I think I speak for many of us when I say I was super-sad to hear Susan Arendt is leaving The Escapist.(I was out on my daily walk and plugged in to my ipod and cries of "Noooooooooooo!" escaped my face when I heard the news.) Her great sense of humor, knowledge of all things geeky, love of everything furry, tireless enthusiasm for her content creators easily made her one of the most likeable EiCs ever to grace the site. As a fellow female pre-2005 Whovian, I especially loved her take on the current series, even when her opinion did not gel with my own.
But overwhelmingly,my favorite experience of her thoughts had to be the Podcat. Don't get me wrong,I love Messr Tito and co, but the podcast won't be the same without her. There is a cadence and expressiveness in her voice that shone above the many laidback 'dude' voices that populate gaming podcasts and which was always a joy to hear. Her passion and articulateness came though every conversation.
So as she's leaving, let's give up some love for Ms Arendt and recap some of our favorite 'Susan' conversations on the podcat and/or her other articles/contributions to the site.
Some of my personal favorites:
Her backyard wildlife tales: Seriously, how can stories about squirrels on birdfeeders, crabby geese, loud frogs,tree-disappeating beavers and Alice's garden adventures be so funny and engaging? As an Australian who only has possums and the odd willy-wagtail or Australian noisy mynah in mine,I am very jealous.
Her many conversations about sexuality & gender in gaming, especially her PAX panel on what women want in gaming. As a woman who only started gaming later in life,it's nice to know some of the thoughts I have about trying to find female-friendly games are shared by others. Susan is blessed with a way of discussing these topics that never came off as preachy or alienating towards the guys. Also,I'd have never found some of the awesome titles that DO have cool female protagonists without her!
Space muffin!
What is pie? (As an Aussie,I can tell you it's a flaky pastry thing with meat in it that you put tomato sauce on,but I digress.) Also all food conversations that made me want to buy a plane ticket and try all those calorific American goodies specific to regional parts of the USA.
Her description of the Universal Studio horror exhibit. Seriously cue plane ticket number two.
The Puppy Bowl. I went and looked it up after he podcast.I died of teh cuteness.
These are just a few of my favorite of Susan's discussions on the podcasts and I could have included many more.
What are yours?
All the best,Susan, and good luck with whatever you choose to do next.
Thanks for all the great content and rock on with your bad self!
