(provided it doesn't cost money)

HOLY SH*T!

Breaking down barriers Valve. I'll be sure to dust off my 360 copy of the Orange Box in preparation. Don't let me down!

This is exactly what I thought of a few days ago. Since the game uses the same engine on all platforms, it should be able to run the same things. And since PS3 gets Steamworks integrated it should help the availability of mods.

The 360 crowd isn't gonna be pleased to find out such things aren't possible on their console because Microsoft is basically a bunch of dicks. Inb4 everyone blames Valve for it.

I wonder if they could make the co-op campaign cross-platform as well. (The only format of FPS where the gamepad vs. keyboard+mouse issue wouldn't be such a big deal)

OK. I said it before. I have to say it again: Why is Valve so nice to us?
If I remember correctly, Valve is not corporate like EA and Activision, and the guys running the show are as much gamers as the customers.

I could be wrong though.
It helps business and general image. I can imagine people buying copies for both platforms now.
Another thing is that "there is no such thing as a free lunch." [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/view-from-the-road/7655-View-from-the-Road-No-Such-Thing-as-a-Free-Lunch]

The actual meaning of the word "agnostic" doesn't in any way refer to any god.

As it turns out, treating your customers well can be a profitable business practice.

Correct but, in the spirit of reading comprehension...

He means platform agnostic. As in portable...as in works on everything...

The tools will rely on something that is non-portable, I imagine its just because the tools are windows programs or use something like directX. But however they store their level data or scripting stuff, is only specific to the engine.

Makes me happy! If all the PS3 people who made great levels for LittleBigPlanet can be motivated to make great levels for Portal 2 as well, everybody wins.
Clearly not reading this the tools for level making are only on pc though if buy the game on PS3 you get a free copy of it on normal steam.
Are you saying that a PS3 owner can't possibly own a PC as well?

Cool, it'll be refreshing for Modding not to be confined to us PC-ers :)
Well to make the mods, will still have to be done on PC of course =P. But at least now PS3 owners can download and play them.

This is why valve is making a killing and why the steam network spreads like wildfire. Every other publisher like Activision + EA makes you pay for maps, mods ..etc.

Valve releases them for free and gives out modding tools so everyone else can create and mod new content (which keeps games alive). Why is CS original still in the top 5 fps games when it comes to server traffic? Mods + new content despite being almost 12 years old.

Valve has recently been doing a REALLY good job at making us forget about how much we want Episode III.
Hey the moment EVERYBODY forgets about Episode 3, It will come out.
OT: Micro$oft are not going to be happy if "free" is used.
So your saying pretty much never because we can't seem to go one article involving valve without someone mentioning episode 3. =(

OT: I wait for the day that microsoft stops with all its stupid charges on everything in the 360. I only had mine for a while but its seems like after getting it I can only enjoy half of the damn console cause the rest I got to pay.

As long as us 360 people don't have to pay for this whilst others are getting it for free, this is awesome.
If we xbox users have to pay for it it will be microsofts fault. Many devs have complained about the delivery of updates on Live. We should probably start writing letters now. Grats to the ps3 camp on steamworks. I officially envy you.

For the 360 I'd imagine you would download maps much like in Far Cry 2. There would be a list of maps which can be displayed in numerous ways (alphabetical, date of creation, ranking, downloads etc) and all the player has to do is download that map if they want to play it. If you want to join a game with people playing a map that you don't have you would have to download the map and then join, obviously. Ubisoft got it to work fairly well, why can't Valve?

EDIT: No amount of money was ever involved with this process, except buying the game.

Wow.
That is cool. I was only planning on getting the ps3 version because it comes free with the pc version (or vice versa) but I'm impressed. There are very few games that have an ability for user made content, and I can only think of one that builds it into the functioning of the game...on the consoles at least.
UT3 allowed me to download mods to the ps3. Then with the right software you could make your own items/weapons in Borderlands.

Still, I am a little bit worried. After hearing them complain so long about the ps3 architecture, I can't help but wonder if it's really boggled them enough that this will stutter and crash amore than Fallout New Vegas.
a ton of game on PC allows mods... It is the problem of console not game developers.
