The game's on the disc, there isn't a download unless you bought it off the steam store, or if you're downloading a patch.

And once you have it on your system you can make as many backups as you want (they will however still be bound to your account).

Oh well, different opinions I think Steam is the best of the worst, and I won't try to change your opinion about it, as it is yours alone =P
Can't argue with that.
GFWL is worse.

I already have over 100 titles on my steam account thanks to all of the awesome weekend deals. I have over a dozen I haven't even played yet due to no time.(because Dragon Age: Origins demands I need a third playthrough)

Never had any trouble with GFWL, but I've had trouble with Steam.

That said, both are shit and I'd rather not have either.

Yuck, I'm never been a fan of Steam. I consider it a real vague annoying attempt to just slow down my comp.

I was hoping this could go to Impulse if you had to find a digital distributor. Oh well, whatever, I'll still probably play this on my console.

Does this mean that (a) I can buy the game on the service I already use for all things PC gaming, and (b) no fucking around with the atrocious GFWL?

In the words of Three Dog, "if they've got the caps and you've got the space it's a win-win, right?"

Its likely that a large proportion of Pc gamers already have Steam installed, wether though choice or another game requiring it. Some friends of mine barely game on anything, yet have steam just for a few indie titles.
I dont see this having any major impact, though there are some die hard steam haters out there.

Well, this game just keeps looking better and better! Dropping the GFWL in favor of steam? Yes! I already use steam for about half my games, and my (admittedly two-years-old-now)monster of a machine never has any slowdown issues with steam but does have a bunch of hurdles with GFWL, and of course if you can't log into GFWL, you can't load the saves you made while it was running. And, GFWL was incompatible with the FO3 Script extender, although steam never gave me any grief for any of the mods and mod tools I installed in FO3 (New Vegas uses the same engine, right?).

Nah, I got FO3 on steam (which still required the use of GFWL as well), and Steam never had problems with any of the many, many, many many many (just throw in another dozen many's in there) mods I installed. Any mod that used the FO3 Script Extender, however, was automatically incompatible with GFWL.

Not at all, I have a quite a few games I have bought though stema that have a large modding community. Mount and Blade is Steam only and that is incredibly easy to mod, the only thing that should change is the file path.

I got Fallout 3 and the first time I saw "GFWL" in the notes about a mod I thought it stood for God Forsaken Windows Live. Then I realized wait... that means Games For Windows Live.

Go Steam!

Whilst I do see this argument, PC gamers without Steam are likely becoming a minority. Half-Life 2, Portal, TF2, MW2, L4D... The list goes on.
All but MW2 are Valve games, and since Valve owns Steam... yeah.
Actually...All Sega games are being released exclusively on Steam. Total War, Alien Vs Predator and Football Manager. Civilization 5 is also shipping with Steamworks. F.E.A.R. 2 also.
It's already a big slice of the PC community.

I dunno about this... Fallout 3's patched F***ed more than they fixed, and steam forces autopatching...

its like that it doesnt need gfwl anymore altho kinda sucks for other online retailers
I hope dow 2 does this at some point, I mean it already needs steam but getting rid of gfwl would really kick ass
GFWL is the only thing keeping me from buying that game. I want it so much!
you should have got the gold edition on steam last week, it was only 20 bucks and while gfwl is a pain it doesnt kill the enjoyment of the game or even online play

Which is something I don't like. There needs to be some competition. More competition = better for consumers.

you can turn off autopatching by rightclicking on the title in your library, hitting properties, going to the 'updates' tab, and switching the box below "Automatic Updates" from "Always keep this game up to date" to "Do not automatically update this game".

That's the one reason I kinda like Impulse more, because it tells you you have an update available for a game and you have to tell it to update- kept a bunch of mods working for SOaSE because of that.

Most of my games are on steam, though.

Believe it I'm with you. There's Stardock, but they don't have the manpower or the name to compete with Valve, for now. On the other hand I like having all these games under Steam. Makes me warm and fuzzy for some reason.

Well, I can't say I'm happy about this, but since I usually have Steam installed anyway...

Actually, online ativation still stinks, and so does running Steam in the background.

I wasn't really bothered by the last system they used and this will probably annoy me more once they use it on a game I care more about.
