EVE Collabarative Movie Knocks 'Em Dead

Storytelling in EVE Online [http://www.massively.com/2009/04/05/eve-evolved-storytelling-in-eve-online/] has been going on for sometime now, but one fan got that little bit extra when he asked CCP for help.

CCP seem to be writing the book on good customer service at the moment, so it's not unusual to see another story on its strong ties with the community.

Case in point, an EVE Online player named Dire Lauthris [http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1037737] was trying to make a fan movie to show the Caldari-Gallente war (part of the backstory) and ran into trouble locking down the actual history.

He wrote to CCP asking if there was any extra details he could have missed and it shared a lot more than that. Namely, an invitation to CCP's office, one of its employees narrating the story for him and access to CCP's professional movie making equipment.

The end result, "Day Of Darkness II", puts a lot of Hollywood blockbusters to shame, and provides a fitting testament to what can happen if fans and devs unite for a noble cause. [http://www.massively.com/2009/04/03/fan-made-eve-video-day-of-darkness-ii-blows-away-players-and-de/]

Holy... Just wow. This was made by CCP just letting a player come in, telling them the history, and letting the player use their equipment.....

Wow I hope this hits big on the web so other companies can see what truly can happen when studios and players work together.

That was pretty freaking awesome. Props to the player who made it too. It really is good to hear that companies out there do still care.

All it makes me think is, Why did Battlestar have to die?!
But yeah. If its making me think that, and not, "Oh, its kinda rough there..." then they've done a damn fine job.

Well, someone also did this to World of WarCraft. The movie is about 1½ hours long and contains an epic story-line.

It's the most downloaded movie on http://www.warcraftmovies.com/ and has won most awards.

This scares me. How can a big faceless corporation act in the best interest of the consumer, much less go out of their way to do some thankless good?

I could say through pure altruism, but I guess there's also a nice slice of PR in there.

My thoughts exactly. I watched the video, but even though I don't play EVE I was intrigued.

I can safely say they've earned the good press by doing this.

I thought it looked pretty awesome, being the massive Caldari buff that I am, but there is a thing or two I'd add. First, I absolutely loathed the narrative voice. I mean, really. CCP could have at least lent the synthesizer they use on the in-game computer interface; not the exact same voice, but I thought this was not that good. The second thing is at the very end, I'd have loved to see the admiral's Chimera break up in the atmosphere; I see where there could be technical problems with this, so I would have been satisfied with a kind of "animated still" similar to at the beginning, with the bombing of the Gallente city (I believe it was called Nouvelle); there is a rather infamous picture in the Chronicles featuring it, adding a bit of movement to the skies and some glow to the smoke trails of the descended debris would have made what was an experience that made me hard, in a figurative way, keyboard-despoiling worthy.

Oh, and Tales of the Past III was shit. It was pretty shit, but it was still fanboy, unrealistically awesome shit; sounds funny when applied to a background as infamous as LORELOL WoW, but even I thought I could be a Thrall or Tyrande or, at the very least, a Shandris Feathermoon when the game still had that new car smell. In the end, to me it was just nerds trying to integrate themselves into a damningly immovable game universe.
