Awesome trailer, looks to have an awesome villain(Ben Kingsley as Mandarin? Uh....hell yes?), and some genuine character development out of Tony Stark.

I'm a little concerned that they are going to go a complete 180 on the tone to super-serious and gritty(ala Batman), which could be awkward considering the Tony Stark they've built over 2 Iron Man movies and the Avengers, but hopefully they'll find a nice balance.

The Hobbit Trailer came out last December, a whole year before it was to be released.

Anyway, this has got me excited! I'm glad that they're putting in some serious character development. I'm also excited to see Mandarin.

When I saw Shane Black was going to direct, my first thought was "he's going to write Pepper being kidnapped". Looks like I was right, but this looks AWESOME. Shane and RDJ have history, I'm sure this'll go well. Bring it on Marvel!

Well it certainly look like Tony is out of his comfort zone and being push into a corner! I guess we will see more of the serious side to Tony.

I am definitely watching it nex May!

It's looking a little too serious to be an Iron Man movie but whateves it still looks awesome. But there wasn't even one joke which concerns me.

Hm, it looks...gritty. I don't know how I feel about that. The thing I liked about Iron Man was how even though Tony got in some deep shit and a good part of the stories for the other movies was giving him an attitude adjustment, he was still cavalier about it. It's not that he didn't take the major threats in front of him seriously--it's that he didn't get all melodramatic about them. It's hard to tell where Tony's character is at this point and what's causing him to act this way, but hopefully it doesn't cause him to get too melodramatic. To me, he's the type of character that is crazy about Pepper and would turn the world upside down for her in a heartbeat, but wouldn't make it an overly-sentimental or wordy affair. His actions carry the drama, not his words. I'm just hoping they don't get those two mixed up this time.

I hope they don't lose the humor and lightness from the other two with all this "darker and grittier" going on, especially since the director's changed.

And I am still not sure how I feel about Kingsley playing the Mandarin. On the one hand I know Kingsley is Indian and is therefore considered "Asian" but the name Mandarin would imply someone Chinese. Even the fact that the Mandarin was originally based on the Fu Manchu character type would mean that he is Chinese (albeit half Chinese, half Caucasian from what I understand).

On the other hand the Mandarin is a character that does have sorta racist roots, and even if they had a Chinese actor play him that'd be a whole other can of worms.

Also gotta wonder if the whole Iron Patriot look that Rhodes is now sporting is influenced partly by the public knowledge that Captain America is back in the action.

Between this and the Avengers deleted scenes with Cap... this batch is looking to be a lot darker than the first set. Colour me interested.
What deleted scene are you referring to? I haven't seen Avengers since it was in theaters...

I have been glad that the Avengers movies have been taking a light tone in a genre that at its time had been dominated by grittiness, but that doesn't mean grittiness doesn't have a place. Yes, I don't think things should get too mopey or melodramatic, but I've always been one to think that dark moments in a light series tend to be the most effective kinds of dark moments. When it's nothing but misery misery misery all the time, slightly more misery isn't as impactful. There must be hope in order for there to be true despair. There's plenty of room for error, but as long as they don't lose sight of what made Phase 1 exciting and enjoyable, I'm willing to give slightly darker stories a shot.

I'm looking forward to the Mandarin, not just because of Kingsley, but because villains have been the weakest points of the last two movies. Most of Stark's conflict in the first two movies have been internal while external forces made things worse. So far Tony Stark has managed to face three major threats (Stane, Vanko and the Chitauri) while smirking and making jokes the whole time. It'll be nice to see Marvel throw Iron Man a villain who can actually match up against him.

Now all I need to see is one of those 10 rings in action...

Wow. I'm interested to see just how they will play out the Mandarin's character since he is supposed to be magical, and the Iron Man movies have been the most realistic and grounded superhero movies so far.

Also this looks SO AWESOME! I can't wait.

There's some deleted scenes where Cap looks over the people from movie one, all marked 'Deceased':

...which are apparently going to turn up in Cap 2.
Those scenes address a lot of the issues I had with Cap's arc in the Avengers. I wish they'd have left them in the final cut :(

I'm pretty sure that bit at 37 seconds is one of the nightmares he was talking about. Anyway, my thoughts:

I don't like his new armor. WAY too much yellow. Honestly though, that's my only complaint. I'll wait for the reviews before seeing this one (not a lot of goodwill left after Iron Man 2) but...Well, it looks a lot better then the last one.

I agree. Iron Man has been at the core of some of the darkest moments in Marvel history and has great stories of bouncing back from rock bottom. Some amount of grit and melodrama could make this movie the best in the trilogy if they can adequately balance what made the first two great.

Technically the Mandarin's rings are alien-tech. Shouldn't be too hard to explain considering Thor is in the same universe and Asgardian magic is just described as alien-tech.

I think it's looking really good! War Machine's not-iron-patriot armour is far less ugly than it looked before, the extremis suit looks badass, and Tony Stark looks like he's going through genuine character development. Maybe they'll introduce the whole alcoholic crisis thing Stark had in the comics. Also, I'm excited to see The Mandarin, because they're clearly paying a lot of attention to the character with the "no such thing as heroes" and the thinking he's the demonised "good guy", and whoever is playing him seems pretty perfect so far.

What're your thoughts on the trailer?

P.S. Has a trailer for a movie ever come out this early before the release?

EDIT: Also, did you notice that thing at 37 seconds? Maybe they're doing that really fucking weird storyline when the Iron Man became sentient and took Tony hostage because it loved him. They should do that. Complete with a robot-on-dude steamy rape scene? I think so.
no whats most likly happening is that the Mandarin is controling the armor with one of his rings and using it to try and end Tony.
OT: so excited:) and here hopeing we see rescue:)

sad-face for the lack of AC/DC in this trailer like the other 2 movies =( obviously wouldn't be appropriate given the tone of course.

I really like this PTSD thing with Tony's character post Avengers here. It makes the most sense out of all of them. Cap was a super solider war-vet already, Thor is a literal god that probably fought bigger monsters before this, Hulk is the Hulk, etc. Plus Ironman was the one who came closest to dieing in that movie so it makes sense his the one most affected by it.

Part of me thinks that bit with the suit grabbing Pepper was a "bad-dream" since its a bit more surreal than the attack on his house..but i guess we will find out.

I am thinking that Tony started designing this new Mrk8(?) suit to be remote controlled (hence that quick scene with the gauntlet part flying to him) to he doesn't HAVE to actually be inside it, so he isn't in danger....and then someone hacks it (probably Mandaran).

Not the least bit worried about everything getting "darker" by the way. Its still Ironman there will be light-hearted moments too...and remember in the broader Marvel Phase 2 sense...there's going to be a movie with a tree-dude and a TALKING FUCKING RACCOON so yeah don't worry.

I'm freaking psyched, man. I still think that they'll have humor; remember how much humor there was in the Avengers, and the Avengers had a trailer completely focused on action.

One problem though. While I am INCREDIBLY happy to see Ben Kingsley as Mandarin (especially with that epic beard), how are they going to be able to introduce the magic rings? Didn't he get them from an alien dragon in the comics?

He is most likely infected with Extremis in the scene you mentioned if I had to guess. It allowed him to remotely control tech in the comics. Not sure how OP it will be in the movie.

I think you may be getting his and Iron Fist's origins confused. Mandarin found the rings in a crashed space ship with a dead alien in it. I think it was later retconned that he murdered the alien in the ship and took the rings.

We are both right. He found the rings in a crashed spaceship with an alien in. Said alien was also a dragon; same species as Fin Fang Foom.

Still, my question was less the origin and more if general audiences will buy into the villain of the Iron Man franchise, which up to this point hasn't had much to do with anything too outlandish (the Avengers not withstanding), getting his power rings from a space dragon.

Oh, and personally, I'd love to see space dragons in the MCU, it's just that I don't know if the general public can suspend their disbelief that much.
