Only if they did something about the art, I enjoyed Chrono Trigger, but that damn art is just...I hate DBZ and all the art for Chrono Trigger and DQ is like looking at hundreds of Gokus.
The Toriyama art is just for the models. The actual sprites are pretty much par-for-the-course 16-bit sprites, about 1.5 times taller than powered-up SMW Mario. Also, the story is fscking epic. If you pass this up because the guy who did the character concepts introduced us to Shouting Blond Man Style Martial Arts, you're doing yourself a great disservice. Anything involving Chrono Trigger should be pretty awesome. I'm not saying that it is impossible for this to suck (I've heard the horror stories of Chrono Cross), but I'm excited.

I can't see this going anywhere. First of all I severely doubt square would allow Obsidian to remake Chrono Trigger. Second, I can't imagine that this remake would be any good, it just wouldn't fit the mold that western RPGs possoss.
While he is correct that Crono did have some elements that could be compared to Western RPGs these elements simply did not consist of a large enough part of the game. Of course if they keep the mostly Japanese aspects of the game and mearly build on the more non linaer aspects it may be an provide an intersting new prospective on the orignal.

And to chime in on the art style debate, I feel that the Dragon ball influnced art stlye is too large apart of the feel of the game to be desposed of. Which may be yet another reason why this remake would not work, as I can't imgine Obsidian keeping the orignal art in a way that would not look completly terrible.

Why do I have a really bad feeling about this. I'll prolly still buy it because I liked Chrono Trigger so much but..

Gotta agree here. I loved me some CT but I've always found that artists style to be extremely offputting. I would imagine if the game came out now and you could actually see that art style portrayed "properly" in game instead of just as a collection of pixels, I might pass the game over entirely.

Some things are better left alone...

Great RPGs like Chrono Trigger are among them. The recent DS remake/re-release of CT was about as much tampering with this classic as can be allowed.

I'm sorry Obsidian, but there is no reason for you to touch Chrono Trigger. Please, please stay away, far far away.
I second this and raise 3 extra "please" and a "far".

"westernize" The fact they had an answer to that is reason enough I don't want them touching Chrono Cross, I don't care how badly I want a remake I don't want these baboons doing it, especially if their sole purpose is to westernize it.

Hmmmmm.

Not sure if want.

It has potential to be cool but, i don't want a WRPG CT.
JRPG was just fine.

I third(?) this and say that people WILL get hurt if they go through with this. By hurt I mean murdered.

Hmmm I wouldn't mind seeing Ayla in fancy new up to date graphics. Since it'll be half japanese jiggle physics are going to pretty high up on the list of important things not to cut.

I know I'm not the only one thinking that.

I support just about everyone in this thread on the fact that Chrono Trigger, itself should never be touched by Obsidian. However if Obsidian only wants to use the world at play, and create an entirely new game with similar elements to ChronoTrigger, I have no problems with that. So long as they don't name it something stupid like "ChronoTrigger2: Back to the Future". It would need it's own name. Maybe it can be like ChronoCross was, using the Chrono name and music, but giving itself its own plot (provided it isn't taken off of a text adventure this time.)

I think Westernizing something which is essentially a mix between Final Fantasy and DBZ would not turn out well.
This... Hell westernizing ANYTHNG would be a bad idea.
Hell the only good mordern WRPG is Dragon age: Origins.

I would like to see what western developers would do to "improve" CT, out of curiosity, but beforehand I suspect it would suck.

See, the focus of most JRPGs is having, if not realistic, at least memorable and charismatic characters. They put a lot of emotion in their characters. The majority of Western RPGs focus too much on making "plausible" fantasy worlds, "plausible" interactions, "plausible" characters. It's all about realism, even when they're dealing with a fantastic setting. Although there are exceptions, most Western RPGs are more like "fantasy world simulator" than "fantasy story". Characters are usually very generic, too.

Even being "silent", Chrono evokes some charisma. See, he's a goodwilled adventurer. No way around that. Even if he doesn't speak the lines, you can imagine he doing so by the reaction of his interlocutors. Western RPGs usually have silent main characters, but they have this habit of letting you choose all the dialogues (in favor of "immesion" and "intractivity", and despite plot coherence and depth), making the character's personality a mess (as most of the choices are pretty much generic and the fact that you can choose them randomly at any time and disregard previous choices when making new ones makes the main characters' personality look pretty random at times).

Chrono is silent, but you can't make him a jerk. He's always the typical good guy. He may be nasty sometimes (eating food from others in the festival), but it's not something totally incoherent with the way he shows himself in the plot.

Even with the multiple endings, CT never tried too hard to give players "absolute freedom". It tried to be a great story, regardless of which ending you got. I'd like to see how an western RPG developer would deal with that.

As much as I think they are a great company I don't want to see this, It's a great game already and anything they do to it would probably make it worse.
