This should be in Game Discussion.

Now that that statement is out of the way, I disagree! It'd be better on whatever id Software comes up with next.

Except that the Source Engine is pretty dated. No, I'd rather have Bethesda's new engine, whatever that may be.

well first of all it would be really weird playing it... like most the game consists of picking up stuff and placing it somewhere else.
beside that fallout is using a dialogue system instead of monologues (or that im just a prick who doesn't understand engines).

The source engine is just Valve saying "Look we built physics". The graphics on it looked dated at the time of release let alone now and the games currently available on it do not inspire me in the least. It's just a physics simulator.

I want the next engine from Bethesda and their studios.

Lots of time and/or money go into taking what looks and works great and transferring it into a real-time engine.
Like Maya/Softimage/Photoshop into Source
or Maya/Softimage/Photoshop into Gamebryo
or Maya/Softimage/Photoshop into CryEngine 2
or Maya/Softimage/Photoshop into Jade
or Maya/Softimage/Photoshop into Unreal
or Source to Maya/Softimage/Photoshop to Gamebryo, which is what you're asking for.

Portal 2 trailers were rendered in Cinematic variants of the latest in-house version of Source. If those trailers can compete with other to-date trailers, I don't think that it's entirely obsolete yet. Also, Almost all game engines which operate physics, use the same plugin Source has: HAVOK reactor. A game engine does far more than think about physics. It has to do textures, models, animation, map interaction, model/map/object/prop hull interaction, artificial intelligence, and thats everything not including the rendering pipeline. (Which lots of people know better as "The Numbers", "Science" and "Graphics")

If it used the Source 2011 engine I'd say yes.
The gamebryo engine that Fallout uses is still very good though, albeit a few problems, but then nothing is perfect.

It doesn't matter how old an engine is, most 3d engines are just as capable as new ones, just the new one would be better optimized and the games made with it would have a wider array of system resources to work with. A newer engine will also have spiffy new features, like different lighting options, and... well that's about it.

Let me show you an example.
Can you tell which is from the Source 2009 engine and the Gold Source (Half Life 1) engine?
Without looking at the pictures name.

I think the top is Source 2009. The lighting around the pit in the middle looks slightly better.

Maybe it's because I'm not an obsessive Valve Fanboy, but the source engine isn't particularly great. The Unreal engine is pretty much the go-to engine for shooters nowadays.

The examples don't really show the other capabilities of the 09 source engine (such as effects and dynamic shading)

Fallout isn't a shooter, The game would suck on either the source or Unreal engines. Both engines would turn themselves inside out before exploding if they had to render such large open ended environments.
