Fan Crafts iPod Touch Pip-Boy 3000

Short of being a gadgeteering genius, this iPod Touch-based fan mod is the closest you'll ever get to owning a real-life version of Fallout 3's Pip-Boy 3000.

If you were one of those eager Fallout fans who purchased the $120 Portal gun [http://www.amazon.com/Fallout-3-Amazon-com-Exclusive-Survival-Pc/dp/B0017QFX30] when it comes to in-game doodads that should exist in real life.

Not that we could reasonably ask for a working Pip-Boy, but maybe at least one that does a little more than tell the time? Otaku Joe [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEkNyVWJirw], a Fallout 3 fan and, uh, otaku, decided to make the most of what he had on hand to make this dream a reality. He took the Pip-Boy clock from the Survival Edition, carved out the insides, and plunked his iPod Touch (which he seems to think is made by Sony...) right in the center display.

It's not really a complete replica - all he really does is have the iTouch display screenshots of the Pip-Boy interface which can be scrolled through so it looks like it's the real thing, there's no actual interactivity aside from that. You can't inject yourself with Rad Away with this. But it does look pretty close to the real thing, and on top of that, when you play the Fallout 3 soundtrack through the iTouch speakers while using it, it's just like listening to the radio in the game. Or you could put on "Super Freak [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/90675]." That works too.

Check it out here [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEkNyVWJirw].

My one question is if someone could create a G.O.A.T. Application that interfaced with this one to determine your stats? I don't care if the app cost $10, I would still buy these, just to get something cool out of my hunk of junk Pip-Boy. (The quality is bad, and it is badly painted to boot) It's too bad that they were not able to go with their original plan of interfacing the Pip-boy with the game itself via wireless, but it would have been nearly impossible to do right.

I pondered making a Vault 101 costume and a Pip-Boy shell, and I have a Tablet PC with a 7" screen that I could slot into a slightly-oversized shell to fake up an interface. Looks like someone beat me to that punch, though. Congrats to Otaku Joe!

(Not that I'd have made that costume anyway... I'm terrible with needle and thread, and not much better with computer hardware.)

That is SOOO cool. I genuinly couldn't tell that wasn't a F3 screenshot for about 10 seconds. Oh wait, that IS a screenshot. Huge let down.

how practical would a pipboy be in real life anyway? it'd have to have sensors all over your body to give you your medical status, everything else it does can already be done better with a modern smartphone.

still cool though.

That...is amazing. sadly I do not have that money to even think about buying that. Or even gutting it and making my ipod fit in there. It certainly would turn heads when your asked the time.

First!

As in, I made one of these first, the lazy man, Anyone can just slide an ipod touch into a pipboy shell. It's not hard.

Yeah, dude that's not impressive at all. I've been working on a REAL working one for well over a month before that guy came along. In fact, I even posted about it on this forum first (Yeah, you guys were first, that's how awesome you all are).

If anyone's intrested (just cause I don't want this to count as spam), message me for a link to a tutorial so that everyone can make they're own pipboy 3000!
