Here's an idea - make Magic United States of America a place where any wizard can get a wand really easily and really cheap ("Just fill in this form"), then have a big debate about whether high-school Avada Kedavra castings are in some way related to that.

Honestly, I feel like I sort of grew passed Harry Potter quite a few years ago. Terry Pratchett came along and swept me off my feet, and Harry Potter went out of the window right before the last book happened.

But this, this I sort of like. I reckon it's the 1920's aesthetic. I've got a weakness for that. Here's to hoping it won't be some cheap rip-off or something.

Funny that, I somehow had the same feeling even when I saw the thumbnail. It's the postures, steam, outfits and colour schemes I reckon.

I knew in my heart-of-hearts that this wouldn't have been a March of the Penguin style Documentary featuring Newt Scamander giving more of a narration than an on-screen performance. I remember reading Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them but did I just straight up forget the plot of that? I could have sworn FBaWtFT was literally just a reference guide to magical animals with scribbles in the margins. I didn't realize I was missing out on...whatever the Hell is going on in those pics.

The basic look of the majority of the Dr's costumes has been that of an Edwardian gentleman. Largely because it looks different but without being too anachronistic in most situations on 20 century Earth. In this case Eddie Redmayne is wearing an Edwardian style frock coat and waistcoat in the same manner as most of the Drs. However this is slightly odd seeing everyone else is in 1920s style dress and the lead is in a style which is 30 years older.

Yeah, I know, that's been the Doctor's spiel for a while. But now I'm sort of sad that wasn't the case with the original Harry Potter. I can just picture Harry dressed like Austin Powers and....yes. All of the yes.

I was hoping for something like a David Attenborough style mockumentary series, with narration and plenty of footage of Newt interacting with (and frequently coming very close to being horribly murdered by) the various creatures he's documenting. And if you wanted to capture the feeling of the scribbles in the margins, have occasional breaks from the footage to have a bunch of wizard kids watching it in class and doing Mystery Science Theatre 3000 style riffing over it.

But is suppose it wouldn't make a lot of sense for a filmed documentary... Particularly if we're talking about the first writing of the book... So we set it in the present, with either Mr. Scamander's descendants or another witch/wizard following in his footsteps, who wishes to update the book for a modern audience by having a slickly produced video series that covers the content of the book.

why is it ? Why were you thinking it was going to be ? If anything id thought it would focus on both mummy and daddy as ultimatly its their kid that takes down the big bad guy.

Why is it set in America? Half the appeal of Harry Potter to me was its Britishness.

They've set it in a completely different place, with completely different people, at a completely different time. Seems to me that this is just a different story, tacked onto the Harry Potter brand.

I just hope I'm wrong and this does manage to capture the feel of the Harry Potter universe.

Now I'm not what you'd call a dedicated fan of Harry Potter, but I do like anachronistic/alternate-history premises, and colour me interested at the notion of magical 1930s America.

OT: It's so British that I forgot that it's taking place in 20th century 'Merica...

Other than that, with all the comments referencing British shows, I'd say it reminds me of an American Downton Abby...
