Confirming I was on voice comms in a different channel when this went down.

Hilarious spin on this. It wasn't their PLEX, it belonged to their enemies, and it's better off destroyed than belonging to them. That's how it goes.
Wait so are you saying, this guy undocked with his ENEMIES Plex, and ANOTHER Enemy destroyed that plex? Or..

Eve makes my brain hurt.

EVE shows us once again how fun space combat can really be. I miss playing it...

Oh god...I would be soooo angry!

...But, thats such a bad way to do things, developer side...why would they put something like that at risk so easilly...I...I would be talking to some GM about it, but, I bet it will be a less than Luke warm reception
It isn't bad on the developer side because CCP loses nothing in that. Quite possibly that Plex wasn't bought with real money, so the only thing lost was time and effort.
Nobody forced the person to put the Plex on the ship, and nobody forced those two loons to shoot at it. I doubt anyone will be crying to a GM about it because they knew the risks involved.
It isn't just those two loons that are idiots, but who would put something that valuable on an unescorted ship?
That's like shipping uranium in a lone cargo ship past Somalia. Who you gonna blame when the ship gets taken over?

Excellent, that would taste as sweet as when you do catch ISK-sellers' ships out in the open. They don't spend money on weapons or ammo for their ships so it is just a turkey shoot, and very expensive loss for the isk-sellers.(Though they are very slippery buggers)

Why do I have a sneaking suspicion that the pilot who held the PLEX purposefully used a weak ship and a ganking area? Possible revenge? Betrayal to join the other corp? Who knows, it just seems unlikely someone would do something that stupid if they had that sort of cargo unless it was for another purpose. (And wouldn't take make a nice twist?)
How sweet the irony.

It's a tactic used before. If you can't destroy the fortress that holds a special secret super weapon or item, you raid the fortress and steal the item. Then you can just leave it out in the open for some bloodthirsty barbarian to come along and do the job for you. You lose one tiny little ship which you probably had insurance on anyway. Not to mention the part where you can look all innocent with plausible deniability.

But last month the company made some changes to PLEX, making it an actual in-game item that can be transported as cargo.

And that's when I guessed the ending. That kind of blows. I mean, $1295? Damn.

EVE is so ridiculously hardcore...

They have to treat their Corps like actual businesses to keep them alive.

Also, who the hell left 74 PLEXes on a single ship without an escort in low-sec space? There are few more risky things to do in the entire game...

So basically a griefer can now directly attack your playtime? That's a fucking retarded concept.
I have to agree, this is ridiculous. If the owner of that PLEX or Isk or space dollars or whatever keeps playing after this, then he's a shoe-in for the Darwin Awards.
its just in game money used to buy playtime
You have no idea how valuable those items were in-game, don't you?

I can't even imagine what I would do if I watched $1300 go up in a puff of smoke. I...wow. Damn. I'm fairly certain a horrible noise, to begin with, but then...? I just...I don't know. That's almost as much as a paycheck. To watch it evaporate into digital fog, I can't...damn. *shakes head slowly & walks away*

Are hey going to be getting their money back for that?
Why should they?
Because EVE isn't Vegas, losing $1295is a few minutes isn't what you sign up to do.
Nope, but no rule was broken, no system was exploited, and no player cheated or did anything outside of the rules of the system. The lose was caused by a player making a stupid decision with a valuable in game item.

If I undock with my Freighter in Jita while war-dec'ed and get destroyed with a hold full of T2 Battleship, losing billions of ISK in the process, they wouldn't refund me. It is the exact same thing here. Both can be directly converted to real world money, so not even saying that the PLEX has real world value is a valid excuse.

I'm so lost on what you just tried to say, something tells me I need to play the game before commenting anymore on it.

Basically, this dude (apparently the leader of an Alliance) headed to a space port alone, in a common or garden spaceship, in an area notorious for folks attacking and blowing up spaceships, with 73 months worth of game time in the hold. I understand the reason is because that particular space port was paying slightly more for the game time (emphisis on the "slightly", apparently less than 0.5%). Two folks in proper battleships spotted him, scanned him, realised he was a) their enemy, whom their Alliance was at war with and b) had a hell of a lot of in-game money equivilant on that ship, and proceded to blow him up. The Random Number God decreed that the game time stack would be destroyed, and so 22 billion's worth of in-game money equivilant got blown up.

As I understand it, the game time was bought by that Alliance leader using in-game currency, as such no-one other than that Alliance leader lost out, and that while CCP now has $1,300 worth of game time they don't have to honour, I don't think anyone lost actual physical greenbacks over this. Just that his Alliance will probably break up faster than you can say "iceberg". (Apparently, he's blown their entire in-game bank account over this)

"From the Department of Not Too Smooth"

"an apparent plan to swipe"

Are you fucking shitting me?

You blow something up, the drop is random. The fact of the matter is, THEY BLEW IT UP! If it drops, awesome! If it doesn't, bugger, but hey! Their loss, not mine! I mean, sure, highsec gankers expect a better return than their losses, but the glory they gained and anguish they caused mean they win regardless.

Now if only a kessy carrying several thousand in PLEX's came 0.0 way...

Ah ok, still something tells me I'm going to have to play the game at some point, feels like I'm missing out on killing pirates.
