The last FF game I played was XII. I sort of liked it, but got a little tired of the grinding.

I liked X's music and atmostphere, but hated it's characters, voice acting and story.

I loved VIII for a good 2/3rds of the game, and even with it's ridiculous and ungodly STUPID ending, I still loved it.

VII. 'Nuff said. This may sound cliché, but this is almost the perfect game held back by some of the design choices back in that generation, like the combat. I've been waiting for a worthy game like it ever since.

I played a bit of VI but I didn't play it enough to remember if I liked it or not.

These are all the FF-games I've played.

I don't know anything about the side games, like X-2 and Crystal Bearers or some sort, there are so many games which don't have a number, and I don't feel like skimming GameSpot's search bar.

I'm on the fence for XIII and XIII-2 and I would be willing to buy a new console for them, but I would like to hear your voices on what I might have missed. New games or older ones.

I still rank 4 and 6 as the two best games in the series, though I will always have a soft spot for 1 as well (just don't expect any character development in it as, while the story itself isn't all that bad for the little there is, the main characters are just blank templates).

If you like the series, you'll undoubtedly get a kick out of those two. In 4, you'll very clearly see the roots of the overly melodramatic flair the series later came to embody.

I have to agree with this .

I have played them all ( going through FFXIII-2 as i type) and if you likr jtpgs they are definatlry worth it , up until 13. FF1-FF12 ( save for FF11) are pretty good , as long as your not a graphics whore . Also don't forget final fantasy tactics , one of my favorite Srpgs games alyhough i lime yhe original better than the remake . I personally don't like the christal chronical series , bit there are a lot who do so judge for yourself. The tactics games on gba are prettu good but too easy for my liking .

FF11 and 14 avoid like the plague , they are MMos and pretty bad in my opinion.

All in all i say check most of them out if you like jrpgs

Oh and . FFX-2 and FFXIII-2 are terrible , and this is coming from a guy that likes final fantasy games.

My favorites are 1, 4, 9, 10, and tactics. I enjoyed 3, 5, 7, 8, and 13, but they weren't favorites. I hated 2, 10-2, and 12.

I haven't played 6 or 13-2 yet, but will play them soon. I also enjoyed crystal chronicles on the GameCube, but I was 11 or 12 at the time, so it doesn't count.

Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy X-2 are the two BEST FF GAMES EVER.

Seriously, get FFX-2.

Don't consider it a "sequel" to FFX, because everyone who dislikes it only seems to feel that way from comparing it to FFX, so don't fall into that trap. Love FFX-2 for its own merits, and as its own game.

I actually have to say that the battle and leveling system of x-2 is one of my favorites; I just really hated the writing. I've tried playing it twice, but I just couldn't take it anymore in both playthroughs the second rikku said "your friendly neighborhood Gullwings" at the beginning of chapter 3. I really couldn't take it anymore at that point.

IX

Get IX.

Go out this minute and buy IX.

Seriously, Square re-released it on PSN a year or two ago. You can download IX and pay not very much monies for it at all.

...why are you reading this when you could be buying IX?

...have you bought IX yet? I really think you should. It's rather a good game.

Seriously though, stop reading this and go play Final Fantasy IX.

...played it yet? Good. Isn't it a wonderful game? Aren't you so glad that I suggested you go and buy Final Fantasy IX this instant?
This guy has the right idea. Seriously, FFIX is FANTASTIC. I also heartily recommend Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy X, and also to at least give Final Fantasy XIII a try, even if you end up not liking it.

If you are not really a fan by now, having played all those, then FF is not really for you.
All of the games has flaws and good parts, some have more flaws, some have more good parts. So yeah don't like the games you listed, don't buy any other FF games, they are all the same in the end. (figuratively speaking)

I bought FFIX when it first came out.

Then I bought the "official strategy guide" for FFIX.

Then I threw FFIX away in disgust at the "official strategy guide".

Not only is FFIX a total Guide Dang It [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GuideDangIt] but the guide didn't have ANY helpful information, instead being plastered with "see our website for these secrets" every single bastard page.

I'm never ever going to play FFIX again because of that ****.

VI and IX. For the love of Squeenix, you can not call yourself a Final Fantasy fan if you haven't played these two.

Liked VII? Good, because VI did everything that VII did, except better. And Kefka is one of the most memorable villains in the history of everything.

IX... Well, its brilliance comes from the dissonance between the cartoony visual style and the incredibly depressing story which delves into themes up to and including genocide. It may as well be called "Things Get Worse: The Game."

Play both of them. NOW.

I have to recommend IX; it's the right level of silly to be endearing, with great gameplay and mechanics.

Though, for my money, there is no better Final Fantasy than Final Fantasy Tactics. Amazing story, amazing music, great mechanics, great visual style, and the spiky haired emo boy with the big sword is only part of a side quest. Seriously, there was a time where I owned 5 copies of this game.

FFIV. FFIV so much. I am a diehard VII fan, but IV is by far my favorite of their games.

Go play VI. There's a reason so many people rank it as the top Final Fantasy game. I've found that most people who rank VII as the top Final Fantasy game are the ones who either A) haven't played anything before VII or B) just missed out on VI. Seriously, go play it now and enjoy it.

You'll also probably enjoy IV, although I've seen that one be more hit and miss with people. I also have the less popular opinion of XIII actually being good(I know, how dare I!) so I'd say go pick that up as well.

But in all honesty they all have their good points and their flaws, and it really comes down to your own personal preference. It is very rare indeed for two Final Fantasy fans to rank the games in the same order. A perfect example is me and one of my friends. The only real thing we have in common with our ranking of the games is that VI and XIII are both in our top 5 and VII is in our bottom 2, everything else is completely different despite us both loving the franchise. Do some research on each of the games to see if you'd like it, that's really the only way to be sure. That or play every single Final Fantasy game(a feat I'm working on doing yet again) and get a personal feel for each one.

FF3, the Tactics series, and I'm personally a fan of ten, but only because it has a hybrid turn based battle system. I'm not a big fan of active battles.

Go back and get through Final Fantasy VI if you still can. My personal favorite though is Final Fantasy IV. I love the characters, the over-arching plot isn't revealed at the end and, the battle system doesn't have the same ridiculous cool-down/ warm up times seen in FFVII. Not perfect but no Final Fantasy is.

Also IX. Nice is excellent and often overlooked since it came out towards the tail-end of the PSX's popularity...and/or life...

I'm with this guy (or girl) go get IX, it's my favourite one (yeah i like it better than VII, better story better characters, it's just all round better IMHO)
