So after a quick forum search, I was surprised to see that there are no forums regarding favorite fantasy/science fiction authors, though the subject repeatedly comes up in other threads and a lot of escapists here like to read science fiction and fantasy.

As someone who has recently re-introduced myself to the genre with the works of Brandon Sanderson, I'm curious: Escapists, who are your favorite science fiction/fantasy authors, what are their books that you love, and why?

Terry Pratchett, hands down.

Edit: Oh and the books by David and Leigh Eddings such as Redemption of Althalus, those are amazing.

David Eddings
China Meiville
Karl Schroder
Stephen R. Donaldson
Terry Pratchett
Phillip Pullman
Phillip Reeve

I've read WAY more than these fine gentlemen but they are my favorites.

I love E.E. Knight and James Clemens. I actually have a thread up about them now lol.

Also Elizabeth Kostova. She only has one book but it was excellent.

Heinlein (obviously), Terry Pratchett, William Gibson, Neal Stephenson, Harlan Ellison, and I've always had a soft spot for Weis and Hickman.

How is James Clemmens, I've always meant to check him out, I'm a big fan of the books he writes under his "James Rollins" pen name and I've been meaning to check out the work of his fantasy writing persona

Patricia A. McKillip who has written pretty much all of my favorite fantasy books.
Louis McMaster Bujold who normally writes Sci-Fi but I read his fantasy novels stemming from the first in the series Curse of the Chalion which was very well told.
Ursula Leguin for the Earthsea series obviously.
McKillip is basically the book version of Miyazaki for me. Just in terms of Miyazaki's films comprise like all my favorites as do McKillip's books.

Glen Cook, specifically the Black Company series.
Micheal Moorcock's Stormbringer/Elric series.

Mine have been said except for Jonathan Stroud. The bartimeus trilogy was great.
I'm surprised no-one's said Robert Jordan yet.

There are a number of writers I could bring up, but I'll just stick with Patrick Rothfuss. He's only written a single novel so far (The Name of the Wind), but his writing style surpasses that of any other author I've read. This man's going to be a very, very reknowned author before it's all said and done.

Really into David Weber recently. And, of course, my all time favorite is Orson Scott Card. I mean, come on.

J.K. Rowling (Before Order of the Pheonix, mind you)
Rick Riordan (Percy Jackson and the Olympians)
Johnathan Stroud (the Bartimeus trilogy)
Me (you'll know it when you see it)

I couldn't remember his name but the book was great. Do you know when the sequels coming?
