Bleach? Naruto? Really?

Gotta keep this list away for Suiseiseki, she might blow her top.
YEAH RLY!

What, you mean we need LESS desu? That is unacceptable.

But really, would you expect what are probably the two most popular anime in the US to not be on the list? I was surprised by Kenshin, however, seeing as it's relatively old and doesn't get that much attention.
I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. Doesn't mean I can't be annoyed that those shit stains are still popular despite having outstayed their welcome by 480 episodes or whatever.
Yeah, even by Jump standards those series are running long.

It'd be... peculiar if Japanese nerds liked all things Western. There's really not too much else to say about it.
But the Japanese ARE facinated by the US's random crap.

You know for as much as you can bust on the list at least Pokemon wasn't on that list.

As for some of the comments, some of them make me be embarased to be an anime fan. Seriously Naruto changed your life? My god I like Naruto but jesus if it changed you life it doesn't say much about your life to begin with.

Is the top 10 anime list dominated by current rage or actual quality? Gurren Lagann is fun to watch and the series knows how to end--unlike the ties for 7th place. Really, there are two lists here:

Top Relevant Anime:

1) Gurren Lagann
2) Code Geass
3) Bleach
4) Naruto
5) Fullmetal Alchemist

And Top Anime of the 2000s:

1) Cowboy Bebop
2) FLCL
3) Evangelion
4) Rurouni Kenshin
5) ONE PIECE

It goes against the point of the article, but there is hope for these fans yet. This shows a healthy blend of appreciation for new creations turned out by the industry and a healthy respect for some of the greatest works the genre has put out.

...

OK fine, ONE PIECE isn't exactly in Rurouni Kenshin's weight class for depth, complexity, script writing, or animation frame rate. Or dubbing efforts. Or knowing when to advance the frakking plot. (Not to say RK's filler arc didn't commit atrocities, but at least they waited until after the Kyoto Arc completed.) BUT. ONE PIECE is FUN. The part of me that will forever be 9 years old can't help but bounce gleefully, happy to be following Lufy and hoping one day to be a Pirate King. And it has boobs, but those are for the part of me that's forever 18. And 19. And 20...

Famitsu Asks American Otaku What They Like

Japanese gaming uber-mag Famitsu has polled a group of 800 American otaku about what their favorite things are from the glorious Land of the Rising Sun. The results are not surprising.

You know, we here in the West often like to look over at our friends in Japan, scratch our heads, and go "...what the hell are you guys doing over there?" Whether it's giving Pokemon Platinum an entirely different meaning [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/92322-Japan-Finishes-Life-Size-Gundam], we tend to treat things like "Oh, Japan. You silly little country."

But you know what? Maybe we're not so different. Perhaps for all we look at Japan in confusion, they're doing the same for us in the West. Maybe they're wondering what us Western gamers are up to, downloading their fansubbed episodes of Family Guy and Battlestar Galactica and eagerly awaiting their imported copy of Batman: Arkham Asylum. This might explain Famitsu's poll of 800 American otaku about their favorite Japanese entertainment - games, anime and manga, and their creators.

[blockquote]Favorite Game

1st Final Fantasy VII
2nd Kingdom Hearts
3rd Metal Gear Solid
4th Chrono Trigger
5th Final Fantasy
5th Final Fantasy IX
7th The Legend of Zelda
7th Shadow of the Colossus
7th Persona 4
10th The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time[/blockquote]

Nope, absolutely nothing surprising there. Wait, I take that back - it's surprising to see Final Fantasy 9 over Ocarina of Time, and I have a sneaking suspicion that whoever was in charge of the polling failed to ask those being polled whether they meant the series or just the game, since it's hard to imagine the first Final Fantasy being more beloved than its offspring.

[blockquote]Favorite Game Creator or Company
1st Square Enix
2nd Nintendo
3rd Capcom
4th Atlus
5th Hideo Kojima
6th KONAMI
7th Shigeru Miyamoto
8th Tetsuya Nomura
9th SEGA
10th Goichi Suda[/blockquote]

It's a bit surprising to see Atlus over Kojima, and there's plenty of doubling-up here (Nintendo/Miyamoto, Konami/Kojima, Squeenix/Nomura) but the interesting stand-out here is Goichi Suda - aka Suda51, the man behind Killer7 and No More Heroes.

And now, just for fun:

[blockquote]Favorite Anime
1st Cowboy Bebop
2nd Gurren Lagann
3rd Code Geass
4th FLCL
4th Evangelion
6th Full Metal Alchemist
7th BLEACH
7th NARUTO
9th Rurouni Kenshin
10th ONE PIECE[/blockquote]

Otaku really like giant robots and long, drawn-out shonen anime that should really have ended like 500 episodes ago. Who knew?

The full results (with some slightly embarrassing quotations) can be found at Umaguruma [http://www.umaguruma.com/?p=112].

my forever inner 9 and 18 year old says hi!
but yea, the kenshin filler was ok, i could watch it but liked if far less than the bleach filler.

I'm interested in how games popular in Japan like FFVII made #1, but in the anime sector, the biggest anime in Japan, Naruto, was only #7. This suggests that Western anime fans were less conforming to Japanese standards of good anime than Western gamers were to Japanese standards of gaming. Of course, this is still only sample research, and depending on how well Famitsu conducted it, it might only have limited accuracy as a piece of the Western otaku puzzle.

Code Geass, of course, has the most popular characters in Japan according to some polls, but as far as actual consumption in that country goes, it's still far behind Naruto. I'm actually quite happy to see CG made it so close to the top, though Cowboy Bepop probably deserves the #1 spot in the West since it's so Western in approach.

They're not hypothetical. There's a whole sub-culture of otaku in Japan, though they're older than their Western counterparts. Often written about in travel magazines doing features on Japan. The Sydney Morning Herald mentioned them mere weeks ago.

If you're after examples, Mr Funk, just look at Taro Aso, the now-ex-prime minister of Japan. Yes, he's a huge anime fan.

Wow... That anime list really shows that the biggest anime fans usually don't bother watching the ones that are actually good.
I know? Why is Gurren Lagann only number 2? It should've ascended to an entirely new list above the mighty apex of the heavens!

I hope so.

Actually,my best dream is if there were SOVIET animation nerds, who learn Russian to watch it. Soviet cartoons are good, but obscure.

I find it sad that a Persona game is so far (and it's 4th one) and FMA is prefered over Evangelion... Or that Bleach or Naruto are better than Fate/Stay Night, GTO, Death Note and other BETTER animes.

Also, please don't compare people that like Batman to people that like Family Guy. Seriously, I find that offensive.

Unless you mean stereotypes. But then again, stereotypical otaku doesn't even read mangas - WURDZ ARE LAEM. 10-minute fights are leet.

When I was in Japan I felt like a porn star walking through an army of dnd nerds. I think that on either side of the Water the people are very interested in the other side.

One family asked me if we really had hamburgers here the size of a child. It made me laugh and slowly I realized they earnestly thought so. Turns out that the "America does it big" thing really is believed by at least some folks there.

Plus I was pretty popular since people wanted to hear about America at a few places I went. Which was funny because the entire reason I was there was to see Japan.

well I like anime and Japanese games in general, but I'm confused by some of the choices here. For example yeah Cowboy Bebop is great and deserves the #1 spot (it's the only anime that EVERYONE whose seen at least like 5 episodes likes), I wasn't aware that Code Geass was so popular. Didn't seem all that great to me. And I was under the impression that the FF fanboys and girls loved 7 and 8 but treated 9 as a black sheep so to speak. Also I'd think that a true obsessed Japanophile like Otaku would like less syndicated anime so they could be like "you just like the stuff that's on American TV. I watch (insert obscure anime that's not on TV outside Japan)" and be all smug and superior about it.

The whole doubling up thing kinda messes up the list as well. People in gaming and companys should be 2 different category. And series should just be represented by the series (like only FF insted of having FFVII).
Because there arent hundreds of narutards at anime conventions. Think of it like this. Halo 3 and Gears are popular like Naruto and Bleach, but theres tons of stuff way better.

The Japanese One Piece was a masterpiece, actually.
Just saying.
Whattya mean "was," that series will be on the air for another 6 or 7 years. Which is why I will never watch it. Even if One Piece is the GREATEST THING EVAR there's no excuse for it to be so long (except, of course, people like it and it makes cizzash... or Yen, in this case). It's almost as many episodes as The Simpsons which has been on the air twice as long because it's been on the air every freakin' week for 10 years.

Death Note sucks, I'm super-glad it wasn't on the anime list. It shouldn't have been on the manga list either, but I'll just chock that up to general ignorance of good manga. Gurren Lagann is good but way overrated. Geass is awful and AMAZINGLY overrated. Narutard and Blech are both filler-ed crap.

And I'm rather sad that there are 5 Square games in that top 10. I mean... really, people? Do we play nothing else? (EDIT: 6 if you count them publishing Persona 4 which was developed by Atlus.)

Famitsu really should have found some way to poll more than 800 people.

Well, it's far superior to the Americanised version, was my point.
Besides that, I thought with most of these animes, anything after episode 300 was optional?

No eureka seven, clannad, KareKano, Gundam*, Haruhi, Excel Saga, Ouran HSHC, Lupin the 3rd*, or Samurai Champloo?
I call Shenanigans.
*stuff I haven't seen.

I was talking with this jap guy in my substandard japanese-engrish mix on ACE COMBAT 6 and he said 'JAPAN PURAIMU MINISUTAA ISU...... OTAKU.'
So CONFIRMED! Taro Aso IS a fanboy.

I will save my rant about how 'OTAKU' is not a flattering term in Japan and means those who would forsake their actual lives for some extreme hobby/entertainment.
Yes I used to call myself one (in my head) when I was a young dumb teenager, but now that I'm a young dumb College student I know better!

You've not seen a single Gundam series? Ever?

Wow...I didn't think it was possible to like anime and not have watched any Gundam ever. Even if you're not a fan, Gundam's such a large thing [http://royaltiger.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/lifesized_gundam.jpg] in Japan it's just...it's like not watching Star Wars and saying you're a Sci-Fi Fan. Even if you're not a personal fan of Star Wars, most every person has still watched at least one film.

no final fantasy VI(erm for some III) what? how could VII possibly... oh wait many dont like VI because its SNES and not 3d and since many played VII first they will hold it as the best... no suprise but still angers me how people find VII better than VI (seriously the characters in VI are just so damn likable like edgar or setzer compared to.... cloud!) anywho off that I was a little suprised to see square on top but happy nonetheless and very suprised for naruto or bleach not being number one

EDIT: also after looking at a few of those quotes like this one ?Naruto changed my life! I never used to stand out, or really have any friends, but now I?m different!? ~ Jennifer, 16 that really saddens me that you make friends soley(sp?) over an anime...
