Eternal Darkness Trademark Hints at Digital Release

"Downloadable electronic game software" was added to Nintendo's existing Eternal Darkness trademark, which previously only covered physical releases.

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, originally released in 2002, was one of the Gamecube's standout titles. As memorable for its panic-inducing "relaunched [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_Darkness:_Sanity%27s_Requiem#Sanity_effects]), but there may soon be a new way to play the original. Nintendo has amended its Eternal Darkness trademark, adding "downloadable electronic game programs" and "downloadable electronic game software" to the "goods and services" section.

Nintendo has been renewing the trademark [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/122753-Nintendo-Renews-Eternal-Darkness-Trademark] to keep it from expiring, but this appears to be the first time any mention of downloadable services has appeared in the listing. Of course, Nintendo could just be covering its bases in case it wants to offer downloadable Gamecube games on the Wii U or any other platform going forward, or perhaps this trademark addendum means something else entirely.

Unlike Nintendo 64, SNES, and NES titles, Gamecube games aren't currently available digitally on the Wii U's Virtual Console. Perhaps this is a sign that we'll eventually see a whole new console's worth of titles available to download in the foreseeable future; Nintendo hasn't commented on this, or the Eternal Darkness series. In the meantime, if you're feeling nostalgic, the Shadow of the Eternals Kickstarter has 25 days to go, with just over $170,000 of its $750,000 goal raised.

Oh, please let this come to Wii U.

And if this is indicative of more GC games coming to Wii U Virtual Console, all the better! :D

N64 games aren't available for download yet, at least not in the NA/EU. But, like Andy Shandy said, I really hope this is a sign of more Gamecube games to come to the Wii U VC.
Technically speaking, the N64 games aren't on the Wii U's Virtual Console that allows for tablet play. However, the Wii Virtual Console has N64 games and can be accessed from the Wii U, it just requires you to use the Wii's equipment. But semantics aside, the GCN was full of classic games and the Wii U is obviously powerful enough to emulate them if the Wii was already running backwards compatible firmware with the GCN. I'd kill for a digital release of Rogue Squadron 2, Smash Bros Melee, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, Eternal Darkness, both Baten Kaitos titles, Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Chibi Robo, Skies of Arcadia Legends, Soul Calibur 2 (with Link) and Tales of Symphonia. Even if I own physical copies of those titles, my official branded controllers are nearly shot.

Hopefully we start seeing Gamecube VC release at some point. The VC so far has had smaller releases, but are also more consistent.

Adding this to the Wii U will be a win-win for everyone and also another chalk up for another great game.

Couldn't give any fucks about it not coming to anything like Steam since the game was on a nintendo console.

The "Shadow of the Eternals" Kickstarter persists? I really thought they'd given up after all the rigmarole.
