickly gone from one of my most anticipated movies this year to one I don't even plan to watch. There are a lot of factors for this, but the biggest one is simply Bane. And in this week's media sandwich Bob said pretty much the same thing for the same reason.

Ridley Scott Alien prequel.

Umm, he hasn't changed at all, it's award season, the movies are usually pretty good around this time because of the Oscars. Wait til Summer and he'll be raging again.

In fact if they fuck up some of the movies he's anticipating, I doubt we'll here the end of it.

Ridley Scott Alien prequel.
Ooh. That sounds interesting. Not as big of a fan of Ridley Scott as Jackson and Whedon, but I'll definitely keep my eyes out for that. Thanks!

HOW DARE YOU SIR! How dare you compare such a terrible terrible movie such as Jack and Jill to the magnificence of Dunkin Donuts coffee. I would take DD over Starbucks and day.
Fun fact dunkin donuts plays a prominent role in that movie.

Well he directed the first Alien, so there really isn't a better choice. :p

Oh, of course, but I'm not as big of a fan of Alien as I am of LOTR either (Whedon doesn't have a big movie to his name, but I have immensely enjoyed his TV series).

Just got back from this movie. Absolutely loved it. Bob raises some valid points, but I think his preconception that the movie should offer some kind of insightful deconstruction of the silent movie era kept him from enjoying the movie for what it was. This movie isn't about clever subtext for insightful watchers to over analyze. It is a whimsical love story expertly executed, with genuine humour and emotional resonance. Any awards it receives will be a result of this execution. You either buy into its gimick and extremely whimsical tone, in which case you will love it, or you don't. Not for everyone.

Brooks did it better, years ago. Which is almost unfortunate. I'd have passed this over if a friend hadn't said it was a spoof silent film, which, as many things do with the word "spoof" in their description, led me to Mel Brooks, and how he's never done me wrong. So, in I went, to compare.

And I liked the Prometheus trailer, though the actual trailer being blocked by the slowly developing text was kind of annoying.

Nice to see you're looking forward to Prometheus
Pssh. Brooks drew the curve.

I don't think Grindhouse really qualifies as a "weel-observed mimic". "Well-observed parody" I'll grant you, but the tone and production values (the latter being in many ways the defining trait of actual grindhouse movies) are so completely divergent from the material that inspired them that I can't really consider it a recreation. I always get the impression that Tarantino and Rodriguez are being tongue-in-cheek about the whole thing, whereas what always attracted me to grindhouse movies was the absolute sincerity with which they usually approached absolutely ridiculous subject matter.

I don't know, I'm kind of excited for DKR but Prometheus looked awesome from that first trailer! It's fairly well known he wants to see The Dark Knight Rises so maybe he was just giving a shout out to a film that might be the return of the classic Alien sci-fi horror that we all know Ridley Scott for. I certainly hope he succeeds with it.

I'd love to get an Alien prequel that doesn't involve Predator or more so doesn't suck balls. Hopefully Prometheus does that. And yeah, I know it's not entirely about Alien but it's set in that universe and before it so I say it is in my own opinion. Same way The Hobbit is a prequel to Lord of the Rings. Has little to do with the better known tale but it's set in the same universe so it might as well be a prequel.

I really liked this movie and I'm glad you reviewed it as I'm sure some people didn't know about it until they saw your review, and maybe they'll go see it now that they know it exists. I wish it had played with being silent a bit more but it was very enjoyable. I watched it twice back in October (with different people) and I would watch it again. This being said I can't disagree with the fact that it's pretty predictable.
But I mean, it's a romance movie. Of course it's obvious, if not quite clear why, that they like each other. It's like saying an action movie has some fast-paced scenes.
