FF13 Bosses Respond to Western Review Scores

Final Fantasy XIII [http://www.amazon.com/Final-Fantasy-XIII-Playstation-3/dp/B000FQ2DTA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1278964269&sr=1-1] director Motomu Toriyama and producer Yoshinori Kitase have addressed concerns that the game is too linear by saying that critics are seeing the game "from a western point of view."

The Final Fantasy XIII duo of Motomu Toriyama and series veteran Yoshinori Kitase have been quite active as of late in order to promote the Western launch of the long-awaited RPG. The two have spoken out on topics ranging from a remake of Final Fantasy VII (again) [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/98084-FF13-Producer-Explains-Why-FF7-Remake-is-Unlikely].

Now, Kitase and Toriyama have taken on the few Western critics who have gotten their hands on Final Fantasy XIII: Speaking with CVG sister site [http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=235030] Xbox World 360, the duo discussed criticism of the game's linearity. "We try not to listen to the critics too much. Most of the criticisms have come because the first half of the game is very linear," said Kitase, "But we've got a story to tell, and it's important the player can engage with the characters and the world they inhabit before letting them loose..."

Toriyama chimed in, suggesting that the difference could be a cultural one between Japanese RPGs and Western critics. "We think many reviewers are looking at Final Fantasy XIII from a western point of view. When you look at most Western RPGs, they just dump you in a big open world, and let you do whatever you like... [It] becomes very difficult to tell a compelling story when you're given that much freedom."

I don't think anyone would disagree that there are certain cultural differences between Japanese RPGs and Western ones like Dragon Age [http://www.amazon.com/Fallout-3-Xbox-360/dp/B000UU3SVI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1279568021&sr=1-2]. I'm not sure I'm with Toriyama on the idea that you can't tell a compelling story in an open-ended world, though - it's just a different kind of storytelling.

With little over half a month to go before Final Fantasy XIII's March 9 release date, the few Western critics to judge the game seem to have mixed opinions [http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ps3/finalfantasy13?q=final%20fantasy%20xiii] on the matter. Game Informer gave the game a 93, calling it a "phenomenal RPG destined to be remembered as a technical milestone," the PS Official Magazine UK followed suit with a 90 - but other outlets like Play UK and Games Master UK were less kind, with scores of 79 and 81, respectively.

Is too much linearity a dealbreaker? Or is it just a design choice?

What's wrong with a linear story? Personally I prefer a damned good story in the games I play and I'm fine with it being 'linear' if that's what it takes to tell that damned good story.

Well seeing as every other main series FF game has been linear, I'm fine with linearity, infact I like linearity because it means I don't have to be concerned with making choices and can just go where the game takes me.

It must be news to Mr. Toriyama that different cultures have different tastes.
I don't mind linearity as long as it's good linearity, some of my favorite games are linear, and they're better off for it.

Hmmm, a WESTERN audience judges things from a WESTERN point of view?

Pfft, nah!

No, I think it's more along the lines that the last few FF games have had crappy stories. Seriously....12? They try to make it like Star Wars, a tried and true story-line, but then screw it up with the fact that the Empire really isn't bad and that Princess Leia is a *****.

No, it's not that we don't like linearity, it's that you guys can't do a good story anymore.

Linearity in an RPG, when done well, can be just as entertaining, if not more-so, than open-world storytelling. Personally, I've always been a fan of the Final Fantasy series because of their stories and characters(FF XII, is less included in this).

The Final Fantasy series has always added a little bit of extra to their games in the later parts, with the optional dungeons and caves and such. Do you remember the cave in FFX where you fought Ultima and Omega Weapon? I do, even though I never got through that cave. Do you remember Anima and the Magus sisters from the same game? All optional, and all fun.

I've always preferred games like Final Fantasy over games like TES4: Oblivion or Fallout.

Dragon Age: Origins is an exception because it was less open-world than Oblivion, but it was a compelling story, even though I made the choices.

All-in-all, I have high hopes for the latest addition to the Final Fantasy family. I am also looking forward to that FFVII remake, but that's another story.

Play Uk and Gamemaster happen to be quite "Bro Gamery" so im not going to trust their reviews much.
Even though im not a fan of FF, i know that they do liner good. Mind you, Enchanted Arms is a example on how not to do liner.

Linear is good if your playing it in a fast paced manner but to work though it though a cutscene heavy game is a slog. HL2 halo and cod are very (esspecially cod) linear but this in no way hinders the action. In a slower paced game it's not quite so good, especially when you are mentally 30 min ahead of the game.

That said the FF series always interested me but when I saw 13's graphics weren't very good it kind of lessened my desire to play it. (me being one of those amused by shiny things, physics engines, and AI)

There's a difference between Linearity and the video game version of Bayformers 2, which FFXIII is the latter.

I usually like the Final Fantasy games when they're actually fun. This is not one of those fun ones.

I think that the game will be good. JRPG's are generally focused on telling a story. They like character development as well as world development. Say what you will, but I find that Western RPG's have almost no real character development as part of the story. Sure you get to control more of the character growth and what they look like, but I feel that detracts more from the possible depth of the story. There are WRPG's that do have some compelling stories, but in my opinion they lack depth compared to JRPG's because they are so free. I'm not knocking either, but this is definitely a case of to each his own.

Well after 13 of them I'd have thought you'd have realised they would be linear.

I haven't played it so don't know exactly how linear it is, but I wouldn't expect anything different from a FF game.

I prefer the linearity as opposed to the western RPG freedom. I enjoy being told a story, not making up my own. Besides, they are somewhat more experienced at storytelling than I am.

Jesus Christ... Why are people so in love with open world shit. There's nothing wrong with a linear story.
Hell I LOOK for linear stories now because of all of this open world stuff is gettin old.

It's just a design choice to have it linear, and if reviewers have an issue with it not being open world they should really take a good long look at why they're even reviewing a Final Fantasy game.

Wonder if he has played games like Mass Effect, Dragon Age just to name a couple. I have nothing against linear, it will be a nice change of pace for me after playing both Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age: Awakening (soon very soon). It will have a lot to live up to for me because Mass Effect 2 is fantastic and Dragon Age should be very well done as well.

But I digress. This excuse is bogus and irrelevant, linearity isn't a bad thing if it is presented well. However, to say it is linear because open worlds can't have a good story is a pathetic excuse it just makes you seem lazy . I fully believe FF XIII will be a very very good game, but don't tell me you couldn't do something when there is clear proof you could. Just be honest. They are different types of games. JRPGs are linear, that doesn't make them bad it just makes them different. Accept critism, become better for it.

All reviews are are opinions and in the end all opinions are awful except your own.

Linear games can be good and so can open world games they're two different types of games. That said I love open world games but linear games can be a nice change of pace from time to time.

Kitase seems to have it pretty bang on.

It's perspective, different cultures ect. I still think it should be a good story and a great game, as, it's just following a formula which has worked for them in the past. We will just need to be open minded when we play
