I'd like to point out that you can turn off uploading, so it is possible to just download something to see if you like it without supporting the other pirates.
As far as I'm aware most good torrent clients no longer allow fully switching it off. I know transmission doesn't. Sure a 1kb/s upload is basically useless, but not nonexistant.

You just aren't using the right clients & addons, there are tons of ways to stop uploading, you just have to know where to get them and how to use them.

Oh, seriously? As a non-American, can I respectfully ask Homeland Security to fuck off ?

Why is America given dominion over international domains? Instead of useless cyber attacks on irrelevant things, if Anon truly promotes freedom of the internet they should do something about this. What they could do, I've no idea, but it irritates me no end when I see yet another American finger in another non-American pie.
As an American I can safely say I hate it just as much as you do. Blame the government, not the people living here. We hate them just as much as you do; trust me.
Yeah as an American I can also say I hate those fucks. They think just because we invented the internet we have a right to control it. Well that actually is an interesting point, but still I like free shit. Besides the owners of Avatar refuse to send it to me freely, as if they get to control it just because they spent almost 500Million making it.

On the other hand I really do like free stuff (not joking), and who wants to try to control the internet? The entire point of it is to be uncontrollable. Free speech at its best.

Case in point: Yeah, they're branded the same name, but I'm willing to argue that there are different types of pirates worth saying they're better or not than other pirates. Same way as we're all branded humans. Some or morally better, some are not. Unless we're willing to argue the comparison that stealing to feed your family is just as rotten as stealing to sell your stolen goods, just because you're still a thief, then I don't see a reason to object to what I'm saying.
Yeah, not sure piracy is quite equatable to stealing for starving children, but nevermind. However, the law should be equal to all. The poor and the rich should be seen the same in the eyes of the law, otherwise where is the equality.

Eh, I just haven't really looked into it, because I don't mind uploading. I know uTorrent you used to be able to stop upload, but I'm on Linux so I just use the default.

With uTorrent there is actually a way to finagle the numbers to allow for 0 upload, though it is somewhat complicated.

I guess it's the same system as it used to have, where you keep lowering the upload limit till it allows a 0.

The law should, and I believe it does, for the most part. UNLESS YOU'RE A FOOTBALL PLAYER LOLDONE

Oh yeah, since the conversation seems done-ish, I wanted to add this: I heart Clannad. <3

I would've taken the whole table, gone a few blocks and sold it for cash money.

That's capitalism.

Considering that HLS can just go back and say "oh yeah, 9 fucking 11" and a good portion of us americans are too fucking stupid to argue, I dont think they have to be concerned about good or bad PR.

Though I do like the guy they have as the vendor.

pirate is a pirate.
...

Seriously?

Just as a point of debate. Say I downloaded a game that was of high quality but didn't have a demo (I don't know what games DO have demos off the top of my head, so i'm not going to name one that doesn't, because i'd more than likely be wrong) for the purpose of seeing if it ran before I brought it.

Would that make me the same as all these other pirates?
Yes, seriously. A pirate is a defined by his actions. As such, no matter the motivation it is still pirating. Downloading a game to try it is not the same as downloading a demo.

Plus, when you are pirating games, you get them from torrents (unless your actually on the cracking scene, in which case you obviously aren't just there for demo) and if you are using torrents then you are most likely uploading. So even IF you only downloaded it to see if you like it, you are also uploading it so people who just don't want to pay benefit from you.
Downloading the game to try it if the game has no demo is not the same as downloading a demo? Well damn, I don't really get how that works, but that's not what i'm interested in.

You're assuming that everyone downloads from torrents (they don't) and that anyone who gets a direct copy from someone via torrent is also uploading (you can stop that) and that if you're not doing that, you have to be a cracker (no, you really don't).

I figured you'd say that anyway, just checking :p

They can't stop piracy, why bother trying? It's a bit hard to stop people visiting a site in a country that has no extradition treaty to the US without a filter and/or asking other countries to do it (which they won't as why should we take orders from these guys?).

It's not the same as having the full demo because you get the whole game.
Most will download from torrents, because most Direct Download sites don't give the capacity for full games. And no, you don't have to be a cracker to download games, I didn't say that. What I said was to get FTP access in the Scene your most likely a cracker, or atleast related to one of the cracking groups.

I know that I am probably going to be put on probation for this but I don't care. What I tend to pirate is anime that is not released here in the USA like Pantie and Stocking with Garterbelt. I learned recently that it is going to be released in the US and I fully intend to buy it. I also tend to download shows and movies that have not been released on DVD like Megas XLR which if I could I would buy on DVD the moment it came out.

Anti-piracy crap on pirate sites? A good idea.
Now can we get the "don't pirate this movie" ads off my legally purchased movies?

Of course its not, but how else would somebody see if a game works if there isn't a demo? Is it right to just expect them to buy and hope? You can't expect everyone to understand computer specs after all.

And, as a point, what you said implied that you were either a torrenter (I swear there is a word for that, but I can't think of it now, since I should be sleeping) or a cracker, which is why I made my arguement :p

Anyway, i'm sleeping now, cheers for the discussion! :)
