Ever break your character's "morality code?"

In most games that have a morality system, I usually go with the "good" character choices for my first playthrough. However, there are times when I'm sorely tempted to indulge in some dark side points/renegade points/negative karma etc. This usually happens when interacting with NPCs that are, quite simply, total douchebags.

For example, In Fallout 3 the first instance of breaking my character's morality code was when
I crossed paths with Daniel Agincourt, Project Purity's engineer. I tried to be friendly, but all he did was constantly insult me because he held a grudge against Dad. After one insult too many, I whipped out my combat shotgun and blew his head off.

Later on, my second foray into negative karma took place when
escaping from the Enclave base. I ran across one of Project Purity's scientists who was captured by the Enclave, but she offered to work for them when she saw the advanced tech they used. I felt someone who readily changes their allegiance just because of some gadgets has a weak moral compass, so I told her she had betrayed Dad and Dr. Li's vision for Project Purity. Her response:

"Yeah, I guess I did. Big whoop. What are you going to do, kill me?"

In a way this calm, pitiless response seemed more despicable to me than Daniel's emotionally charged insults. I must say, beating her to a pulp with spiked knuckles was particularly satisfying.

Anyone else have instances in games like these where you try to be good, but the temptation to just go nuts and start blowing annoying NPC heads off is too much to pass up sometimes? Alternately, if your goal is to be evil, have you ever taken pity on someone and risked your bad reputation to do something good for a change?

Yes playing dragon age origins, i was playing as a mage and decided to be evil, learn blood magic and kill people for the fun of it. In fact i nearly killed my entire party. but normally i'm a man of morals

I'm the same as you really, I always play the pure 'good' character. However I hate it when on certain games - especially Fallout 3 - characters are rude to you, insult you or challenge you for no good reason.

I'm sorry but if I just blasted my way through 50 super mutants to get here and your going to insult me I'm just going to kill you. Manners cost nothing after all ^ ^

I killed a dude once in Arkham Asylum. It felt horrible.

That day, I most certainly was NOT the goddamn Batman...

In mass effect 2 I've been playing a paragon, yet I ALWAYS end up punching the news reporter. Not a major thing but it makes me laugh nonetheless.

Oh god, yes.

Fallout New Vegas had quite a few of them. I was gunning for a totally Good-Karma Sniper character...

But then I ran across the head Scientist guy at the Solar Power station, and his UTTER ineptitude enraged me to the point of spitting curses at the screen IRL. Plus my dad told me his Scientist coat was a pretty neat Skill Buffing item... So I yanked out my Gladius Machete and sliced him up a treat. Irony of Ironies, I didn't actually get any bad karma from it o_O

And then later...

I ran into Mr. House, and even though I could have left well enough alone, I felt it necessary to ruin his day for trying to kill me... and cracked open his Cryo-Tube, and DIDN'T right out kill him. So by doing so, I left him to die slowly, tortuously, rotting alive like the 200-year old corpse he was. Total Karma Drop all over from that one...

In Starwars The Phantom Menace on PS1, there wasn't really a morality system. But if you killed enough NPC's you couldn't finish the game. Like on Tatooine if you kill all the people around there, Anikin refuses to go with you, calling you a murderer etc.

But I did kill his mum too, so he has a reason.

Oh my God--

Sticky from Fallout 3.

The annoying guy in Little Lamplight that wants you to escort his annoying ass to Big Town for no reward?

Fuck him. Fuck him with a rusty wrench.

Morality? What's that?

Yeah I cross the line. Like when playing a renegade Shepard, I will act nice towards the crew member I'm romancing. Or if playing a paragon Shepard I will act like an ass towards Udina, Miranda, and 'The illusive Man' because I just don't like them.

Fallout: new Vegas.
I was clearing the lower corridors of a science research building of some sort when i was tasked with getting a friendly goul out of his hidey-room. after trying to talk him out if it for a while I decided to clear the problem all together by turning him into a pile of steamy goo with my plasma rifle.

I usually have high karma but he was to much.

Being pure good the whole way through isn't very realistic. I struggle to see how anyone in the Fallout universe would be a saint the whole way through - without acting morally grey or perhaps downright evil. An evil surroundings brings out evil in people, so I think that your character killing someone because they are insulted makes a lot of sense.

I sincerely hope you find this funny and not more annoying:

95% of my characters are evil, so killing annoying dudes is like my morning coffee. Usually the decision is either to slaughter now or cause long term evil or turn someone to evil. Being good is for saps

Wait, Wait, Wait... You people try to make your charecters a certain way in fallout 3?(/New Vegas)

Never have I done such a thing!...

I play and react to situations as I would if I was actually in the game... Not just a want to be a certain type of person. Heck the only time I haven't followed my code is when there was a creepy building. My instincts told me to run yet I knew I had to go into it for a quest...

...this is one of the reasons I wish more games had an option for nonlethal fighting. There are several people I would have liked to beat unconscious in Fallout 3 and New Vegas, but the only option is to the death...

I think the question isn't "whether you do evil things" but whether you violate the morality you decided on for the character. Like if you're playing pure evil but decide to save some random people because you know the game'll give you a reward.

On my evil Fallout 3 character I had a go at killing everyone I met (when possible). So I get to the Republic of Dave. I aways meet and get to know the people I kill for the hell of it. I get to Rosie decided not to kill her or anyone in the Republic of Dave. I rigged the election in her favor and was one my way.

I really really wanted to open fire on everyone and scatter all the children into the unforgiving wasteland. For her I did not.

Hows that for moral code. I didn't complete the primary goal of my character.

I usually whatever I benefit most from. Naturally this is the bad thing. But every so often instead of having a giant super weapon I do something good. Like actually saving for the battle in Fable III

Well...I usually insert myself into these games, and my profile is this:

I'm a hero, but I am vindictive as hell. You backstab me without a VERY good reason, or you try to murder me, or you attempt to kill a bunch of innocents for some stupid scheme.....You are on my hit list.

That and I am not above fighting dirty to get the job done. (LOOOOVE those renegade moments in Mass Effect 2! :p )
