As a Filipino, this story strikes me as several different layers of sad.

I mean, if you're going to kill someone... and honestly, you fucking shouldn't, under ANY circumstances...

But if you have to... at least make sure the value is at least above $100 that you lost. You've murdered your own dignity as well as some of the little faith I have left in humanity.

What is wrong with people?
Their humans. Humans are inheritantly idiot selfish morons.

I think its worth noting that in Filipino, 7 dollars have the purchase power parity to around 100 dollars back in the west (give or take), but that is still marginal money. people dont get killed after thousands in betting debts, and this was 7.

and 7$ is in some countries a shitton of money.

$7 is in no way, shape or form a "shitton" down here. But you know what? Even if there are people live in squalor here each day with even less, that's definitely not a lot.

Is this an indication of how people are in the Philippines? No.

Our Tourism slogan right now is "It's more fun in the Philippines." Apparently not Counter-Strike.

ALSO: Counter-Strike. Of all things. These guys were probably living in 2002, cuz right now DotA's all the rage.

---EDITED TO REFLECT A BETTER GAUGE OF LIFE HERE. PREVIOUS STATEMENT HAD TERRIBLE WORDING---

Most people live in squalor here each day with even less.
and thats the point. if you live with less than 2-4$ a day you would interpret 7$ as a lot of money. too much to lose at once. okay its not a shitton but it is still a big loss.

seems to be ridiculous? well lets take a trip to india
indian authorities say those who earn at least 50 cents a day make enough to live on, and are not poor.
The Planning Commission told the Supreme Court Tuesday that anyone with a daily income of over 50 cents in villages or 65 cents in cities should not be eligible for government assistance.
The commission says the amount is enough to pay for food, education and health.
The newly proposed poverty line is higher than the current level, which is set at 31 cents for rural areas and 54 cents for urban ones.
Critics have denounced the increase, saying it is an attempt to minimize poverty levels in the country.
The Supreme Court ordered the commission to adjust the poverty figure to reflect India's rising inflation which is estimated at 9.78 percent.

http://www.policymic.com/articles/how-poor-is-too-poor-in-india

and you know: poverty generates desperation and desperation creates monsters.

does this unfortunate event make every philipino a batshit, bloodlusty murderer. no, it doesn't.
i have read and seen even worse reasons why somebody commited homicide.

dumb and short-sighted people do not have nationalites or race, ergo they exist everywhere.
Oh sorry, let me edit my previous statement. Terrible choice of English there. What I meant was definitely NOT "Most". There are people like that (slums and squatter's areas and all that). And if you have the money to waste on an internet cafe Counter-Strike match, $7 is NOT a lot.

Fine. You know more about Philippine Economics than a Filipino Citizen.

Take note though:
which would take you in America '100$' to get the same amount of food.
Look at these prices: http://www.magkano.com/market/meat_poultry_price.htm (browse it)
Now tell me if PhP 300 can buy a lot. Is a single kilo of Beef Rump $100 there? If it is then I rest my case.

EDIT:
Now, if you were to take into account "alternative sources" for your meat (that is, double-dead meat) you could stretch that 300 at the cost of you/your family's life.
