I let out an uncontrollable cry of despair upon reading that title. Oh dear. The scary movies and their inbred offspring have really grated against me. Especially the first one for starting the ball rolling. It's even worse as most my friends love them and always seem to want me to watch with them. It feels like a bunch of college kids who think they're really funny suddenly got a lot of expensive movie making equipment and just made the first braindead "lolz" that came to mind. Something that any normal artist would look back on, cringe at their immature younger self and burn all evidence from the public eye.
Though i vaguely remember enjoying Soul Plane. "Vaguely" because i likely wasn't sober at the time. They always have the insecure white guy losing his girlfriend to the cool black guy trope too, but i guess it barely makes up for the previous years of stereotyping the other way.

I remember enjoying the Naked Gun movies so much I actually watched the full directors commentary of one of them, and it was fascinating to see just how much thought, planning, and discussion went into every scene, every line, every background joke.

I would bet that a single scene of the Naked Gun movies had more care and attention than these entire modern spoof movies.

Most notable in the commentary was when a particular joke came up delivered by OJ Simpson, and the directors voiced their disappointment in how the joke had aged in the 15-20 years between the movies original screening and the time they were doing their commentary.

Why were they disappointed? Because the joke was a cultural reference to a particular action of a particular celebrity in the 80's - One who's actions had now been forgotten. They said that at the time it got fairly good laughs in the cinemas, but now it was a non-joke. No one watching the film 20 years on knew what OJ was referencing.
It's sort of sad that these spoof movies have devolved so that virtually all their comedy (that isn't cheap slapstick) is cultural references. No one will have any idea what 90% of the 'jokes' referenced by these spoofs are supposed to be in 10 or 20 years.

I can still watch the Naked Gun and laugh my ass off at the great lines. I don't think many people laughed the first time they watch these new spoofs, and they certainly won't be laughing in the future.

What even is the point in doing spoof movies these days when the only entries to the genre are painfully unfunny vanity projects full of cultural references that immediately date the damn things? Spoof movies can be so good if they're done right, some bits will get dated but the greats of the genre are bonafide classics in their own right with plenty of bits that stand the test of time.

Spoofs are easy to do badly but hard to get right, any idiot with a lack of comedic writing talent can point and laugh at whatever's recently been on the screen. There's obviously a lot of comedy to be had by poking fun at recent films, the success of various YouTube series can testify to that. I despair that there are some really talentless people (or people whose talent dried up long ago) who get to waste millions on churning out the same unfunny rubbish that'll be out of date in a couple of months. The budgets for these things aren't massive, so even a meagre box office draw is unlikely to be a loss for the studio/publisher.

Cheap, nasty, unfunny films are here to stay because people will go to see it and some will even like it. We've all got that one friend who loves this stuff, buys a cinema ticket, buys the DVD, keeps them financially viable.

Well, this is disappointing... because I probably would have gotten that Whiplash reference in this movie because I saw Whiplash and thought it was amazing as fuck...

Other than that, I think the best modern "spoof" film so far, outside of The Room, was Birdman... I think it's because of the dialogue...

Initially when I did watched the trailer, I would go see it just to that 50 Shade of Grey doesn't get my money but the better answers is to not give them any money in the first place (using my money just to spite is meaningless).

So, have there been any spoof movies in the past decade that have reached the dizzying heights of almost mediocre? It seems like the genre is laying face down in the septic tank at the moment.

So it's a spoof of an adaptation of a fanfiction of a steaming pile of crap. The only surprising thing here is that it managed to score as high as half a star.

I had to figure out if Scary Movie was the last good spoof movie to hit the big screen.

My first thought was the Austin Powers' series. Brilliant spoofs of the spy genre, and the sequels were pretty great.
Unfortunately those movies are too old, unless you start from the date GoldMember was released.

Then I remembered Shaun of the Dead. I'm not sure if I'd call his other movies "spoofs", but I think we can rest easy knowing Simon Pegg can do this genre if the need arises.

that entire trilogy (shaun, hot fuzz, at world's end) are all amazing spoof movies of different genres. So yeah, it can still be done, you just need great director, writers, and actors.

Why is #OscarsSoWhite? The 2 movies released this year with African-American lead actors are Ride Along 2 and 50 Shades of Black. Sorry, I couldn't resist.

On topic: I used to love parody movies. I think you're right by saying Scary Movie was the last one that was funny. The other movies that were mentioned (Austin Powers, and Cornetto trilogy) are more comedies done in the style of classic movies. I don't know who enjoy these pale imitations of parody movies. I am guessing the same kind of people who love to check their brains at the door when they are watching a Transformer movie.

What really gets my goat is that anyone who wants to make a good 50 shades spoof, will now be seen as copying these assholes!
