Other the KOTOR games, my other favorites right now are Mask of the Betrayer, Baldur's Gate I/II, and Fallout: New Vegas.

Not sure about a favorite, but my top three are Final Fantasy VI, Tales of Symphonia and Persona 4. As you've probably guessed, I prefer JRPGs to WRPGs.

Breath of Fire 3
say what you want but it's just my favorite. They got the "Dragon form" just right, the story ... well it's not great but i mostly ignore the story anyways. There are a lot of characters I like, and the game has a certain sense of adventure to it that I find very entertaining. You just don't see Gameplay balanced in this way anymore. Granted the boss battles were a little too easy most of the time, but I think that's because you never knew when they were going to pop up. Trekking through dungeons and then at the end you find this boss, your low on MP from keeping your party alive, and have to fight intelligently.

The other major point for me is that BoF3's master system is just brilliant. Every character has a set stat gain for each level. Training under masters alters that slightly. If you want more MP on your big fighter so he can cast a few more spells before going oom, you put him under the right master and that's not a problem. Want your mages to toughen up some? put them under a warrior master. Or just focus, make your mage the most overpowered mage they can be! The point is it's freedom to make the group how you want it. It's a lot more creative freedom over your characters than a lot of other RPGS give.

The two biggest contenders against Breath of Fire 3, are Breath of fire 4 witch has all of this, and an improved combat system, a MUCH MUCH MUCH better story (Proof that Capcom CAN make a game with a real story) and basicly is hands down better. Why doesn't it get my top spot then? It loses serious points for minigame bullshit, and some really super heavy serious points for fucking with the dragon system. It pisses me off so much to look at it, that It just isn't there at the top.

The other major contender is Disgaea... 1 2 or 3 take your pick they are all really good. tactical gameplay level grinding to insanity, powering up weapons and armor by going into them and defeating monsters in them, these games are fun, but don't implement some things that would make this the best RPG for me, like the transformation into dragon forms, or any other kind of transformations. The games are still REALLY fun, but the stories are just... silly. They are really RPG Comedies, and that's fine, it's just I'd prefer it if they had a tiny bit more serious tone to them.

Honorable mentions goes out to Dragon quest 9, one of my favorite recent RPGs. I had so much fun with it, I was really skeptical about how it was going to turn out, but it took all the best things from previous Dragon quest games and mashed them all into one epically great ball of pure win.

Honorable mention 2 goes out to Final Fantasy 4. This is an rpg I grew up with, and I love a lot of it, but it's not really that good of an RPG. I love it, and it's a great story, the fact that characters end up getting knocked down and nearly killed a lot gave the story a lot more weight than most RPGs. But at the end of the day I can't call it a great RPG since there is very low customization, there is pretty much just a linear path of progression with very little deviation from it.

Honorable mention 3 goes out to Final Fantasy 10. Ignoring Tidus, and Seymour, I really enjoyed this game. It was fun fast paced and had one of my favorite characters of all time, Auron. I also really loved the Idea of just a giant monster roaming the earth causing destruction. I'm a big Godzilla fan, so I found it to be a lot of fun. This is only an honorable mention because the story is basically shit on a stick Tidus is the most anyoing little shit in a Final Fantasy game EVER, but what really kills me is the Cloister of Trials. I HATE THESE SO MUCH! They are so stupid and time consuming and pointless. I hate it so much! And there are so many of them! I can't play the game anymore because whenever i get to these stupid Trials I just get fed up with it, and stop playing. It's a shame because I really liked the summoning system they used too. it actually felt like it should for summoning monsters. A feel they kind of lost with twelve but... we won't talk about that.

Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion...
It's just everything I like about RPGs in one, endlessly re-playable package.

The one and only of all time?

Cant't be other than Ancient Domains Of Mystery - ADOM - the best rogue-like ascii RPG ever created by mankind.

From the AAA titles however it would be a tie between Planescape: Torment, Fallout 2 and Deus Ex.

Dragon Age 1 & 2
Mass Effect 1 & 2
Neverwinter Nights 2
Persona 3 FES
Final Fantasy VII & VIII
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines

I think my first 3 (well, 5 technically) entries on my list have marked me as a bit of a BioWare fangirl.

Played it for the first time last year, still blows most everything out of the water.
Huh, maybe they did...
I wish I could get it working on my pc, but I run windows 7 so...
I'm running it on W7. Mind you, I downloaded it off Steam and Steam is good with compatibility issues...
Do you recommend it to someone who usually doesn't play games this old?
Definitely. Some of the controls are a bit clunky, but you can change them, being a PC title and all... Otherwise it's fantastic. A lot of really good game design has gone into it which leaves a lot of modern AAAs paling in comparison.
Alright then I'll take your word for it. Hope it's worth the money.

Although my favourite RPG is Suikoden 2 I'm going to give one to each year of the previous decade. And I will only give one to games I've played.

2000- Suikoden 2

This game was a pivotal game for me both personally and philosophically. It was the first game that I really felt for, the first one to keep me awake at night, and will always remain very dear to me (and my wallet :)). This was the game that made me realise games ARE an art form.

HM- Majora's Mask- 3 days to save the world? With Everyone having their own problems on the side? Sign me up. Brilliant game, although not technically an RPG it still is my favourite of the LOZ series.

2001- Pokemon Gold

The final great Pokemon, back when 251 sounded so much better than 649. The only main Pokemon game that included 2 regions. I just feel cheated now with only 1.

2002- This year I haven't got round to playing yet

2003- KOTOR 1

This is when I discovered Bioware. A discovery I have NEVER regretted. Epic game, and I hope to see the same shine in The Old Republic later this year.

2004- Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines

Probably my least favourite on this list, it's still a brilliant game and definitely worth a couple of playthroughs.

2005- KOTOR 2

Although not made by Bioware, which effected the story somewhat, otherwise it took all that I loved about the first game and improved upon it. Great sequel, which probably could've of outshone the original if the story had been Bioware's.

HM- Psychonauts- Again not technically an RPG still a brilliant underrated game of the year. I'm hearing slight rumblings of a sequel, which I hope are true.

2006- Oblivion

I'm not sure any other game could've taken this spot. This game introduced me to the wonderful world of modding. Seriously with a solid enough mod base this game ages REALLY well. And of course The Shivering Isles Expansion, is probably my favourite expansion of all. With predecessor like this who can't get excited for Skyrim.

HM- Lost Magic- Again not an RPG. Still a good game. Using the Touch screen to the best i've seen so far, and the combo's of magic was just... FUN.

2007- Mass Effect

Bioware re-enters this list in triumph and creating what I consider the most consistently best series so far. And of course Commander Shepard.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HeY-2ovpF9c

Need I say more?

2008- Persona 3

This year was a good year for RPG's and it was tough to pick one, but it goes to Persona 3. For having just a great host of characters.

HM- Fallout 3

The strengths of Oblivion came back in Fallout 3, mods and expansions. This was the first time I felt a game might be TOO large. Of course if we are talking recent game size, Just Cause 2 is SCARY.

HM- Fable 2

Best of the series easily, and the final choice was something that I found personally difficult.

HM- Lost Odyssey

At a glance this is just a cliched JRPG. But what truly shines are the short stories or "memories" one can gather throughout the game. Plus Jansen was funny.

2009- ???

After the high of RPG's last year came the low of 2009. Batman: Arkham Asylum (I'm looking forward to the sequel as well) and Assassin's Creed 2 (Again looking forward to 3) being the best of the year.

And no COD doesn't deserve to be anywhere near this list.
Even as an HM, the ONLY good thing about it is that it has a HUGE player base, meaning online multiplayer is just short of an MMO.

Mass Effect 2 2010

THE ARPG, yes it may have lost a lot of its RPG elements from the first but it makes up for it in action, and there is still the Bioware shine of story, dialogue and characters.

My only real fear is Mass Effect 3, most specifically it can be summed up in two letters. EA.

Don't ruin the series, it will be one of the biggest shames of the genre and the companies if this game sucks

2011- We'll see.

With Skyrim on the horizon, and Mass Effect 3 pushed back to 2012, I think Skyrim will sweep 2011 RPG.

I'm kind of glad Mass Effect 3 got pushed back, I wouldn't like to see 2 of my good friends slug it out.

Of course if MMORPG's are included as well, The Old Republic might put up a good fight, if it's released this year.

Anyway that was the last ten years, here's to the next.

Just a heads up, it looks like a shooter, but it's really not (hence this being in a RPG thread). As for if it's worth the money: it's $10... I don't think thats really an issue seeing as most new releases are $60-80.

RPG game?

Tautologous tautology is tautologous.

Seriously, though, I don't know if you'd count them, but the Iron Realms text based MUDs. It's probably the closest feel to D&D I've ever had.

If you don't count those as 'games' for some arbitrary reason, then it's currently a tie between Fallout 3 and Jade Empire.
