Don't read this if you haven't played through Far Cry 3 yet, the game is really good (would be surprised if it doesn't wipe the floor with everything for GOTY) and you'll ruin the experience.
Anyway, like Far Cry 2 you get given 2 choices at the end. And like Far Cry 2 I think both choices are silly.
Actually I'll start earlier with Hoyt's death. I never for a moment thought that Hoyt didn't know who you were and was playing you along, but Jason Brody was a bit thick so you can forgive him for that. Before you enter the knife fight with Hoyt you are weapon less in a room surrounded by guards with guns on you. After you kill Hoyt all of the guards in the room are dead and you can walk out. Unless 7 people died from simultaneous heart attacks it made no sense whatsoever. It was really immersion breaking, and I found myself back in reality instead of the game world (far cry really is that good at telling its story you get sucked in).
That issue number 1 with the ending, Hoyt's death was basically a repeat of Vaas death and it wasn't nearly as epic or spectacular as I had expected. The knives through the head were awesome though and the knife fight was well done.
Then after a pretty epic escape sequence you finally save your little bro only for the natives to have kidnapped your friends.
You are so invested in saving your friends throughout the game that there was no way Jason would kill them to join the jungle nuts, I just can't see him making the decision to slash their necks realistically. Especially since you have just saved your bro. You're going to kill him now? Yeah right.
Jason may love blowing stuff up but not once is it given the impression that he's a pyscho or a murderer.
Note that I have no idea what happens in the 'kill your friends' ending.
I chose the save your friends option, because despite them being a bunch of American rich kids they were interesting characters and Jason wouldn't kill them.
Choosing this option basically severs your ties with the natives though and I felt that even though Jason hadn't wanted to leave the island earlier, it was because he had a job to do still. Now that the job was done and Citra was accidentally killed by dennis the spastic, I would imagine he'd hop right on the boat and leave with his friends.
I guess the game has to keep you on the island if you want to play more but still, I think it should have given you the option to leave.
Its a little better than Far Cry 2's kill yourself or kill yourself options, but I didn't like it. It was a let down when the story throughout the game had been so epic.
I was hoping the game would end with you getting back to US and being contacted by Willis, who offers you a job with the CIA. Leading into a potential Far Cry 4 with the same character, only older and more professional, perhaps teaming up with one of the mercs from Far Cry 2.
All in all, despite my gripes with ending it was one of the best games I've played in years and really worth the pick up. It fixes some of the horrible issues Far Cry 2 had and tells a story with epic set pieces that match CoD's.
