So FF7R is currently on sale at Amazon and on PSN for $40. I played the original up until golden saucer, but was feeling burnt. I do however, watched bunch of let's plays and read the plot, so II'd say I'm aware of all the plot twists and key points. Remake has been on my watch list, but I didn't get it at launch because I was saving up for Doom Eternal. I love the series, and I want to get back to one of the two favorite games in the series.

On the other hand, there's Mortal Shell for $30 launch price. I'll probably get it on my pc, and don't really care about the Epic Store Exclusivity. It looks to be another souls-like genre, and I just watched the ACG review on Youtube and so far I'm intrigued. I am a huge fan of souls-like games, but felt only few games have been good so far (Salt and Sanctuary and Code Vein). I feel so many games in the genre doesn't reach quite the level of the original souls series. However, Mortal Shell looks different enough yet still seems to maintain the core concept.

I currently can only get one of the two. Please help me decide

Even though Im not a FF fan by any account, even if Ive played a bunch of them, I would get the FF7 thing. Mortal Shell from every trailer and gameplay video Ive seen looks insanely slow and annoying. The type of game where after an hour you're looking at the clock wondering if its okay to stop now, or if you have to go another 30mins just to say you gave it a shot.

If it launch for 30$ you can wait a bit and get it for 15-20 $, I'd wait. But then again I don't buy launch day stuff.

Up to you dude. If you were waiting for ff7r for a long while, get that. I am not a Dark Souls fan, but from what I've seen, mortal shell is already getting positive attention from the press and gamers. The fact that it's 30 at launch is a big bonus too.

Would my answer surprise anyone?

Only if i was gonna say Mortal Shell. But that game looks like ass, and this is coming from a Souls-like fan.

Get FF7!

Call me crazy but it sounds like you’re more interested in the latter already, but haven’t pulled the trigger because it’s Epic only yet. Maybe get FF7R in the meantime and you’ll probably be done with it by the time Mortal Shell is on Steam.

Perhaps. I feel Mortal Shell's main draw for me is because of its take on soulslike genre, and the $30 price point. Given my love for the genre and dislike to pay the usual $60 at launch, I feel this might be the game that I was looking for.

On the other hand, I've been dying for the ff7 remake ever since the announcement. Seriously, it was the one of the three games in the series that I genuinely loved (IV, VI, and VII), and after watching advent children (yeah I kinda liked it) and playing crisis core, I've been wanting ff7 in modern, upgraded visuals. Because I didn't want to pay the full $60, I've been waiting for it to go on a sale, and I finally see it go on sale.

Maybe you are right; Maybe I should get ff7r now and wait for Mortal Shell to come to steam, though I really don't mind getting it on EPG either 🤷‍♀️

Mortal Shell looks a bit like a Chinese knock-off to Dark Souls. And not even the third and best one but the first one from 10 years ago. The combat looks sooo slow. Nioh 2 and Sekiro perfected melee combat and build on the foundation of Souls and drastically improved on it but *grunts* M O R T A L S H E L L looks as rudimentary close to the original as possible. I do admire that a team of only 15 people managed to make a game like this though.

FF7 Remake is seriously fantastic. I played almost the entire Squaresoft PS1 line-up and this game rekindled some of the magic I thought was lost for good. So I guess it depends on what you prefer. An AA Dark Souls 1 clone or a reimagining of one the most iconic JRPGs of all time.
