What is it with the Fantastic Four that makes them just sit around and do nothing with their powers in their movies? Is it really that hard to make them go rescue people from a fire or stop a bank robbery or something?
Well part of that is that the Fantastic Four have never been Superheroes in the traditional sense. They don't go out saving people from buildings or stopping crime. They're exporers. Reed makes an invention, they go to the negative zone, or to space or some other wierd place and strange "Fantastical " stuff happens. The movies try so hard to keep them grounded in reality when they are the absolute worst team to do that with.

Since I have no intention to go watch this trainwreck, can someone who did tell me what the explanation is for Susan Storm's brother being a "brother" in this version?

The in-universe reason, not the real one (which was of course just pandering).

Edit: n/m, Wikipedia updated. So she's adopted here.

There's a simple way to stop Hollywood and it's remake/reboot game. Don't pay to see these films. Don't buy the DVD/Bluray. If a restaurant/fast food place is running a tie-in promotion with the film, don't eat there. It comes down to one thing, the bottom line. If a film doesn't make it's money back (and superhero films are expensive things) then a studio is less likely to want to put money behind another. If they're not making films, the rights lapse and go back to the parent company.

Though before GOTG came out, everyone was saying the space-adventure was just going to flop face-first on itself. If they'd conceptualized the movie after GOTG, they'd probably hae gone higher on the space-side to copycat.

Though if space was too whacky, Doom is too complex to jam inside a movie half-wasted on retelling origin stories, I'm not sure what you have left for a villain. Namor maybe.

the mental kung fu i had to go through to understand your pure hatred for maintaining a "tense" was painful. It was (past) divine fate that stop me (present) and my mate from meeting up tomorrow (future) to watched it (past).

WHY DO YOU HATE TIME SO MUCH?

OT: i was actually cautiously optimistic about this movie when i saw the trailer during AntMan, but I see that hope was misplaced.

It's more of a "blame" than a hate.

I'm a BBC (British Born Chinese) and my parent spoke Chinese around me when I was little meaning my learning process of the language was messed up.

This lead me to having a great deal of difficulty on learning the English language (grammer, punctuation and speaking etc). Heck I had to retake English twice for my GCSE.

OT- Yup good called on my part given to the many many failures I have been reading about this film lately.

Can we all just agree that this was not Fantastic Four (or Fant4stic) as advertised but rather Chronicle 2 as Trank secretly intended all along?

You could use Annihilus. He's a giant bug warrior who commands an army of giant bug warriors and lives in an another dimension. He'd make for a great starter villain.

In fact, he would've been great for this movie. Have the teleporter experiment open a portal that lets Annihilus and some of his warriors through and have the Four spend the movie trying to close the portal before Annihilus can bring the rest of his army through. Then you could save Doom for the sequel or whatever.

I wouldn't even put it at that. Everything points to the studio doing a hatchet job to his script and the things he shot.

We're talking the difference between Superman2 theatrical release and the Richard Donner Superman2 here

Remember, Fantastic Four has the glory and honour of naming the trope [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ReedRichardsIsUseless] for describing characters with incredible powers and technology and not doing anything with them until something equally incredible or more so shows up.
That's something I've discussed with my friends as the Torchwood Effect. The idea is that in science fiction of all but the hardest kind I've noticed that almost any problem they come across can be solved by appropriate application of things they've already been shown to have in previous episodes. It's particularly pronounced with Torchwood because frequently they're up against low powered enemies with the full selection of Whoniverse level tech.

Honestly from what I've seen and heard of this movie's Doom I can't help but wonder if he was supposed to be Annihilus at some point. He's got the whole other dimension thing, the psychic powers thing (isn't that how Annihilus usually controls his armies?), the general look of him kind of veers as close to Annihilus as it does to Doom...

You might be thinking of someone else. Annihilus doesn't have any psychic powers.

I can't say I'm surprised. I am kinda curious how they did Mr. Fantastic's powers though, I don't know if there is a way to make it look good in live action.
I was thinking about it few days ago, and how his powers differ from Luffy's (from One Piece), and how Luffy's feel more real and like there is weight to it, even in a comic form. It feels like it obeys physics, he is made of rubber and if you stretch him he snaps back etc.

Mr. Fantastic, in everything I've seen him is more like, I dunno, an amoeba? He makes odd shapes which looks less real to me even in comic form.

Question.

Did they try to sneak this movie past people hoping they wouldn't notice, or did I just miss all the marketing and hype?

The latter especially from Disney's end, if you count the four leads talking about the movie in trivia form on a Disney-owned channel, and from Fox's end by mentioning that the movie's from the same studio that made that good [recent] X-Men movie... Then again, apparently some of the ads were misleading because they featured a "full" scene chopped up trailer-style that wasn't even in the final theatrical release...

This might well be bad and probably is. (I mean come on its a superhero team that has been third rate for quite a while)

However it does not matter how bad it is, Or if consequent sequels end up worse, the simple fact of it is it is still better than yet another property being absorbed and made awful by Das Haüs der Maüs.
