Are these being shown out of order? I thought this one was supposed to be Vegeta vs somebody.

I've seen a few of these before, never really liked them for being mostly arbitrary conclusion.

This one especially so.

Good one. My theory that unlikely one always wins expect when there is ScrewAttack favorite (which in this case was Mario) was disproven.

To quote Yahtzee: "If it's a battle between two people who primarily attack by jumping on things, my money's on the one with the spikes."

Yes, arbitrary indeed, because the ending shows that the whole decision is based on speed, which means the entire battle from the start was pointless because if speed was the factor, than Sonic would have cut Mario in half before he got a chance to use a power up.

In this battle, I considered speed a minimal factor. It was also arbitrary because they made it out to be that Mario becomes slow or stunned when he loses a power-up like it showed with the giant-shroom, which isn't the case. If anything, he becomes invincible for a few seconds after losing power-up and nothing else is effected.

Really, from what I've seen of this series, it is based off the majority favorite of Screw Attack or they let the side that has the most volatile fan-base win. Volatile point is especially shown in the Starscream vs. Rainbow Dash fight. Logically, Starscream wins, they were just scared of the Pony fandom getting enraged that one of their precious ponies was torn/blown to bits. I'm not a fan of or even like either side, I just know logically the pony would have been smashed to bloody bits(which frankly would have been more entertaining).

How was Mario the unlikely one. Your theory of the unlikely one winning is proven because Sonic was the unlikely one.

Mario had more powers/skills, especially more that made him invincible. The only thing Sonic had was speed, which is a minimal point when considering a fight with super human powers and skills.

When all points are added up, logically, Mario wins. Considering what I said in my first part of the comment, either Sonic is a Screw Attack favorite, or they felt there would be more backlash form Sonic fans if he lost. I think it could be the second one, because I've seen the deep dark corners of the Sonic fandom, it is way weirder or darker than anything Mario fans have produced. Many seem cult-like devoted to Sonic.

Ehm... he wasn't. As I said he was ScrewAttack favorite so according to what I said he ought to have won. I knew ScrewAttack as huge Nintendo fans so this result surprised me. But if they weren't, Sonic is slightly less known character (unlikely) and my theory would stand.

And now I also see that I mistype "except" into "expect" which migh have caused some confusion.

I like how the comments are about how much bullshit it is for Sonic to win against Mario just because "speed is a minimal factor". I mean acceleration is a crucial part of measuring force but whatever.

Having been a fan of Death Battle since it first came out, you really just gotta ignore the comments. Fans of the character who died will always try and find some stupid reason for why they should have won.

Also, for those that didn't know, the actual battle scene means jack shit as to who wins the battle - they determine the winner beforehand based on their research, and then proceed to make a battle while incorporating as much stuff as they can.

They really should put some of the more recent Death Battles up on the website - they do a better job at explaining why a certain character won imo.

I can see your point, though... I wasn't really rooting for either side to win in the long run because all I wanted a see was a death battle between two characters that I like... Despite their logic of actually winning can still be debated (like debating over if Wolverine could take on the Hulk, even after watching the movie and that one particular episode), it's still based on simple speculation that could be backed up with the logic behind each character's overall stats...

I never thought the death battles would be based on favorites or which side would receive the least amount of [fan] backlash, but like I said on your previous quote, I can see your point... Mario does have the skills to take on Sonic and basically kill him given both their general skill sets... I mean, Mario can find ways to adapt to Sonic's speed and basically pull off a Spike Spiegel as a means to make it Sonic's weakness... Add that with Sonic's personality and Mario's already a slight advantage against Sonic...

Still, both sides have a chance to beat either side, given the circumstances... So, it shouldn't matter who wins in these death battles, since even to this day they can still be debated and countered... (It might still be debated if these battles had any sort of official canon confirmed by the creators of the characters, themselves...)

I can honestly say that, while I may have been upset if "my character" lost, for a day or two, I come to terms with it pretty quickly. One thing they have always done well is explain their reasoning. And generally, I can at the least understand their reasoning. For example, the worst one for me is Goku versus Superman (though Cloud versus Link is a close second). And while I feel some things were a bit off, I can say that I understand the result. Going by what they gave, and even a comment they made, I can accept the result.

In this case, they basically said that Sonic and Mario's powerup's don't make much difference in the end. And based solely on their basic abilities, Sonic would win. Those claiming speed is a minor factor seem to be forgetting that Sonic can run at Mach speeds. No matter how fast Mario may be as a giant or with flight, I doubt he can break the sound barrier.

And like you said, the actual battle is meaningless. It's just a show. A pageant. Nothing but eye candy.

Didn't we already see this one?

I could swear we have seen this before.

Captcha: "Which one is biggest?" Well, obviously the one who doesn't shrink the first time he takes a hit.

That makes sense.

Personally, I'm a big fan of MlP: and wasn't old enough in the 90s to really follow transformers.

But yeah... the hasbro death battle you just describes sounds... stupid.

Even I know starscream is a giant war veteran, second-in-command of the galaxy's greatest army of evil, armed to the teeth with weapons designed for fighting *other* war veterans; he's a literal war machine.

Rainbowdash, while fast, athletic, and skilled, is a government employed weather person, and a hobbyist athlete.

Further cementing my opinion of this show as... kind of dumb.

Sonic wins, huh, didn't expect that. Have to say I can't disagree though.
On basic abilities, Sonic has the advantage, and even with power ups, it stands to reason that Sonic could avoid just about everything Mario could throw at him.

Though at the end of the day, they're both heroes. They would never kill each other, or leave one another to drown.

Long story short, even the transformer fans doubt starscream would win. Why? The simple reason that g1 starscream sucks at nearly everything he does.

I think they gave Mario way too much credit. Now, it needs to be said that power does NOT equal coolness. If you think Mario is cooler, good on you. You have a fair point. But Bruce Lee would lose in a battle against the weakest character in DBZ, and Bruce Lee is still cooler. Who would win in a fight has NOTHING to do with who is better.

First off, everything that Mario can do can be countered by Sonic moving in any direction. There is literally no scenario in which Sonic would have to fight Mario while he has a temporary powerup. And do you really think that Mario in his large form can travel hundreds of miles an hour? No, they are severely overestimating Mario while underestimating Sonic.

Meanwhile, Sonics speed means that he can bring the fight to Mario only when he has the absolute best powerups. Like, for example, SONICS invincibility powerup. Overlooking invincibility is kind of a serious omission.

Next, it appears that both characters have 1 life. Thats fine. But they completely forgot that a hit on Mario either kills or severely cripples him. While a hit on Sonic means he loses his rings...BUT he can just get them right back, and can stay alive indefinitely against Mario as long as he keeps a hold of one of his rings (Not to mention that Sonic has a short period of invincibility after losing rings) Even if Sonic didn't brutally outclass Mario in raw force, he could easilly pull a rope a dope by constantly recovering at least 1 ring. I recall some boss fights where Sonic easilly took 10 times the punishment as Mario ever could.

Oh, and remember trying to jump on spikey enemies in Mario? Never went well. Sonic is as spikey as they get, so realistically, all Sonic has to do is Jump or start a spin dash, and Mario should lose a powerup or die the moment he tries to hit Sonic. Meanwhile, Sonic is a giant spikey, HOMEING ball of death. He is faster, more manueverable, homes in on enemies, and kills Mario in all 360 degrees. Mario can hit Sonic if he hits directly on his head with his feet, assuming sonic isn''t in a position that he probably spends over 90% of his time in battle as.

Oh, and Sonic has taking out GIANT ROBOTS bigger then large Mario with 8 hits in NORMAL mode. Sonic isn't THAT useless underwater, and he can certainly build up enough speed even there to outrun Mario, plus he should be able to find Air bubbles.

This isn't Criticizing the video: The idea of these 2 fighting is absurd from the get go, and they made the battle interesting. But to make the battle interesting, they had to ignore just how doomed Mario was, and give him a huge amount of favor bias. Which again, thats fine, good video. But the idea that they prefered Sonic and that Mario should have actually won is ridiculous. I mean..Mario fights Mushrooms, Sonic fights GIANT ROBOTS. No contest.
