Recently i decided to replay Fallout 1 and 2 but when i play them the intro cinematic and certain parts of the game are pixelated with pretty rainbow colors.

I had this problem too, never did find a solution. There was supposed to be a hi-res patch, but I never got it working.

Hmmm... I recall having this problem as well... can't remember how I fixed it (it's been YEARS). Check your video drivers compatibility, and also the game's display settings. These are some pretty old PC games after all. They weren't the most reliable of things to install a game on even when they were new.

All I need to do is restart the game when this happens, I have this issue too but its a simple fix for me.

Hm, you know, I'm not sure. I'm gonna guess yes, but if they don't, you only need remove STEAM from your executable, then patch it (you can do this by cracking, but I've probably said too much already).

I had the same problem although in my case Fallout 1 was mostly fine but Fallout 2 was unplayable. Isn't it just because modern computers are incompatible with old games? I've encountered the rainbow of doom in plenty of 90s PC games when I play them on my laptop such as one of my favourite games of all time, Titanic: Adventure out of time.

for fallout 2...
It is said in the steam news of Fallout 2 on your library page. It fixes all color and other known issues with new computers also it enables you to use high resolution and 32bit colors.

Go get it.

For Fallout 1, don't know. Maybe a sandbox computer with Win98 or something, maybe you should go and try finding a Fallout community site or the steam forums for answer.

Shame you didn't pick up the GOG copies of it; they don't have this issue. That said the patches that people are linking do work as I used them when I installed my old retail copy a year or two back.

Now that you mention it, I think that's how I 'fixed' my issue.

I tried to get my old discs to run, had several issues, then gave up and bought them off of GOG. lol

Best solution ever, non DRM games, restored to run on old systems, cheap as fuck; now excuse while I go wank off to the great games on that site

I've got a special box of tissues just for that place. You can borrow some if you want.

Man, the low prices alone get me randy.

Try this:

Works for me when I try to play Fallout and Fallout 2. Gets rid of all the pretty rainbow colours. This is assuming that you're on Windows 7 of course.

I feel for you man, I had the same problem too, it was pretty widespread so just type in like "fallout graphic glitch" and you should find pages and pages with possible solutions. I remember getting it to work most of the time but the problem occasionally popped back up, I was not happy but it was worth it, I really like those games, especially the first one.

I found alt-tabbing to windows then back into the game cleared it up. I've had a few games do it to me over the years.

GUYS. I WILL SOLVE ALL OF YOUR PROBLEMS.

It's annoying as hell, I know. I had this same problem with Age of Empires. I know this is going to sound like a troll post, but I swear I am serious. I found that ending the "explorer.exe" process to disable visual themes and running the game through the task manager made it work. Apparently it's an issue with some sort of visual theme in Vista and 7. Run explorer.exe again afterwards to get your desktop back and you're good to go.
