You know, he IS right. I use facebook myself and it is preposterous to think that we just hand over this stuff to a stranger.

He may be a jackass, but as least he's an honest Jackass.

I still think Facebook is amazingly useful, I use it to keep in touch with all my friends and family. It's not that bad, just use the privacy settings and don't write anything you don't want people to know about you.

The worst I've experienced is some slutty chicks asking me to meet them randomly.

Well, technically no. I mean, you could delete everything off your profile, but Facebook itself would still have whatever information you used to sign up.

Please think about that for a while.
You know I may not like MySpace or Facebook or any of that stuff, but he is my new favorite CEO. I wouldn't trust him for anything, but at least he is honest about it.

Honestly? It sounds like something I'd say.

But, hey, let's take a joke out of context to fit in on the "let's bash Facebook" wagon.

There were a few services that could delete all your facebook information, though I believe there have since been precautions against most of the "facebook suicide" exploits.

Sadly, that means fuck all. Facebook are notorious for holding your personal info, even if you've deleted it.
Yup. Ain't that hard to backup all that data in a separate server. And it ain't just personal accounts, either. There are a lot of companies that use Facebook for easy exposure. 'Tis to laugh.
Glad I never got into that mess.

Might be a good time to print out the TOS and such and have a chat with your lawyers, Facebook users.

granted, but there are processes by which you are able to formally and finally delete your profile.

That said, I can't do that :\

Yes, here they are:

http://www.wikihow.com/Permanently-Delete-a-Facebook-Account

Difficult enough.

In the meantime, I'd just avoid putting anything personal at all up there.
unfortunately, in order to be able to modify the LRR facebook page, I have to keep my account. :\

But I'm certainly not inclined to leave everything up that is. Man I wish Facebook was still a social network and photosharing service, and not pure evil in a can.

-m
Well from how I read this article, it was already pure evil in a can. And I wouldn't put complete faith in that Permanent Delete option. Marky Mark Zurkerburg's attitude would lead me to believe he has the right to retain a lot of information.
Let me reiterate: Take the time to go over the TOS and other legal gobbledegook for Facebook with a microscope. That's not only rules for you but rules for Facebook as well.
It's an ocean of scum and villainy out there, and the biggest fish wins. Be the bigger fish.

You can't delete it.
They still keep it on their servers, no user data has ever been deleted from facebook.
When you quit your account, you'll notice that you can always restore it with a single click.
And suddenly all the information and details are there again.
It's nice that alot of the smarter facebook users now stop using facebook, atleast they don't hand over new information via updates.
Edit: seems like that has been said 5000 times aleady, sorry^^

Yeah... I knew about this sort of bullshit when I signed up... but... its still a good way to keep in touch with friends (met them in real life long before I ever got a facebook account) that live thousands of miles away now.

Good thing I never really post that much info on my profile anyway.
Hey, as long as some (like a few of my mates are) are not stupid enough to add addresses and telephone numbers, or dare to meet up with people they dont know, who is bothered? If we are stupid enough to trust this site to add these kind of personal details then its our own fault. Granted IP addresses can be tracked, but that can happen on any site including this one. Either way, its up to us to keep ourselves safe...

If anyone makes a Facebook, they'd be idiots if they expected privacy.

What's an SNS number?
I agree, I have a facebook but would never DREAM of putting anything private, personal, or something that could in any way come back to bite me.

Oh joy, here come all the haters of social networking.

If those that don't have a Facebook, Myspace, etc. honestly don't think someone already has enough information to make your life miserable, you're sadly naive. I hate it when people use the excuse of "privacy" as a legitimate reason to condemn the use of social networking. Communication is evolving, might as well embrace it whilst we still have free will.

While it is troubling that a person is so loose with people's privacy, something that I find disgusting. It is mostly your choice what you put on facebook, both the public and private things... just remember to not put stupid shit on it (which is simplier said than done, I suppose).

EDIT: What I find amusing is that this article is using a private conversation (I assume) to complain about this guy's looseness with people's privacy.

And we can share this story on Facebook even

I know people already mentioned that but still, it's like a Rubik's Cube of irony in here.

Never joined the online stalker's yellowpages er, social profiling sites.
Then again, I'm trained as a network security technician. This shit can be bad juju for your company, let me tell you.

Zuckerman's honesty may demonize him in the eyes of his "trusted" userbase, but to me he's just stating the obvious.
