Off the top of my head... party based puzzle game, with a variety of instanced dungeons? Come to think of it, it is doable. It's not the first time Zelda has been multi-player. 4 Swords was one of the best Zelda games ever...

I'd set it in Windwaker. That way, higher level stuff could venture below the waves into old Hyrule. Difficult to set up high level replay though. Perhaps some player made dungeons? Race clears? Active disruption by other players for PvP.

Levelling would be a ***** though. I guess you could use levels to limit item use (need to be lvl. 9 to use a boomerang). Item type specialisation to create short cuts... could be an interesting idea for team building pre-dungeon entry, especially in the speed clear races.

Could be fun really.

EDIT: And you could instigate the greatest online en masse suicide...

As a fan of the series, I can say Zelda needs to try something new.

That said, this is *NOT* what I fucking mean!

I have to wonder what the hell everyone's problem with MMO's are? Everyone seems to have this kneejerk reaction to it as if it automatically would make it a bad game.

So it's been stated multiple times that this is a false alarm and was about the website but even if it wasn't the MMO thing is still very stupid and the article name is very misleading. What I would think from the article without the title would be something like the previously mentioned online version of four swords which would actually work out pretty well. I doubt that it actually will be that but I certainly hope because it would probably be pretty fun and it would give that Wii mic some more use.

"The rating can be traced back to 2001, and it is possible to get ratings for simple online Flash-based games, so this may have been established as a part of Camp Hyrule. We can't be sure of why, but we are sure that the rating is for the website and not a new game."

Yeah, this sounds accurate. And as for the game that was talked about in '09? I'd bet 50 bucks that game is Skyward Sword. Or have we all forgotten about that game already?

ESRB has made mistakes before... Like how they rated EarthBound, even though Nintendo of America STILL hasn't released it for the Wii's Virtual Console!

Maybe its a game that will allow link to travel throughout the series continuity by visiting the different "times" in his life\lives\etcetera, so it will be every link game mashed into a single super duper ultra universe game.

Like space quest 4. but with link and fewer amazonians.

or maybe its much ado about nothing.

I'm a massive fan of the Zelda games, and yet I could see this working. If done properly.
Imagine, it being set during the "great war" mentioned in Zelda lore, therfore no Link and not having the game rely on one major hero,I think an mmo be a cool way for players of the series to experience the war. It could all the different Zelda lands, of whichever timeline they fit, like Hyrule, Termina, Koholint Island ect.
Also with the planed "touch screen" controllers for project café inventory, quest, and item management could be carried out easily without ruining the massive HD version of hyrule shown on the new system.
Anyway just my thought, as long as it doesn't go down a four swords route, where EVERYBODY is link aha :D

I love Zelda, but I am sure this would suck. Seriously, please don't do it, work on something more meaningful and interesting.

Using LoZ mechanics this would be absolutely atrocious. However the Zelda Universe could make a great setting for an MMO

Nintendo, stop. Now. Zelda doesn't work as an MMO, and you know that very, very well. I hope.
Pokémon, on the other hand...

Not sure if that is really going to happen-Nintendo have one of (if not the) the worst online systems in the history of gaming and a Zelda MMO seems like too big a step for them to make.

I like Zelda and MMO's are fine, but I'm not seeing how they could mesh together into something that works.

A Zelda MMO would suck. It's a series based on solo-hero-exploration becomes another online grindfest? No...I don't buy it, and I wouldn't want it in any case.

A compilation title sounds more likely. Lets hope that Nintendo is going to handle Zelda's 25th Anniversary better than they did Mario's (lets repackage an old SNES compilation and slap some memorabilia into the case...shameful given that Mario made them a household name).

I'm guess I am the only one that was actually excited for this before I found out it was a mistake. It would be so easy to implement and wouldn't be that hard to do since most of the mechanics are there to begin with.

Maybe I was just excited because it would of meant Nintendo was tackling there online issues, Zelda multiplayer would easily be in the lower risk to fail along with Pokemon.

I just wonder whatever happened to Skyward Sword. There has been practically NO news after the video reveal.

I could see this working; the variety of races and the amount of lore in LOZ would lend itself well to an MMO, as does its overworld-to-dungeon design.

Whether it suceeds or fails will likely depend on two points; can they get experienced MMO devs on their team, and will they be able to provide the online infrastructure necessary for an MMO. Of course, the latter issue only applies if the game is being made for their next console, cause there is no way in hell the Wii could support an MMO.

EDIT: Oh, It was just some confusion over a website? What would that have to do with the ESRB?
