"welp, that worlds fucked"

XD indeed it is.

Pretty telling how much better Willy is though, Robotnic only had one Machine capable of standing against Willy's forces, which leads me to think Metal Sonic was a fluke.

The thing is that a lot of Wily's robot's incorporate some form of defense rather than being a simple robot that can be taken out by a small rodent bouncing off its head. That and his creations have much more diversity with their powers (and their powers would be MUCH more powerful than anything that Robotnik ever came up with).

The thing is, though, that Dr. Wily built Zero, and I'd imagine that Zero could take out Metal Sonic. :p

Robotnik is depicted in the thumbnail and Eggman is mentioned.

Is this heresy towards my childhood or cognitive dissonance?

He's always been Eggman.

It's from sonic 2 I think.

Do Eggman's robots really suck that badly? You'd think the one that can teleport would do better.

I would say that all of Eggman's robots DO suck that badly. Think about it: the majority of them get destroyed if a small blue rodent jumps on their head. Dr. Wily has indestructible hard-hats that are capable of deflecting powered shots from Megaman, same with Snipe Joe's shields. Not to mention the specialized attacks of the Robot Masters could absolutely destroy any of Robotnik's robots because they're main-bosses while, for the most part, Robotnik always uses some attachment to his hovercraft to become the main boss of the levels himself. He's had some pretty powerful ones, but the drawback is that only one can be equipped at a time.

His most powerful creations were the robot Sonics, even so: they only require a few bops from a small blue rodent in order to destroy them.

That's why I say Zero (Wily's greatest robot...I don't know why they thought Bass was) could defeat Metal Sonic. If Sonic can do it, there's no reason Zero wouldn't be able to. :p

Yeah, pretty much what I came here to say. Zero would destroy everything in his path, I'm pretty sure he's fought worse. Basically everything from the X series would dominate this fight. Those games were brutal. Sigma really knew how to lay down the pain.

At least according to one of the Mega Man cartoon series, the bots from the MMX series were actually made of a super futuristic metal that was incredibly more durable than anything in Wily's time. There was a cross-over where Vile and Spark Mandrill go back in time to collect a resource that's no longer available in the future. Standard Mega Man literally can't do anything against them, his blasts are absolutely useless. So yeah, I think it's canon that all the bots in the X series were worlds above everything in the standard MM series, and they'd make an even bigger joke of everything that Robotnik ever cooked up.

In Japan, yes, and as of Sonic Adventure, pretty much everywhere in the console spectrum. I grew up with the incarnation that was voiced by Jim Cummings, however, specifically the one for the cartoon fans tend to refer to as "SatAM" - and that version was called Julian "Ivo" Robotnik.

The games and comics tend to have divergent canons that intersect and split apart again and again. The current consensus in the Archie comics, which I also used to read, is that his real name is Julian Kintobor, while Eggman is a more recent moniker he only truly acknowledges in the one or two instances where Sonic managed to drive him utterly insane with anger.

Considering how the Sonic universe tends to meld and reject elements from the Archie comics and Yuji Naka's source material, I think it's generally safer to agree that both statements are correct.

He's Eggman for most of his video game roles (except maybe for Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, where the game itself is named as such) and alternately Robotnik or Eggman depending on the general mood of the current comics run.

His SatAM appearance, however, is definitely over and done with. Even when he answers to Robotnik, he still looks like the Eggman of more recent years.

I remember this fight. One of the best they ever did. And the ending is perfect.

Also, while Zero is heavily implied to have been built by Wily, that is also done in the future. His attempt to build a bot to defeat Megaman, but Zero was not unleashed during the days of the Blue Bomber. Therefore, there is no reason for Death Battle to use him in this fight. So, yes, Bass is Wily's best bot.

The Archie comics were actually based on Sonic SatAM. It was not a continuation of the series, though. The Archie team were huge fans of the show which is why they used it. And they did their best to marry the games and the show in their own universe. Which is why characters like Knuckles and Amy appear, as well as original characters that only appeared in the comics.

The show itself is actually based on the Sega of America ideas for Sonic. There are a few games they made which you can see those ideas in. Such as Sonic Spinball. Any game Sega of America made featured, at least somewhat, characters like Sally, Bunny, and Rotor. I think Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine was made by Sega of America, but I can't say for certain.

And the main body of Sega pretty much ignores all those ideas. Sally, Rotor, and others don't exist in the main Sonic franchise.

Just offering this as a clarification.

Good points!
You're right. The comics mostly adhere to vestigial elements from Sega of America. That's when they don't wildly veer off into pastiches or references to everything from Film Noir to Marvel canon or DC Comics supervillains. Mammoth Mogul, for instance, is more or less an anthro-ification of Vandal Savage with elements of Wilson Fisk/The Kingpin thrown, more recently.
