Escapist Shows - What happened?

A few years ago, The Escapist had a lot of original narrative shows. Stuff like Doomsday Arcade, Tales From the Table and Doraleus and Associates (yes, I know D&A is back on the Hank and Jed YouTube channel, but the point is that it's no longer hosted on The Escapist.

So what happened? At one time there was such a demand for original content that there was a contest for people to create pilot episodes (heck, I even created a pilot, but made it too long. Oops). Did the demand just die out?

Personally, I really enjoyed the shows that were on The Escapist. Many of them were funny, entertaining, and engaging. I miss having them on the site.

And another question is "what can we do to get more original content back on The Escapist?

I think that basically, back then it was the best option available. The pay could have been better. The audience could have been bigger. But it was still pretty decent. Nowadays there are other ways to get viewers and you don't need to rely on The Escapist giving you exposure.

But this is all just my guessing. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Money and time, kid. Money and time. The Escapist lost a lot of their content when they had issues paying, which happens. I'm betting ad revenue dried up. Then you have producers choosing more lucrative paths, issues with ideology or management, etc. I bet when the Escapist finds itself able to branch out again, we'll start seeing more shows again. There's a lot of spots open..

There Will Be Brawl and Apocalypse Lane are among my favorites. I have their badges shown on my profile for a reason. I would absolutely be glued to the site if we had another animated series that good come back or if we had something as truly special like TWBB hit the Escapist's front page again. I also wouldn't mind a second webcomic again, if we're dreaming. <.<

Well in the case of LoadingReadyRun they stopped doing weekly sketches so they could work on other projects that they never got time to do previously as the sketches took most of their time. Plus they have a Patreon as well now which is a relatively new way for people to get funding without losing a chunk to a third party.

Well The Escapist clearly knows there's a demand for more than just Yahtzee and MovieBob (Bob, you do NOT need another show or column), however attracting animated shows and narrative series must be quite difficult, especially when a lot of people are already doing that much more lucratively on Youtube, and the Escapist isn't about to offer incentives.

If they could somehow get more shows, that'd be great, but I can understand why they can't.

The Extra credits scandal and the failure of Game Dogs is what happened. Game Dogs cost the site alot of money and the Extra Credits scandal cost them alot of goodwill. It also showed that this site has issues when it comes to paying contributors who are not Yahtzee and MovieBob. After those incidents there was a pretty big decline in new content with Jim being the only big get for the site in while.

Yeah. Russ Pitts is great and does great stuff.. but the show that will not be named was just terrible. And the EC fiasco was the beginning of the end for real solid original content on the site that wasn't tied to either long time contributors or already existing staff.

It was a show produced and created by Russ Pitts who was at the time also the head honcho of the Escapist. It was about Dogs who developed video games. It was a parody or how a game development studio worked with alot of hyperbole inserted to make it more entertaining but with dogs instead of people.

It was the 2nd most hated show on the escapist, but since it was Pitt's baby it got to go on alot longer than any other show would have. I thought it was just kinda meh overall most of the jokes fell flat. However if you ask some people who around back then you would think that the show was such shit that it created a shit singularity which sucked the funny out of the whole site.

As a result it at the time become a in site meme of denoting terribleness which is why Objectable wrote what he did.

When I read this title, I knew someone would be at the very least thankful that The Escapist's current content lineup doesn't have something like Game Dogs.

Didn't Game Dogs end with everyone dying or something? That show was pretty awful.

Anyway, I will agree that the escapist could use more content. Kinda slim pickings at the moment.

And now he's gone as well, leaving us with a decent webcomic, a very politically-biased movie reviewer, and everyone's favorite foul-mouthed Australian to review a few games.
